Everyone loves Japan so much. I was drilled that these people are evil cause a bunch of bored ones crushed my grandfather's feet with a hammer when he was a war prisoner. (That's how they woke him up from sleeping one day)
Yeah, the imperial Japanese were a whole different situation. They were pretty damn brutal during the war, like the Germans and the Russians. Humane treatment of prisoners has an interesting historic development. Even now the concept isn't a given for a lot of people in the world.
I wouldn't let the past poison your present. Cruel things happen to people all the time. Would you hate every man because someone you knew was raped?
Hello , i wanted to ask something, i really wanna go to japan but i'm pretty scared. Like i'm not american or european but latin american and i've hard a lot of people saying they won't be nice to you!. I don't want to believe it because japan people seems to be really nice but you know i'm still scared. If i go there, will it be easy to me to have friends, or it will be difficult!?
@cutiesnsd It really depends on a lot of things. Generally speaking you will be welcomed. That said, it depends on where you go, why you go there (student?), and how old you are. In big cities, you won't be anything special. In small towns, you will be more interesting as a foreigner. If you go to teach English, you will be welcomed, if you are just a tourist with no connections, you will seen as someone passing through. If you are a student, you will make friends without a problem.
Were people still nice to you even though you were not from Japan? (I don't want to sound like an idiot, and I'm not trying to be stereotypical) but my mother is taking a business trip to japan and I might have to go to a middle school there. I'm a bit fluent in Japanese but I'm still learning. I'm 13, but would girls still be nice to me?
@lalala123able Yes. If you are a good person, people will be nice to you. They will probably be extra nice to you, in fact. But you will be expected to quickly learn how to act in Japanese culture. The schools are more strict than western schools. You will have to learn to be quiet and respectful but if you can, they will treat you as if you are really special.
Wish i had uniforms in my school, cuz atleast noone could make fun of you for what your wearing cuz they're wearing the same thing!Oh and loved that anime drawing <3
Hey, did you get permission from your Kocho-sensei to shoot this video? I kinda want to do a video like this but afraid it's going to cause problems -_-
@Blogginjapan Yeah, it is a tricky situation. I was told that I couldn't put up any pictures or video of the students where any of the student's faces are recognizable. In fact, I had a youtube for each of my schools but I had to take them all down. The problem is that students can be stalked from the videos. The students in these videos have graduated from high school at this point so I don't feel too bad. Also, I don't openly say where this is. I don't know.
I was wondering what % of ALT teachers in Japan are really serious teachers vs. what % are "Clowns" who came to Japan because they couldn't find a job back in their native country? Sorry to ask this kind of bold question but I've encountered way tooooo many Clowns in my country who are teaching the English language.
Of course, I understand that ALT are not the typical Clowns you encounter at NOVA or GEOS or other mcEnglish schools.
@novajoke I think the biggest problem is not that ALTs are bad people as much as they are often just big children. By that, I mean that a lot are hired right after University without ever having worked or having any responsibility. They think it is just "the party continued." The best ALTs I have met in my five years were the ones that were a bit older. Remember that ALTs fall into two groups, JET and all the rest. JET's interview process. Still, a high % of clowns are around Japan for sure.
I don't mind people who enjoys teaching the English language as well as respecting Japanese cultures, customs, manners, etc. etc. instead of "Clowns" who like to play race card game/I'm a victim because I'm a Gaijin when in fact it's their own fault for not learning the Japanese language.
woah, they totally exaggerate high school uniforms in animes, making them look all cute and stuff, hahaha!! not that i was expecting the uniforms to look like that
@TinaTiny24 Just for the record, this is a JUNIOR high school. High school uniforms are a bit more "cute and stuff." That said, each high school has a different uniform and some are more conservative than others, depending on the academic level of the school and it's location in Japan.
aedfuhqeuoifhqeiurfhwqueiofhqweiuh qwehifquowehf OMG i spoke japanese!!!!! Lol jk XP The high school life in japan looks fun but little do we know that there is a japanese high school student somewhere watching "Life in an American high school".....
I wonder why they all gave teh peace sign. XD In texas it's nothing but people giving you weird looks if your filming them or smiling nervously then walking away.
@april76301 Sorry. jannimorandy is a racist Japanese person who doesn't like foreign people in Japan. His comment reads, "Without the ability to speak Japanese, how do you teach English. You idiot." I replied to him in Japanese (rather sarcastically). In short I said that I am an English teacher because I am fluent in English (not Japanese) and that Einstein wasn't a gym teacher. In short, you teach what you know. It isn't like I was there to teach Japanese.
@heatslap Well, any Japanese--even a kid-- who reads the comments of jannimorandy can tell at a glance that he/she is not a real Japanese because these words are so unnatural and making terrible mistakes both in syntax and vocabulary. I wonder why jannimorandy pretends to be a Japanese expressing those vulgar, racist and even incomplete Japanese phrases.
@jannimorandy 日本で日本人の英語教師も英語を喋れないことが多いだよ。君はALTの意味と知っている?文句があれば日本政府にやる。 Do you know many Japanese native English teachers in Japan can't communicate orally in English? Do you understand the meaning of ALT? If you have complaints, talk to your own government (obviously the one who created this program).
I am an American and I want to teach in Japan as a English teacher. Preferably in Kyoto. What would you recommend for me to do to make the transition to a Japanese life style? And what would you recommend for me to prepare to go there, I still haven't gotten a teaching degree yet, but I will be working on it soon.
@TwilightKitsune89 You need a college degree. Kyoto isn't such an easy place to teach as everyone and their mother wants to go there. You don't need a teaching degree but if you really want to make life in Japan your future, get a ESL or a TEFL degree. Research into the "JET programme". Also, you can try "interac" as it gives you more of a chance to pick where you go (but less money, benefits, support). Lastly, it isn't necessary but it's a good idea to study some Japanese.
I have been here for 5 years and French is basically only used as borrowed words (as you said, usually for food). Every Japanese person studies English for years and years during school but they don't use it to communicate between themselves and French is thousands of times less popular here as a language of study. I have heard of one girl who studied French in my 5 years. That said, I live in the countryside so maybe it would be more popular in cities.
Oh geez, that looks like fun! :D Lol. I've always wanted to tie mops to my feet and slide around a floor that needed washing. Sounds fun to me. :D That looks like another version of that. :D
He teaches English to them, from what I've read on his other video and when we have our Japanese kids come to our school, they aren't really anywhere and they are viewing the school to much for us to say hi, plus most don't know Japanese. Even if many of us have Japanese backgrounds.
I would normally simply erase this ill-informed, hate-spewing, racist garbage but I will keep it up as an example of just how idiotic and pathetic humans can be. So, everyone, please take this pitiful chump as an example of how NOT to think.
If you look different you can expect a unique treatment one way or another. It's normal that you are viewed as exceptional if they don't see your color type often, weather you are white or black.
But what Heatslap said below is most likely what you can expect (third comment of his downwards).
And last but not least, it doesn't need to mean that the general public is straight forward racist ...but just not familiar how to deal with different skin based people.
I'm a white female visiting Japan this coming Summer.. so should I beware of flying insults because I'm American?..and if anything else White with blond hair? lol.
i always wanted to live in a small town in japan and go to a school like this, cause everyone looks so happy, not like in america theres drug addicts and bullies everywhere im my highschool. but most asians have parents that disipline them. :( too bad i can only be young once, maybe i can raise my children in japan thatll be nice. (im asian ill fit right in)
Yeah, that is true. You are both right. I have lived in Japan for 5 years now. White foreigners are the "preferred" foreigner (unless you are Russian since there is a bit of a Russian bias in some places). African Americans are also well treated but they will receive a fair amount of racism here simply because people don't know what is right or wrong to say to them (due to little experience). Racism through ignorance rather than ill-will. But we are all foreign to them, for better or for worse.
Actually, not exactly, No matter if you are American (Born in North America, america is a continent) or Chinese or else, if you are not japanese, you are foreigner. Japanese people are racists at some point, Quote from me, I have been there many times visiting my wife parents (Wife is japanese) and suffered acts of racism every now and then. (But mostly on big cities like Tokyo, wife parents live in a small town in Yonago, no problems there)
The title is misleading. I was expecting something informative about an ALT's experience... It REALLY should have been titled "Students do silly things for an ALT holding a camera for 2.5 minutes."

(im asian ill fit right in)

So both of are information is correct, it just depends where you go.
ChainLocked 2 years ago
Yeah, that is true. You are both right. I have lived in Japan for 5 years now. White foreigners are the "preferred" foreigner (unless you are Russian since there is a bit of a Russian bias in some places). African Americans are also well treated but they will receive a fair amount of racism here simply because people don't know what is right or wrong to say to them (due to little experience). Racism through ignorance rather than ill-will. But we are all foreign to them, for better or for worse.

japanese high school looks like to much fun! what are those little sliding doors that they're pushing open with their feet, like at 0:05?
crocsareplasticshoes 2 years ago
The walls have little windows down low and up high so the school can get a good cross-breeze in summer. Works wonderfully.
heatslap 2 years ago
I agree with you on that, American schools SUCK! No offense to my country, but I would like to transfer to Japan for college.

and be bullied just because you are not japanese.
sodobean 2 years ago
Actually no, if you are a white/black American the Japanese treat you REAL well. Quote from people I know who have been to Japan.
ChainLocked 2 years ago
Actually, not exactly, No matter if you are American (Born in North America, america is a continent) or Chinese or else, if you are not japanese, you are foreigner. Japanese people are racists at some point, Quote from me, I have been there many times visiting my wife parents (Wife is japanese) and suffered acts of racism every now and then. (But mostly on big cities like Tokyo, wife parents live in a small town in Yonago, no problems there)
