@coreyawood- The altima has needed a starter and an alternator in it's entire life. It still has the original brake rotors, balljoints, shocks, exhaust system, valve cover has never been off, and the clutch (while nearly shot) is original as well. Interior hasn't a rip in it, either. My ranger has 154k on it and it's also all original. The old GM's I've owned have all needed major work at 100k or less. So the argument that the old stuff is better simply does not hold water imo. (and experience.)
@mixedmaniac17 Skylark custom. @coreyawood- yes the 350-4bbl would get the drop on a cobalt in a drag race, but if it's stock you will be seeing taillights within a quarter mile. Don't get me wrong I love old iron but it is in no way superior to the modern stuff. It was made to last longer (with rebuilds) compared to today's disposable stuff, but I think my daily drivers (an altima with 208k on it and a ranger with 154k on it, all original, the both of them) speak for how far cars have come.
@LaxBroAdam about 10 to 12mpg. Non overdrive transmissions really suck the gas, especially when driving at modern speeds. People that insist that the old stuff was so much better should try driving a 30mile, 90mph commute sometime.I wore my buick out..it was simply not made for going that fast for a long distance like today's cars are. It got 9mpg when i was using it to commute.....I still think the old stuff is cooler though ;)
I had a 68 LeSabre custom 400 with the 350 4 bbl. took off from a stop light turning left, next to a chevy cobalt. Dude beat me around the corner and at the next light he's all braggin bout his 4 banger. I rolled down my window and told him if I put it on the floor, he would've had to get some body work done cuz I would've taken out his whole left side, and to hit me up in a staight line. He shut up.
Oh that Buick 350 was such a beautiful sound. I had a '68 LeSabre with the 350 4BBL. I produced 280 hp and 375 lbs ft of torque and it really moved that huge monster!
My dad was a good professional painter and we fixed the dents and went to a Napa and got Napa Red Enamel. He sprayed it in the back yard on a windy day, and it came out gleaming!!
Those were the days! It was so much simpler and so much more fun.
what was the mpg of this? would the mpg be the same as the 1967 lesabre with a 340 v8 and 220hp? cause they put in bigger engines in 1968 a 350 v8 230hp
@LaxBroAdam about 12mpg, no matter what. 9mpg if I drive it the way I drive my altima (85mph on the highway and 65 on back roads)...those non overdrive non lockup automatics really sucked for fuel mileage....lol! The sad thing is...my 4cyl altima would smoke the buick in anything other than a zero to 30mph run. Modern cars really are faster and better for everyday use. This simply makes the old cars even cooler :) (character)

Sup dude? What kind of Buick is that? My dad has two hardtop Wildcats, some fun projects to work on, and we often had the carburetor issue on the one that runs til he swapped it out for a Summit Street and Strip. Now it runs a little better, loud as ever. My crazy ass dad still wants to put glass packs on it, he just can't get enough. Ah well, hope your Buick is doing as good as ours (the driveable one) xD
@Victor44413 I do have a big block that will eventually go in it :o) Also, your comment of the "average family sedan"...doesn't hold water. Go ahead and go test drive a new altima, malibu, sonata, taurus sho, etc and get back to me. There is no way the "average family sedan" of the 60's would hold a candle (other than the 60's car being WAY COOLER :) ) to the "average family sedan" of today. And these are cars powered by V6's. The V8 cars of today...are WAY faster! They just don't FEEL as fast.
@Victor44413...and my skylark, (not shown...I sold this one) I rebuilt the 350 and TH350 and threw a holley 750dp on top, and while it's pretty quick about to 80 or 90 that's it, it falls on it's face around 110. IT gets 12mpg. It hates cruising at 90, it prefers 60. My daily driver (a 5 speed, over 200,000 mile, nissan altima I bought from my uncle for peanuts) will cruise at 90 to 100 all day long, getting 30mpg. It may not have the guttural V8 power but it's quick enough for daily driving.
@Victor44413 I may not have lived thru that era but I have owned many cars from that era and I believe you are looking thru rose-tinted glasses. Unless it was a big block (which WAS the supercar of it's day) there is no way they would have a chance. You are mistaking how fast a car "feels" for how fast it "is". Besides, the 60's cars weren't fast. They were QUICK. A modern 4cyl car is more at ease at 90mph on the freeway than the 60's cars were. How do I know? I have a 69 buick skylark 4drht. :)
I see alot of fighting back and forth in these comments, for those of you too young to have lived thru that era of muscle cars, trust me, carb or fuel injection, the average family car of that era would have today's "sportcars, high performance cars" eating their dust, unless your moving up to supercar status, you have no clue what it's like to step on the gas peddle of a 60's or 70's car, heck! It was almost as good as sex!!! Maybe better! LOL....
@ford9572- Carbs Suck. I know how to make them work and tune them but they still suck. They are way more complicated than fuel injection, btw, you're mistaking the simple outside appearance for what is a "mechanical computer". If carbs are so much better then how come even third world countries are using fuel injection in thier cars? Also, my carbed car starts up just fine, but I will convert it to an EFI setup soon. NASCAR still uses carbs because NASCAR can control them better, less loopholes.
@twoeightythreez i have a 95 impala ss thats efi and a 72 buick skylark custom with a 4 barrel carb and ill tell you right now that id take that 4 barrel carb over the efi any day. just my preference tho.. you can do some good tuning on carbs. but you can do some other fun things with efi. its all pref. the older guys seem to like carbs alot. (go figure) i like um to tho theyre cool.

It is a rare skill. My first car was a 1978 Toyota Pick-up truck, which had a carburettor engine, which I had to jab the accelerator pedal a bit before cranking the engine. I miss doing that.
He knows how to start a carbureted car with a cold engine. Presses the gas a shot or two before cranking, waits a split second, then hits the starter. A rare skill then and today. Fires right up instead of grinding over & over like is seen in many other videos.
My 71 buick 350 did the same thing. I bought new rocker arms and got rid of the original ones. The clackin went away......problem solved. The rockers are non-adjustable in these engines....sucks
i just love the old tachometers that these cars have. a solid bar, the new round ones have nothing on looking through the wheel and seeing that bar speedo
It sounds like a diesel because the oil is cold (snow on the ground) and the lifters are bleeding down. That can be cured by running a lighter wieght oil in cold weather and it will help the 11 MPG that that car most likely would get on a good day.
