I wouldn't call him a "great musician," he was barely a decent musician at all. I mean, they often unplugged his amps he was so bad, lol. He was the pure embodiment of punk, though. He is remembered for who he was not what he did, and I'm sure that's just the way he'd want it.

I'm a huge Misfits, Clash, Sex Pistols etc. fan, and it seems to me that you're the one that doesn't know what punk stands for if you're judging other people and bands that actually did break a mold and make a statement of individuality in the world, even if they didn't sound or act like the sex pistols. Punk is a way of being and thinking, it isn't a style of music or a fad or a trend. It never dies.

Let alon one of the "greatest musicians" coming from a musician (and a fan of the pistols, and punk) He was just an image. No offense to him or the Pistols. Steve jones played the bass on most of the recordings, and they unplugged him live.
