I'm from a small Polish town alot like the one in the movie . most everthing in it rings true.the wedding, the blue collar work, deer camp (always one asshole) and the bar scene was as close to my life as possible. Now lets talk Nam,in 13 months in country I never even heard of this Russian roulette shit and I have yet to meet another Vet that has. Good movie though and Stevies Mom was just like my buddy Fred's
@northfourty I'm not surprised to hear that about the "Russian Roulette" business. From the very first time I saw this movie, I always wondered about that myself. I was just a small kid during Vietnam but I never heard that once, and I'm sure that if it was even remotely true, the media would have reported it over and over again. Hollywood and the truth don't necessarily go together.
This movie ruined this song for me, don't get me wrong this is a great movie but every time i here this song it makes me feel sad for Christopher Walken's character. :(
ONE OF MY FAVOURITE FILMS OF ALL TIME - MERYL STREEP, ROBERT DE NIRO, CHRISTOPHER WALKEN, THEY WERE ALL SO YOUNG, GREAT MUSIC, MOVING PLOT, VERY NOSTALGIC, ONE OF THE BEST PORTRAYALS OF WHAT IT MUST HAVE BEEN LIKE TO BE SENT TO VIETNAM AND THE ONES THEY LEFT BEHIND.
AWESOME MOVIE! ONE THE GREATEST WHAT I'VE SEEN..AND THIS IS ONE THE BEST SCENES OF THE DEER HUNTER,NO DOUBT..AS IF THIS SCENE REALLY HAPPENED IN REAL LIFE,THE DYNAMICS BETWEEN THESE ACTORS IN THIS MOVIE IS REALLY SOMETHING!
“...The Deer Hunter” - a 1978 American war drama film about a trio of Russian American steel worker friends and their infantry service in the Vietnam War and was one of the first major theatrical films to be critical of the American involvement in Vietnam following 1975 when the war officially ended..."
the best American movie of all times in my humble opinion, very artistic and aboundant in emotions someone between the lines; cheers from Poland to all fans of good cinematography
F*cking A, man! I saw Franki Valli and the Four Seasons a few years back and he dedicated this song to veterans, as he likely, always did after this film. The song will always be associated with this great masterpiece. I think this film was ranked #53 of the greatest films of all time, but it is so much better. Just incredibly moving, a timeless classic. It always makes me cry.
you can tell walken is crazy. to think he made all those foker movies so many years later. axel kicked for the steelers. alcohol is the worst drug ever
lol, I'm actually writing a thesispaper on film soundtracks for my music class and I'm using this scene as my prime example of how a simple love song can forshadow the terrible events that wll unfold later. This song is used to show that this is the last time time this group of friends will be together in peace and as a whole.
@Calatafimi I doubt it, the paper is due next month (it's pretty much finished but I don't think I found the words to correctly describe the feeling this scene gives.) I'm just a small town boy from AL... I doubt anyone like me has any sort of greatness in store for them.

I think the fight put up by the Vietnamese was stupendous. REAL men know how to survive.

That's exactly what I'm saying for years about this movie. Your work will be awesome for sure !
After that song, Dzundza plays a sad piece on the piano and one second after, they are in Vietnam.
Between "Can't take my eyes off you" and the happiness, and Vietnam, you have Chopin, the transition and the end of the party. :(
Unfortunately english is not my language so I won't be able to read your thesis when it will be ended. One day they'll translate it. Best seller ! :)
