Congradulations your video of this theme from the Battle of Britain shal take part in my victory themes CD for a WW2 version of Risk that I have been woking on for the last three months again well done my friend well done!!!
I seem to remember a german bomber crashing into the sea and then this music started and we were entertained to a minute or two of the Luftwaffe getting their backsides well and truly kicked.
God Bless all those who fought in the skies of Britain in this dark period and although I have a problem with Eastern europeans today I can't thank their grandfathers enough for their contribution.
@Aspiekidvideos I saw the movie in the theatre and the whole audience sucked in their breath at that scene. A bit phoney, but by then you wanted the Luftwaffe to get it square in the face.
william walton wrote the original music, this was rejected by the producers.
ron goodwin was brought in to re-score the picture.
waltons good friend laurence olivier said he would go public with it if some of waltons music was not retained. so the battle in the air segment of 4.51 was.
About one-fifth of all allied participants in the conflict were from the Commonwealth, European and other countries. They came as far as from Australia and Jamaica. The Polish were outstanding pilots....perhaps the best of the war.
The Coomander of the 11 Squadron that saved the day was Sir Keith Park who was actually a New Zealander.
But hats off to the brave british to whom the free world owes a considerable debt.
@Equalizerfan YES TO POLISH PIOLTS, COMMONWEALTH LIKE AUSTRALIA ALSO TO OUR CANADIAN SOLDIERS BRITISH WE SAVED THE FREE WORLD IF WE WOULD HAVE FAILED EVEN THE USA WOULD NOT BE FREE STUPID YANKEES THINK THEY DID IT ALL BUT WERE THE HELL WERE THEY BATTLE OF BRITIAN NO PLACE EXCEPT SOME AMERICANS CAME TO CANADA TO ENLIST.
Thank you to all those pilots who lost their lives for the British isles, we salute you and we also thank aerodromes and airfield crew for keeping the planes serviceable and in the air, like Duxford (used for filming the battle of Britain film). Thank you for everyone who fought alongside others to protect our island from invasion.
I took my mother to see this film when it was first released - at the Majestic Theater in Dallas. She was 13 years old when the Battle of Britain was fought, and has always been a great admirer of the people who fought it. I think the title "Ace is High" would be better applied to this theme. In the theatrical release, it was also the closing theme. I disappointed to find that it was replaced in the DVD version with something less inspiring.
Re. my message below, I should add that it can be argued that .the most successful RAF pilot during the precise (repeat precise) period in question, (with 17 kills) was Sergeant Josef Frantisek, a Czech national who was with the Polish 303 Squadron. English born Eric Lock had 16.5 kills in the precise period but after the Battle of Britain he went on to bring his overall total to 26.5 victories. Whatever the nationality - all heroes.
The dog fight scenes in this were used for Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. The attack on Death Star was also copied from WW2 british movie The Dam Busters with a near identical dialogue.

@burnley5960 The highest scoring RAF pilot in the Battle of Britain was Flight Lieutenant Eric Stanley Lock DSO, DFC & Bar. He was born in Shropshire,

When the Limeys beat Goering in the air, Hitler couldn't invade without incurring losses too heavy to bear. So, instead of rushing long range fighters and heavy bombers into production, along with a modern attack plane to replace the Stuka, Hitler decided to invade Russia, and thereby lost the war. In other words, although no one knew it at the time, the Limeys had, for all intents and purposes, won WW2 in the summer and fall of 1940.
@KonigNick Why is 'Limey' an insult? The Royal Navy's use of Lime and other citrus fruits contributed to Britain becoming the world's first naval superpower! It's a compliment that tells how the British employed the finest scientific minds of the time to overcome disease that crippled other navies :)
@dachtorstrange i dont mind being called a " Limey " if you dont mind me calling you a " Yank " yank. as both were terms of endearment during our joint fight to put Evil out of action.
Oooooh the "nazi" germans we all learned to hate so deeply, in a intellectually perverted affectionate kind of way as the movies and books taught us to. After all, they were pure evil personified.
They don't seem quite as bad when you dig deep into the archives of real history now do they? But of course, not many do.
those of you who want to watch the movie, go to my channel i just uploaded the full movie, and you dont have to go to no gay website and download a load of shit.
Another thigs: In Spanish: saben los creadores de peliculas como las guerras de las galaxias se vieron en estas analogias para hacer las peliculas ( las batallas aereas y hasta en la musica)....
Never have I felt more patriotic than when listening to this music.
It makes me wish that during the 18th century we had held on to all our colonies and been far more tough, destroyed france and created the ultimate world.
Most interesting commentary (by poster Soundtrackcollector) on the Walton score used for the climactic battle scene. I thought it odd when I saw it as a kid, but now appreciate the art of it. I'd like to see that posted (maybe it is; I'll go look for it)!
Earlier today, I received permission to nominate Ron Goodwin the composer of this music for a belated knighthood. If you support this plan, please contact me. This film was excellent and it was Ron's music that made the impact!
I wouldn't oppose a posthumousgong for Goodwin, but the most thrilling music for the apocalyptic "Battle in the Air", was composed by Sir William Walton. There was some friction as Walton was initially commissioned for the whole soundtrack, but Goodwin was brought in to provide an alternative score. Goodwin's was used, APART from Walton's "Battle" music, so neither was 100% happy. But when I saw the film, it was "Battle" that sent me looking up the composer!
@Barronator I know exactly what you mean - the intensely lyrical quality of 'Battle in the Air' strikes quite a chord, doesn't it?
But i do rather think that Goodwin gets sneered upon while Walton (as a 'proper' composer of great renown and tbf skill) is too highly lauded for his BoB work.
Having heard both scores, Goodwin's is the better one for an action movie - much more dramatic - you can't have a war movie full of tone-poems or everyone gets confused! lol
Blame Goodwin's score being chosen over Walton's for Harry Saltzman's bad ear for music - He similarly hated the Goldfinger and Diamonds Are Forever. It's well known that Olivier refused to have his name on the credits if they didn't at least include one cue composed by Sir William Walton.
The MOST important battle of WWI with no doubt.. if Britain had fallen to the Germans.. D-DAY would never have happened.... and in the worlds of Churchill.... ....owed by so many to so few ... to ALL pilots of all nations who flew I salute you !
we didn't even need to go to war in 1939. hitler didn't want to fight us, he was happy to entertain the upper classes & just wanted mainland europe. we were taken into the war because we where coming out of a depression & we needed to kick start the economy. the only time you get full employment is during a war & it's a quick way to get rid of afew million people. the same thing could happen again if our leaders continue the pointless bullshit wars they are waging in the middle east.
I think you will find that Germany was the country with the overheating economy that needed war. To say that Hitler didn't want to fight britain is incorrect he needed to take out Britain and the Empire they were too much of a threat to his plans for Europe. Sorry my working class family fought to stop fascism Ask anyone from the Channel Islands if the Germans treated them any better because they were British.
i too am working class. i've had members of my family fight in every war & conflict since 1900,including the small sideshows. i also served with 6 yrs in the forces so don't think i'm against the militery. what i'm against is the pointless waste of service personel in wars that arn nesscery & that in the long run change nothing. who is one of the major players in the EU.... germany, who always sides with them to get their own way....france, who always suffers the UK. i can go on if you want!!!
she was a terrorist & got what she deserved & i believe we fucked up Napoleon's plans as well!. the french & Germans have always wanted control over England, but have never been able to do it militarily. now our leaders just sign our power over to them, & now with the discovery of large oil deposits in the Falklands i suppose we'll hand sovereignty over to the argies...making the deaths of 253 service personnel in 1982 another waste of life for political means.
W1. I think the English have always classified their enemies as terrorists. You can understand why we fear the English so much. You are totally brutal and love to murder us. If you have seen the film "the Patriot", it shows how the English use to put women and children inside churches and burn them alive. In Iraq, the English took no prisoners. The Iraqis surrendered and were pushed into a holding area, where they were bulldozed into the sand. At least they died of suffocation, not burning.
i'll admit in the past the British methods were sometimes brutal, but i think your allegation of bulldozing iraqis is rubbish.right through history all invading forces have used brutal methods to suppress natives, it's not something i condone but it happened. i don't understand why the British are expected to apologise just because we had the last great empire the world has seen & in the process of building that empire brought industrial progress to alot of the world.
W1. It is interesting to see you describe Iraqis as "natives". I quite like you, as at least you are honest. No one expects England to apologize for anything. It is not in your nature to ever say sorry. You keep saying "British". The Indians and Scots were also British. But it was only the English who were brutal colonialists. It is true that the English did not take prisoners in Iraq. That came out in the series "SAS Are you tough enough?". The use of bullozers to liquidate prisoners was usual.
Utter bollocks. The Patriot is the biggest load of anti-British propaganda to be produced since the fall of the Third Reich. Most serious AMERICAN historians agree.
As for bulldozing Iraqis, again, total bollocks. Funny how in Basra we Brits were going for the hearts and minds approach while the US was busy stripping and torturing prisoners in Abu Ghraib and illegally detaining them at Guantanamo
The Patriot is appalling anti-British propaganda. Just take the depiction of the treatment of black slaves. The British championed (and indeed enforced) the abolition of slavery and yet this reality is twisted beyond belief in The Patriot. Just one of countless crocks of nonsense spouted in this film.
@w1h2i3t4h5a6m7 are you saying we only fought against the threat of invasion ,our way of life and the downfall of europe because we wanted to kick the start the economy interesting angle but total bollocks !
@79danhill open your mind & think about what i'm saying, the germans didn't want another long war. there was assination attempts on hitler, hess flew to scotland to try and organise a peaceful end to hostilities. we could of stayed out of the war & let the reich tear itself apart. we went to war because we needed to get the country's economy moving again.
@w1h2i3t4h5a6m7 Actually we went to war simply because the Reich attacked Poland, with whom we had a treaty. If they had not, we might well have been content to have left Germany alone, as a buffer against Bolshevism.
@CinnAlla British foreign policy towards Europe has always been the maintenance of the balance of power. Britain was there to maintain that balance throughout the late 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Prussia (aka Germany) overstepped her mark once and was not checked which resulted in the occupation of Paris in 1871. The buggers tried it again twice and were checked twice.
Greater than many people realise. Hitler never really took Britain seriously after Dunkirk, and considered the failure to win the Battle of Britain as nothing more than annoying distraction. If only he realised that had he invaded Britain, not only would he have eliminated another enemy but would have also prevented D-Day from ever being possible; freeing up units to be used on the Eastern Front.
We'll Hitler was hoping to smash British moral, not invade. Invasion was nearly impossible. The RAF could just be moved outside of German range and the Royal Navy would have smashed any invasion force. There were to many well armed and dug in Canadian infantry and armoured units In Britian at the time for Paratroopers. And finally the Germans had zero experience in amphibious assaults. Invasion was nearly impossible and Hitler knew that
Hitler only aimed to destroy the British moral after it became clear to him that the RAF could not be destroyed. Operation Sealion was already planned out and ready; all that was required was for the RAF to be destroyed so that the Luftwaffe could prevent the RN from intevening.
Also, Britain had very little heavy weapons and vehicles as they had been left behind after Dunkirk and Germany had some amphibious experience from when they invaded Norway.
Of course. That was, arguably, what lost him the war.
If he had defeated Britain then the Axis would have freed up a lot of forces that were tied down by the British (Africa to start with, later Asia, Italy and France). Europe would be secure as the US would lack a staging area for an invasion and Germany would have the land and air forces to beat Russia.
That is why I consider the Battle of Britain to be the turning point of the war.
Correct. With the british isles secure the US would have had much difficulties in shipping lend-lease and aid to the USSR. The British part of that program would have been outright eliminated. Instead, English heavy industry would have produced for Germany.
Much can be said about the war, but this was the pivotal and deciding factor. Had the Luftwaffe fielded the He100 and FW187 we would have had a different outcome.
And let us not forget our Polish friends! And the Free French. The Belgians, Irish. Israeli. and the rest who joined our defence of the realm! God Bless ALL who fought to save our freedom!
This film brings back such happy memories of my beloved grandad, he was a WO in the RAF during WW2. He introduced me to it when I was about 8 and have loved it ever since especially during the part were i believe this tune is played and we abliterise te germans....it is an amazing music choice on the producers front. I'm 28 now but i still love it although i wish my grandad was still here to c it with me. RIP Gramps and the brave men whofaught and lost heir lives
When i see this, and hear the music, i feel pride, and gratitude to all those who fought for us, who died for us in the skies to protect us from the Nazi hoarde that lay so close across the channel.
Well done lads - i'm proud to call myself british because of you lot!
I'm just so sorry that modern britain went down the tubes and you died to protect a lot of selfish politicians, self aggrandising 'celebrities' and a society that no longer cares about anyone other than themselves.
As a U.S. "yank" , I forever salute our British comrades for holding the line for freedom until we were fully into the fray. I also salute your excellent treatment of our Tuskeegee airmen who laid in all on the line for your valiant bombers.
Britain's greatest film theme composer - never knighted! I will be setting up a site for people all around the world to petition the UK Government to have Ron belatedly knighted by HM The Queen!
There are great action sequences in this film but its the music that makes it the classic that it is. It plays with all our emotions. Sadness, pride , elation , its all encapsulated in this terrific score.
Having listened to both scores, I have to say that Goodwin's pisses all over Walton's. William Walton's score was classical and intellectual, whereas Ron Goodwin's makes you want to jump up and cheer!
England always prevails, whether it is true or not. Nearly all the main characters in the Battle were not English, by the way. For example, Dowding was Scottish, but played by Olivier with a phoney English accent. Also Park was played by Trevor Howard, again with a phoney English accent.
Great tribute to the men of the Battle of Britain, the Few. Men like Billy Fiske and the other magnificent American pilots who came over as Knights of the Air to save the world.
from 40s to 70s was the best era for war films :P

When the Limeys beat Goering in the air, Hitler couldn't invade without incurring losses too heavy to bear. So, instead of rushing long range fighters and heavy bombers into production, along with a modern attack plane to replace the Stuka, Hitler decided to invade Russia, and thereby lost the war. In other words, although no one knew it at the time, the Limeys had, for all intents and purposes, won WW2 in the summer and fall of 1940.

@dachtorstrange English not Limey. Limey is an insult.
KonigNick 1 year ago
@KonigNick Why is 'Limey' an insult? The Royal Navy's use of Lime and other citrus fruits contributed to Britain becoming the world's first naval superpower! It's a compliment that tells how the British employed the finest scientific minds of the time to overcome disease that crippled other navies :)

This film was excellent and it was Ron's music that made the impact!
lincsposter 2 years ago 74
@lincsposter you have my support for Ron,s Knighthood. and bloody well deserved it would be.
imanglo 1 year ago
@lincsposter Certainly second this. Goodwin was one of Britain's finest composers. Staggeringly unknown & underappreciated, I think.
KITCHENOFDISTINCTION 1 year ago
@lincsposter
Barronator 1 year ago
@Barronator I know exactly what you mean - the intensely lyrical quality of 'Battle in the Air' strikes quite a chord, doesn't it?
But i do rather think that Goodwin gets sneered upon while Walton (as a 'proper' composer of great renown and tbf skill) is too highly lauded for his BoB work.
Having heard both scores, Goodwin's is the better one for an action movie - much more dramatic - you can't have a war movie full of tone-poems or everyone gets confused! lol
KrillLiberator 1 year ago
@lincsposter ....absolutely
rollotomasi1964 1 year ago
Blame Goodwin's score being chosen over Walton's for Harry Saltzman's bad ear for music - He similarly hated the Goldfinger and Diamonds Are Forever. It's well known that Olivier refused to have his name on the credits if they didn't at least include one cue composed by Sir William Walton.

So sad...all for nothing. Blair and Brown have sold the Britain to the EU and the head of the EU is Germany!
Possybeatty 2 years ago 2
we didn't even need to go to war in 1939. hitler didn't want to fight us, he was happy to entertain the upper classes & just wanted mainland europe. we were taken into the war because we where coming out of a depression & we needed to kick start the economy. the only time you get full employment is during a war & it's a quick way to get rid of afew million people. the same thing could happen again if our leaders continue the pointless bullshit wars they are waging in the middle east.
w1h2i3t4h5a6m7 2 years ago
I think you will find that Germany was the country with the overheating economy that needed war. To say that Hitler didn't want to fight britain is incorrect he needed to take out Britain and the Empire they were too much of a threat to his plans for Europe. Sorry my working class family fought to stop fascism Ask anyone from the Channel Islands if the Germans treated them any better because they were British.
scousermoe 2 years ago 2
i too am working class. i've had members of my family fight in every war & conflict since 1900,including the small sideshows. i also served with 6 yrs in the forces so don't think i'm against the militery. what i'm against is the pointless waste of service personel in wars that arn nesscery & that in the long run change nothing. who is one of the major players in the EU.... germany, who always sides with them to get their own way....france, who always suffers the UK. i can go on if you want!!!
w1h2i3t4h5a6m7 2 years ago
w1h. Don't make me laugh. France always side with the UK? I don't think so. Have you forgotten that the English murdered Joan of Arc?
swanningaround 2 years ago
she was a terrorist & got what she deserved & i believe we fucked up Napoleon's plans as well!. the french & Germans have always wanted control over England, but have never been able to do it militarily. now our leaders just sign our power over to them, & now with the discovery of large oil deposits in the Falklands i suppose we'll hand sovereignty over to the argies...making the deaths of 253 service personnel in 1982 another waste of life for political means.
w1h2i3t4h5a6m7 2 years ago
At least they died of suffocation, not burning.
swanningaround 2 years ago
i'll admit in the past the British methods were sometimes brutal, but i think your allegation of bulldozing iraqis is rubbish.right through history all invading forces have used brutal methods to suppress natives, it's not something i condone but it happened. i don't understand why the British are expected to apologise just because we had the last great empire the world has seen & in the process of building that empire brought industrial progress to alot of the world.
w1h2i3t4h5a6m7 2 years ago
The use of bullozers to liquidate prisoners was usual.
swanningaround 2 years ago
Utter bollocks. The Patriot is the biggest load of anti-British propaganda to be produced since the fall of the Third Reich. Most serious AMERICAN historians agree.
As for bulldozing Iraqis, again, total bollocks. Funny how in Basra we Brits were going for the hearts and minds approach while the US was busy stripping and torturing prisoners in Abu Ghraib and illegally detaining them at Guantanamo
Qorlan 2 years ago 5
The Patriot is appalling anti-British propaganda. Just take the depiction of the treatment of black slaves. The British championed (and indeed enforced) the abolition of slavery and yet this reality is twisted beyond belief in The Patriot. Just one of countless crocks of nonsense spouted in this film.
evo5dave 2 years ago 4
@w1h2i3t4h5a6m7 are you saying we only fought against the threat of invasion ,our way of life and the downfall of europe because we wanted to kick the start the economy interesting angle but total bollocks !
79danhill 1 year ago
@79danhill open your mind & think about what i'm saying, the germans didn't want another long war. there was assination attempts on hitler, hess flew to scotland to try and organise a peaceful end to hostilities. we could of stayed out of the war & let the reich tear itself apart. we went to war because we needed to get the country's economy moving again.
w1h2i3t4h5a6m7 1 year ago
@w1h2i3t4h5a6m7 Actually we went to war simply because the Reich attacked Poland, with whom we had a treaty. If they had not, we might well have been content to have left Germany alone, as a buffer against Bolshevism.
CinnAlla 1 year ago
@CinnAlla British foreign policy towards Europe has always been the maintenance of the balance of power. Britain was there to maintain that balance throughout the late 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Prussia (aka Germany) overstepped her mark once and was not checked which resulted in the occupation of Paris in 1871. The buggers tried it again twice and were checked twice.

One of hitlers greatest mistakes was to move on to bombing london rather than to sticking with the airfields...
thats what you get for trying to get revenge for the bombing of berlin!
Jams636 2 years ago 4
Greater than many people realise. Hitler never really took Britain seriously after Dunkirk, and considered the failure to win the Battle of Britain as nothing more than annoying distraction. If only he realised that had he invaded Britain, not only would he have eliminated another enemy but would have also prevented D-Day from ever being possible; freeing up units to be used on the Eastern Front.
David291 2 years ago 2
We'll Hitler was hoping to smash British moral, not invade. Invasion was nearly impossible. The RAF could just be moved outside of German range and the Royal Navy would have smashed any invasion force. There were to many well armed and dug in Canadian infantry and armoured units In Britian at the time for Paratroopers. And finally the Germans had zero experience in amphibious assaults. Invasion was nearly impossible and Hitler knew that
javakris 2 years ago 2
Hitler only aimed to destroy the British moral after it became clear to him that the RAF could not be destroyed. Operation Sealion was already planned out and ready; all that was required was for the RAF to be destroyed so that the Luftwaffe could prevent the RN from intevening.
Also, Britain had very little heavy weapons and vehicles as they had been left behind after Dunkirk and Germany had some amphibious experience from when they invaded Norway.
David291 2 years ago
but rember he was a moron he attacked russia when he alredy had wars to fight
chazychap 2 years ago
David291 2 years ago 3
@David291
33vortex 1 year ago
@David291 if Hitler won the Battle of Britain there would be no world to live on as Nuclear weapons would of done the rest.

England always prevails, whether it is true or not. Nearly all the main characters in the Battle were not English, by the way. For example, Dowding was Scottish, but played by Olivier with a phoney English accent. Also Park was played by Trevor Howard, again with a phoney English accent.
