  • man,...the guitar sounds great..!! and its come from 70's ...wow!

  • From the land of whisky, a primier team hard blues rock: Stone the Crows and their superb vocalist, Maggie Bell.

  • someone doesn't need any love...

  • hell yeah!!!!!!! what a fuck of a band!!!!

  • What a great song . Did this original line up ever play the old Greens Playhouse in Glasgow in 70/71 ?. Any Glesca punters see this line up with the great Jimmy Dewar either at Greens or Burns Howf perhaps ?

  • Captures the era beautifuly.

  • RIP Jimmy Dewar: the best voice in rock n roll.

  • i do too...so much

  • just one word AMAZING

  • Great footage of a wonderful band . Bassist Jimmy Dewar went on to sing with Robin Trower for many years . What a voice he had .

  • @SPARKY53100

Yeah Jimmy had a great vocal sound on Trower's "Bridge of Sighs' album.

And drummer Colin Allen then went on to John Mayall's Bluesbreakers band and then Focus.

Such a shame the Les Harvey died. They could have been such a band going forward with Maggie and Les on fire !

  • @tonto4848 I think Colin Allen is a good drummer.. as I am most familiar with him having played with John Mayall but, surely didn't know he was ever with Focus.

How did he fare compared to Pierre van der Linden? That guy was phenomenal!

  • @margovallen . Yeah, Colin Allen was with Focus in 1974 -1975 after Pierre went off to do his own thing for a while ! I saw Focus in Sydney in '74 with Colin Allen on drums. One of the best concerts with Focus in their prime ! But Stone the Crows are my real favourites. I wish they could have produced more music for us !

  • @tonto4848 Call me a "late bloomer" but, I've not listened to much Stone The Crows in the past.. and I find them really interesting. I love their full sound and the different progressions all in a single tune.. and of course, I've always been a major James Dewar fan :-)

    Jimmy Dewar RIP.

  • @margovallen . Yeah ! The Crows were in the middle of their fourth album when their great guitarist Les Harvey ( brother of Alex) was electrocuted on stage. They finished the album with Jimmy McCulloch ( later Wings) filling in on guitar.

Check out on youtube their great version of "Danger Zone" with Maggie Bell and Les Harvey featured.

As for Jimmy Dewer, what a great bass player and powerful voice ! I loved his stuff on Robin Trower's "Bridge of Sighs" album.

  • a gang call from the foon

  • So thankful to have been born in the 50's!.......(Forever Young!!!)

  • (L)

  • OK

    BeatClub/RadioBremen

  • Somehow stumbled across this.Remember seeing them live.God knows when.GOOD sh*t.Wish iwas younger.

  • This is as good as it's possible for rock music to get. Fan-bloody-tastic!!!

  • That's what I call music...

  • WOOOOW! MAGGGIE...YEAH!!!

  • Elkie Brooks blew her away....sorry folks!!

  • Sorry but elkie brooks couldn't lace Maggies boots

  • you should be ashamed

  • @jonnylazer check out vinegar joe my friend....not ashamed in the least!

  • One of the truly great British bands !

If poor old Les Harvey had survived the electrocution, they could have been anything !

  • Cool

    Gibby

  • Nice witches brew!!!

  • Groovy man, It's just Groovy lol

  • This is awesome!

  • This song is called Love and was written by John McGinnis, the keyboard player. It's on the 'Ode To John Law' album and there's a live version (called Love '74) on the 'BBC Sessions Volume 1' album.

  • I get the impression that they are playing REALLY LOUD!

The basist would later go on to sing one of the most soulful songs of all time, "Long Misty Days".

  • The intro freaked me out, I thought Jimmy Page was on stage with them! Cool to see someone else using a bow on guitar. This is the first I'm hearing of this group, I just never had the wonder of Youtube to explore them even though I've meant to for years because of the Led Zep connection.

  • James Dewar,,,not only the voice of an angel (Maggie too of course),, but I swear he had the best white afro of the time :o)

  • This song it was emmission my induction in before 20 years in radio (Dimotiko radiofono Giannitson 99.2 fm)! But as of Leslie Harvey ! And this edition at is very good !

  • my favourite STC track. thanks for posting

  • First saw STC at the Greens Playhouse (Later the Apollo) in 71.On the bill were Beggars Opera And Arc...Maggie and the Boys just about took the roof off the old place!!!

  • The veryfirst concert I attended was in 1970. STC opened for Ten Years After. Whatashow!Of course, Jim Dewar went on to sing and play Bass for Robin Trower and Maggie is probably best known as the'other' voice on Every Picture Tells A Story. They kicked butt!

  • STC were very underrated!

    What a great band.

  • Under promoted as well.Great band.R.I.P. Les Harvey.

  • Actually they were rated about right.

  • amazing lead singers Jimmy Dewar RIP and Maggie Bell...STC were such an amazing band...tremendously underrated...

  • quality music from the scots

  • The man that wrote this song (keyboard player until 71' John McGinniss) was my Craft and Design teacher at secondary school! That is 1998-2002 Hard man he was. He has retired now.

  • a voice that totally blows me away

  • Heard Maggie Bell on Radio 2 this week and she did an importu duet with Paul Carrick, brilliant. They should do an album together, their voices blended in well.

  • I saw Stone The Crows at Boston Glider Dome and I stood behind Maggie in the queue waiting to buy some fags. My claim to fame. On the bill was Nazareth, Atomic Rooster & Yes. Les Harvey was still with them then, poor Les, but I saw them later with Stevie Howe as guest lead.

  • Thx for posting. It's really good to hear that Maggie Bell's still in incredible voice.

I have an mp3 file of her doing Black Girl with John Baldry. Does anyone know if this is from an album?

  • Its from an album called John Baldry 'It Ain't Easy'

The first side of the album is produced by Rod Stewart and the second side by Elton John.

The vynll version was on the Warner Bros serial number K 46088

  • Thanks very much. I'll have to hunt it down now.

  • Saw Stone the Crows on the same bill as Taste in the Music Hall in Aberdeen years ago. Great night, STC were a brilliant live band. There is a dvd out now from a STC concert in Germany with interviews with Maggie and Colin, worth buying.

  • thanxs les harvey!!!

  • wooooooooooow

    thanks so much!

the best crows line up ever!

  • wee correction, Maggie sang the theme to 'Taggart' not Hazell. Song was called 'No Mean City'

  • That's right. She also did another TV theme later on. I'll have to do some research.

  • didn't the lead guitarist get electrocuted whilst they were doing an album ?

  • No the gutarist Les Harvey was electrocuted on stage at Swansea Top Rank right at the very start, Maggie had not even come to the stage. I was there in the audience and Les had just bought a round of drinks at the bar. Another really fine live band.

  • Yes, i was at that concert too. Terribly sad day. This is a great version of "Love'74". I saw the band later again when they had Jimmy McCulloch in place of Les. Les's death really affected Maggie.

  • brilliant vocals-love alex harvey+leslie+frankie miller always remember maggie singing the theme tune to the detective serie" hazel:

  • Ive got an album of theirs from waaaay back called " big jim salter| And apart from Maggie Jimmy Dewer the bass player( ex-lulu & the luvvers) and vocalist does a couple of solos that are quite magnificent let me know and ill see what lcan do. Belive thats John McGuinness pre McGuines flint days but is it me or does everyune know Maggie recorded the theme for taggart

  • Maggie is the awesome voice on "Every Picture Tells A Story" that sounded so good with Rod Stewart in 1971. She was listed as "vocal abrasives" on the album!

  • If you think this is great like me then check out these other two songs on youtube. 'I'm a Good Woman' by 'Cold Blood' (vocals by Lydia Pense) and

'Indian Rope Man' by 'Julie Driscoll,Brian Auger & the Trinity' (a Richie Havens cover). Hope you enjoy...

  • Great Version of 'Love'. Does anybody have 'Sad Mary' footage?

  • Better than jefferson airplane, easily, check out frankie miller and carol grimes.

  • Maggie is touring all over UK with the British Blues Quartet . Buy the magazine " Blues Matters" She is playing at some of their concerts over the summer.

She bounded onstage and blew the roof off with " Wishing Well " , " Years go passing By " No bad for a 62 year old !!

  • been a life long fan first time i have seen this just brilliant thanks and yes maggie is still around!

  • wow! used to see these at the Red Lion pub in Leytonstone late 60's early 70's 25p entry 5/- they lost a great guitarist Les Harvey sadly electrocuted. Can Maggie still be around?

  • Seen Maggie Bell last week in Glasgow , absolute knockout show. Now touring with the British Blues Quartet m great band which includes Colin the original Stone the Crows drummer. Chris Hodginson , excellent bass player and Miller Anderson on vocals and guitar and Zoot Money on keyboards . They are on tour mow try to see them , you wont be dissapointed

  • Grateful for that info! Haven't seen her for over 30 years!Hope she gets down this way soon!

  • That's true. I also saw them at the Crystal Palace Bowl Garden Party around May/June 1972. They were by far the best on the bill.

I actually crept into the grounds the day before and saw them rehearse for the show. "The Edgar Winter Group" was on the same bill as well as Frankie Millers' "Full House".
