This is a performance to really listen to, and hear the writing and texture. It avoids many of the traps that result in hash, percussive playing that merely creates a wall of sound. Truly energized and eloquent.
Trop rapide, cela en devient ridicule et affreux. Prokofiev aurait détesté. Il jouait lui-même sa Toccata à l'allure "allegro", non pas "prestissimo".
Who cares about who plays it faster or who plays it more powerfully and accented. Hardly anyone adheres to the specific markings written in the score except maybe Prokofiev himself. First of all, the piece only slows down twice: once before the 2nd section and again before the coda. There is no pause or ritard right before the ascending thirds at the lowest register of the piano--it's supposed to be perpetual motion. Lastly, there is a pedal marking immediately after the G# minor octaves.
I think what makes people think this version is the best interpretation of all is mostly because of the soundstage and the expensiveness of the piano. Of course, Claire does use more pedal than other players, but I like that step of direction.
Did anyone realize she is participating in the biggest piano competition in the world this year? It will be very exciting, I'm sure she'll at least go to the semi finals where I can see her play a Mozart concerto.
@katchum Yes, I just listened to her performance in the semi-finals (still available on the website of the Queen Elisabeth Competition) and it was a pretty impressive recital - not only technically but also musically...I am sure she will finish in the top five.
Anyone ever listened to Prokofiev play? If you had you would know this is a mannered and "bangy" version. Sorry. She has facility but is a victim of the contemporary idea of piano playing.
I would never compare this interpretation with Argerichs. I think, both of them have their own qualities. Claire is fantastic with her e'lan and the clear rhythmical accents. That sounds for me a little bit like AC/DC in a good sense.
Argerich playings is slower and i can hear better all the phrases, all the nuances and coherence. Sometimes she suggests for me, that in this piece there are two pianists, who fight each other.
Claire Huangci completely outclasses the mighty Martha Argerich in terms of two handed power. Especially her left hand, which provides the essential beat which gives all Prokofiev's motor-rhythm piano pieces their hypnotic appeal. For a fairly frail girl a remarkable feat of endurance too.. I wish one could have seen more of her apparent collapse (from relief) at the decisive conclusion - to receive what one imagines was wild applause.
Thanks for reposting this - I can't imagine why Youtube took it down, other than the fact that this performance outmatches Martha Argerich's by miles, as regards excitement, stamina, and pure speed - and this one is a live performance!
very superb performance! i dare valentina, evgeny kissin, lang lang, yundi li and other great concert pianists out there to play this piece too, it would be my (probably "our") pleasure to hear this from u guys! this performance of huangci's is very very jawdropping, more terrifying than a horror movie! prokofiev would be very thrilled if he is just alive today..tsk tsk..

Has anyone seen Tamara Beraia's rendition of this toccata? It's faster and clearer... superior to Claire's performance, in my opinion...
TheRaff1975 2 years ago
Very slightly faster, yes, if you actually time it.. but Claire's version just sounds faster to me. I like it more.
sodoomia 2 years ago 3
@sodoomia
I like claire's toccata much more, too.
It is more powerful and has sex.
Maybe it's a little bit her thing what she's doing there.
Beraia's interpretation is charming like an etude from czerny.
