I planted 13 fruit trees in my backyard, 3 pear, 3 peach, 1 aprocot, 1 plum, 2 apple, and 3 pecan. Thats all I have, and I think that someday it will feed a lot of people.
Good video. Don't forget the small fruit. Blueberry bushes are gorgeous. So are hucklberry bushes. You can plant thorny goosberries under windows. That gives you fruit before the tree fruit is ripe.
I agree. fruit tree, plus your garden. I would add rabbits for meat... rabbits are easy to rise, don't take up much space, don't make noise, and if you keep up with their droppings they don't smell. (compost and lime is the key to that)
i had a few nieghbors call code enforcement against us we could not have any fruit trees and/or chickens without The nieghbor permission But then kids trying to take the eggsand the chikens and eating unripe / green fruit making them sick so they sue The children told the police yes they took the fruit but we most have put a spray on the trees so that to make them sick ... we moved to a location that do not allow any gardening and/or chikens
A law was passed in 2006 for all livestock to the registered with the government. This law was to be initiated in 2008 and fully enforced by 2010.
Old Order Amish, at this time, have someone representing them in court battling this law. They will lose their livestock, as they will not register their farm or computer chip their animals.
If they do not comply their animals will be confiscated, they are very concerned.
Two years ago the government offered free chips for the animals, after 2008
Some Livestock auction barns in 2006 were beginning to enforce this law by encouraging the livestock owners to get the animals chipped, informing them that at that time the chips were free, but told them in 2008 they would need to buy them and by 2010 no animal could go through the auction barn or be slaughtered with out the chip.
Here are the rules of this chip:
All livestock, that includes every chicken, every, duck, every pig and piglet, etc. must be chipped
All livestock must be chipped (not just commercially raised)
If the animal dies (regardless of reasons) the proper authority must be notified of the death.
If the animal leaves the property (regardless of reason) you must contact the proper authority to inform them of were the animal is going and when, if at all, it will return to your property
Failure to comply justifies immediate confiscation of the animals
cow, goat, sheep, pig, turkey, goose, duck, and chicken.
If you want to take your horse out for a ride you will have to call the appropriate authorities and notify them where you are going and notify them upon your return
If you butcher a chick or duck or turkey, or if it gets run over on the road, or if killed by a coyote or owl. You must call the appropriate authority to inform them of the death,
This is already law, and it's being enforced. Not even the Amish can get free of this one
So, Here we are, 2009, Why has no-one been informed of this new law, and why are you saying that the "Bush administration" Has made this law, Its 2009 Buddy, Barack Obama is in. You sir, make absolutely no sense. Shut your mouth.
The Amish right now are in the process of losing their farms over these laws.
Why don't you do some research, as there are many other than myself who know about these laws.
This Law was first established in the office of Kennedy. It was then called the Act of 1960.
It was updated by the Bush HLS admin and FEMA, called HR875. This law will regulate all produce growth and farm animal production to eliminate the potential for natural and unnatural contamination.
actually you can eat the fiddleheads the emerging fronds on some ferns and they will grow just fine underneath a fruit tree so if ferns are what you have leave them and plant your fruit tree next to them
They do so many wild things with trees these days that you really need a PhD to be successful with that kind of thing. Trees are often built with one part of a tree for the roots, a second part for the stem and a third part for the top, fruiting part! And they are often hybrids - a combo of two trees. When you plant the seeds from the fruit, the seeds are so confused that you might not get a decent pear - certainly not the same as the pear that tasted so good.
I had a pear tree and apple tree in my yard years ago. The bugs always wrecked the fruit before we got a chance to eat them. But our neighbor had an empress-plum tree, and the bugs NEVER touched them.
I should've clipped a branch from his plum tree and planted it in the yard, or grafted it onto the apple tree.
It's fun to have fruit trees ... but from a survivalist standpoint there really is no point in an urban setting. People would just steal the fruit in the case of any disaster
thanks for the videos great job here in tn were i live they put back turkeys in our area and now you see hurdes of 30 to 40 to gether at a time do you guys do any turkey hunting
No, but I have watched alot of your videos and I check your videos alot, must say you are making an impression. I have a large collection of firearms myself. I'll think about joining.
We have pears and apple trees growing all around the building I work in. They are getting decimated by japanese beetles. We're in Indiana, last few years have been like this. We even spray now and nothing works, any thoughts.
I have planted fruit tree's in ever corner of my yard, plus one in the middle of my backyard, and I've discovered that there are wild plum trees in my tenants yard! It is great stuff...Just planted this year so I've a couple years before I actually get anything from them.
Love your gardening videos. So practical I am not into the whole survivalist thing, but I love how easy you show everyone the very practical side to gardening. Keep up the good work. I have been doing well with my garden for the first time this year so I learn a lot of tips from you.
i just moved to a small place in the country in georgia. I have been amazed to find : a vine with grapes on them..a little sour, so maybe they are muscadines? They got purple. I have a peach tree..but we couldnt eat them, due to bugs.. so next year, we will make sure we find out what to do prevent that from happening. We have walnuts, pecans AND I had my very first FIG from a beautful fig tree. They are yummy. So, I am learning. My yard is an adventure to discover :)
More than likely muscadines. Do they have big seeds inside and kind of a hard exterior? Sounds like your peaches need spraying- ours did. Good luck! SR
Pecans are normally Sep-Nov here in Georgia. The outer covering will go from green to more of a brown. Muscadines make some GREAT jelly and juice. We tried concord and other varieties but they didn't produce down here. Nursery guy says muscadines are the best for GA. What's the problem with your peaches? Ours got a icey looking funk on them. I assumed a fungus but it's an insect that does it. No way but to spray with those.
Great video, I have 2 apple trees in my backyard and some blueberries for fruit. Some reason apples only grow on one of the apple trees. I have a prune tree but no prunes yet.
Do you know what variety the apples are? They might grow but not PRODUCE in your area. We had that problem here. Also, you might be lacking a pollinator.
Well one of the trees right now has about 7 small apples growing. I think the other tree might have a problem with being in shade, could be a pollinator but I dont think ive seen any flowers on it.
hi this is the guy who doesnt know the difference between awesome and awful, to make this clear: i love your vids and appreciate your efforts, great work. :)
I planted my own pear tree when I was a child, but guess what, it got chopped last year, when we had to sell our property... grr and this year im missing the pear squish badly!
Now im trying to convince other people to plant one. or more :)
Most pear varieties are ready to be picked when they fall into your hand when you tip them up against the stem. You shouldn't have to pull them from the stem. They are still 'green' at this stage, and usually need a period of cold storage before bringing them out to ripen for eating, or further processing. It will improve the texture immensely. If they are 'ripe' on the tree they are likely starting to rot inside.
Bought a place in 2001 that has the remnants of an old pear orchard, also apples, cherries, plums, nectarine, walnut, hazlenut, and apricots. They are a lot of work to keep up with, but worth it.
great advise kev. but i may go a little over board when it comes to fruit trees "if thats possible" but i don't think i do my idea of having fruit trees is 4 apples. 4 pears. 6 fig. 2 plumb. and 2 cherry. i always say why are people planting these ____ trees when they could plant a whole bunch of fruit trees!
My girlfriend and I are planning on buying some land in NH and she wants an orchard of various fruit trees. I am all for it. Nothing better than fresh fruit off a tree!
You can eat ferns, what about fiddle heads? I haven't tried them myself but they're supposed to be mighty tasty.

Better go wild folks as they are attempting to outlaw the backyard garden.
There is the attempt to pass a law in south Carolina right now that if you are not a certified grower you can not have a garden.
If caught growing a garden you will be heavily fined and the garden pulled up.
Also the Bush admin. passed a law making it a criminal offence to store more than 3 days worth of food ( the anti-hording law)
Also, we can no longer have livestock (includes chickens) unless they are chipped.

what do you mean by chipped
