I stumbled onto this video a while back and i am so knocked out by Robbies tone and emotion that he plays with on this...wow he squeezes it out of that zumm on this.
This is a 1999 D10 ZumSteel 9 pedals and 9 knee levers made by Bruce Zumsteg of Harrisonville,MO(ST Louis). The end plates are black making it look like the tuner head extends past end of the guitar but they don't. THE unison thing ROBBY does is raising the 1st string(F#) to G# to match the 3rd string. On a standard steel this would be a RKL but not on this steel. Yes he is GREAT on steel and he is also my COUSIN! :) He sold this steel anyway and has a NEW SHOW PRO! among others
The unison thing R_O_B_B_Y does is raising the 1st string(F#) to G# to match the 3rd string. Normally a RKL but not on this steel which he no longer has anyway. He is my Cousin!!!! :)
This video is PURE MAGIC...love the drummer, love the video quality, love every aspect of this video. Robbie has now become one of my newest heroes. Got to agree with 67dodgeepolara....brings tears to the eyes. Excellence at my age always makes me cry. Part of getting older I guess. keep 'em coming...a good cry is a good thing every once in a while. thanks Bill RC
I was so lucky! I was friends with Rob and his mother and father,Doyle and Bernice. I got to see Robbie develope into the "GREAT" steel player he is.He is also a kind and sweet person. I can still vision him listening to the music of others and learning every LICK! BBS
BucksOwin ,that is indeed a Zum 1999 model,it has 9 knees and 9 floors.Bruce Zumsteg delivered this guitar to Robbie at that very show,I now own it and it plays and sounds as good as it did then,Bruce buils amazing guitars.
Steel playing simply doesnt get better than this, the mans talent and passion is immense, as for distractions, this is an amateur camcorder video, hello!! If a bus went passed who cares, I hear only the steel and this mans playing is just awesome!
I would be happy even if it was in black and white! I think you have misunderstood my remark, it was not a criticism, the very opposite in fact! I was merely reacting to the thrashing and banging remarks! Thank you for posting it is wonderful!
The steel performance is beautiful but the drummer sounds like someone building a house!! All that thrashing and banging is tasteless in this song!! Take a lesson.A warning of the modulation would have been nice too!
@cornbobrimlove I agree about drums drummers have this notion that they have to knock everyone over with ten million rolls and accents, there was a REASON the Opry didn't allow drums until the 50's I would MUCH rather hear a rhythm guitar or mandolin. a Snare and high hat is ALL that is needed!.
Modulation.. I do NOT agree with you Hit the REWIND button... Bill Thanks for posting Robbie is a great player////That Steel was on the forum not to long ago for sale nice ZUM...Thanks Bill
Wow - I do love a steel guitar and Robby Turner's playing this lovely favorite song of mine is wonderful. It's just so smooth and looks so effortless the way he handles his instrument here. What a great sound. Thank you for posting. - Paula
Robbie is now playing In Shooter Jennings' banf the 357's, Shooter is the son of Waylon and Jessi Colter, check out my videos to see Shooter and a couple videos have Robbie In them
This is the tune that really "got me going" with the Gatlin Bros and it's a really beautiful song! This rendition does the song justice, that's for sure! Great ride!
Bill, I understand , things would get complex with all the copyrights and royalties and profit sharing. It would take a pro media company to take a task like that on. You do a fine job already, this is one of the best videos I have seen , a new name to me a very fine player , and I love those Zum steels,
Fantastic, more of this guy please, Bill thanks for posting I was looking forward to the Knoxville videos this is just tremendous to be able to see all these great steel players. how about a dvd ?
Great just a great superb rendition on a wonderful song...More Robbie video's please........Touch, tone and class what more could a steel enthusiastic want....

Well would you rather have this video with an "amateur camcorder" or no video at all????
Pretty much a nobrainer in my opinion.

Hi Pedalman.
I agree with you. This is briliant. This was recommended by a friend who is also a great steelplayer in Glasgow.

I can only imagine a powerful duet between
Mr. Turner and the great E. Presley.
However, I hope to effectuate a duet between
Mr. Turner and The Legendary Danny O'Doul.

Does anyone know what he does in the C-Bflat-F sequence were the notes are unisono ( 1.20 and 1.22 ).Which pedal or lever does he use.
azzaz1 4 years ago
Robbie raises his first string a whole tone to make the change you are talking about. This is pretty common on most steels now.
