Always puts a smile on my face when I think how old these guys were when they made this magic,19 to 20 when Trespass came out and 23 to 24 when they recorded The Lamb. AMAZING!!
this era of genesis put the ROCK in progrock! name another band where the front man was as fearless/BADASS as peter ( okay, robert plant & yes, i consider LZ to be the apotheosis of progrock, sue me ) & then you have tony/steve/mike/phil who could go from pindrop hearing softness, volumewise to megalith metal chordage & wrap it up with a wink to bach/beethoven/mozart and then go back the pub to have a few pints...
The Hogweed has come to my town too in Ontario. Its in all the papers. Someone is throwing seeds all over the outskirts of the city and its spreading all over. You CANT outrun it!
amazing music - no one does this stuff anymore - now its just accountants measuring chord sequences in units of profit. A sad end to the music 'industry' as it eats itself - much like the giant hogweed in fact!

I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but this is quite a well researched song. The Herrachlia-manti-gaziani is a hogweed first discovered in along the river banks and canals in Russia.
Many people who have brushed up against it with exposed skin, and received a very nasty sting, equal to the common wasp.
This isn't just a song, it's a dramatised story of it's travel to our shores by the 19th Century Victorian explorers. Our warmer temps, it spread like wildfire. Brilliant!
All homo-erotic aspersions accepted here; but dyano what: he was pretending to be the hogweed (and raising the lust of collins at the same time?). Tell me, would you be turned on by a gyrating androgen?? I have to smirk each time l hear this song at local authority poisoning units who feign fear and feel hatred each time the weed shows its grand self.
great song! prog is the key to life my friends:) it is such a good sond that peter's androgenie is not notice:) there is nothing wrong with that but not everyone can do it without looking stupid:) and did you like the transatlantic version of this song?
@euphrosyne1 You cannot outrun the Hogweed. Eventually, we will be taken over — ‘conquered’, if you will — by this master race of giant plants. It’s difficult to tell from this vantage point whether they will consume the captive earth men or merely enslave them. One thing is for certain, there is no stopping them; the plants will soon be here. And I, for one, welcome our new Hogweed overlords.
For all the gabriel vs collins crap that you see on every genesis youtube clip's comments, I really like the warm looks peter gabriel obviously gives phil collins whilst he's singing. Bands have tight little friendships in them and that's one right there.
This song perfectly encapsulates the feeling of tackling evil vegetation. That is my job & although I have never encountered Giant Hogweed there is a similar plant with the photoreactive poison Peter describes so accurately. I'd be surprised if these guys didn't have some sort of conservation background.

The best musicians in the business. As an American I regret to say that only the British could make such integral, aesthetic music. They are better educated in the arts than Americans. Banks/Rutherford could most certainly be called contemporary classical composers, though that sounds oxymoronic. The videos from this session are of superior quality quality for their time. We are very fortunate to be able to watch them whenever we want.
@MusicStudioTV Ya know, there really DOES seem to be something true about your observation re: the Brits and the integrity of the music. It's almost uncanny how so many UK bands produce music with such outstanding quality of composition. Everything from Genesis to Muse, to the Clash and the Damned. I shake my head in wonder and appreciation! Awesome stuff on the video, too. Makes me think of Dr. Who: "The Seeds of Doom" and the Krynoid!
it is an electric piano, but he and many others (expecially english) keyboarder were using sometimes to play it with a fuzz or distorsion pedal. so it sounded like a synth or even an electric guitar.
So true! Banks is playing some great stuff though Steve's work insane at the beginning and at 3:18 though to 4:17 and on and on. Hackett is a beast. They are all great players but his work is so interesting.
you guys are so right ! these were the best days of genesis, creativity wise. brilliant , brilliant ! this stuff rivals the best composers of all times
Agreed - all of them geniuses. But somewhat underrated in these comments is the tall guy in the orange T-shirt. NOBODY played the bass like that up to that time. Rutherford to me is THE star in this video. - By the way Transatlantic did an incredible cover of this song on their latest album!

what does banks play that opening riff on because it looks like an electric piano but sounds like a mono synth
pinkfloydrule27 2 years ago
It's called a Mellotron. Alot of early 70's prog acts used Mellotrons, like Yes, Emerson Lake and Palmer, etc.

the mellotron is a white upright piano shaped keyboard im talking about the small keyboard he has on top of his hammond

Hmmm... no, no my friend. Emerson never did it! He refused to use a Mellotron because he felt that they make classical musicians lost their jobs!
You might say King Crimson instead... :-)

Ahh yes, my mistake.

it is an electric piano, but he and many others (expecially english) keyboarder were using sometimes to play it with a fuzz or distorsion pedal. so it sounded like a synth or even an electric guitar.

Man, Hacketts inventing modern guitar playing and the cameras focused on freakin Banks. What a rip off. Great Video anyways

So true! Banks is playing some great stuff though Steve's work insane at the beginning and at 3:18 though to 4:17 and on and on. Hackett is a beast. They are all great players but his work is so interesting.

It's such a shame so few no this group as they were up to Lamb. They were extraordinary in their innovation and quality.

Agreed - all of them geniuses. But somewhat underrated in these comments is the tall guy in the orange T-shirt. NOBODY played the bass like that up to that time. Rutherford to me is THE star in this video. - By the way Transatlantic did an incredible cover of this song on their latest album!
