I wasted years just screwing around on guitar and never learned anything until I saw a real teacher. If you took lessons, you could definitely play this in a year, depending on your devotion.

He almost has no wrist movement during the solo. It's like his thumb is doing most of the picking work. Then you have Jeff Hanneman who plays with his forearm.

I'm gonna look them up now, lol. Jeff Hanneman has some chops, though, but his forearm picking seems very un-economical versus picking with wrist movement. My thumb sometimes does some picking, but my wrist is the brains behind my picking, I think.

Back when I was taking lessons, my teacher pointed out how my thumb was doing some picking. He said it was good, I think. I really can't remember. He never said it was wrong or a bad habit or anything. We all have different styles anyway. I used to fret power chords with my 1st and 3rd fingers, but for a long time now I've been fretting power chords with my 1st and pinky fingers after I noticed other players doing that. Much easier, in my opinion.

Chords in both ways, and with 1-2 fingers and 2-4 also (as Mustaine does in his famous 'Spider' technique). For good examples of 'thumb pickers' get to see EDU ARDANUY and RAFAEL MOREIRA (both super-talented brazilian rock players)

Rock House is an instructional DVD/online community for budding musicians, and this solo may seem easy to you, but for any aspiring metal guitarist, this solo will seem like the seven gates of hell to them. Especially when said band has had several albums out already, making it tough to come up with new things. Personally, I, and a ton of BFMV fans, like the solo. He can play it, he doesn't show off or attempt to do stuff he can't do, and it fits the song, all that matters.
