@ingeloveswobbly Escaflowne is a great, great anime show for 'beginners.' Lots of fun and action, and it's philosophical enough to ask a lot of questions but is still approachable.

Both the animation and english voice acting are top notch. (The japanese voice acting is, too, but most people who speak english and aren't hard core anime fans will probably prefer a dub.)

Definitely give it a try.

You know what I love? That after all these years, when Escaflowne had a very short run on Fox Kids, that several of the viewing audience felt a connection with the piece and sought for years to find the rest of the series. THAT means this is a powerful piece of narrative.

The ova WAS better in pretty much every category. I watched the series first and then the movie so no bias here. The animation, story, dialog, character presentation and even music was better. They didn't even include some of the great music in the series, that was in the movie. I don't even think they had Sora, but I could be wrong on that. (Memory is bad.) Anyways, that's not to say you shouldn't watch the series.

Unfairly unknown? The tv series used to air on Saturday mornings on Fox Kids. It was butchered, and obviously being targeted at the wrong demo, but that's pretty decent exposure. Even this film saw a limited theatrical release here in North America.

@OfficialPrincessPink if you saw it on Fox Kids, then it was chopped up and you missed some important scenes. Watch it again without the censorship and you will get the full story. For a lot of people it was the first anime they saw and I am glad Fox showed it.
