First of all I think they are not just "so-called" moderates. They ARE moderate. But there's the rub: being moderate means mostly that you just wish to be able to lead your life in peace as much as you wish others to be able to do the same. The moment you speak out against bigotry, you draw attention to yourself, and mostly NOT the sort of attention you'd want.
That is why it is very important that we show support to any moderate who is courageous enough to speak out.
But most importantly: I am very familiar with human beings. I love humanity, and that includes people of the Islamic persuasion. I will give everybody I meet the benefit of the doubt, even whilst accepting that, and preparing for the possibility that I could be disappointed. But that doesn't mean I should treat people a priori as if they are lying to me. Prove them to be liars, and the ball game changes. But I will judge every person as an individual, NOT as a "muslim".

I think i do understand. There are religious events such as christmas, marriage or funeral that can be beatiful and/or thouching hapening. And I'm not saying that you should accept such opinions either. You are perfectly entitled to counter them with your own. What you're NOT entitled to is to try and shut me up. You would NOT be entitled to respond to such opinions with violence, no matter how much they upset you. But you're quite entitled to disagree, and express that disagreement vocally and publicly.

For me to disagree with someone, he would first need to have an actual position on an issue. Defamation of a religion hinders positive social changes and is equivalent to a comedian making fun of Judaism during the Nazi era. Just like today with Islamophobia.

But if I then turn around and start shouting even worse obscenities back at the person who started it, how do you think that will change?

And just like any group of human beings that large, the overwhelming majority are decent, ordinary, peace loving people who just want to lead their own lives as they feel is appropriate. I have heard of Sufism, and I like what I hear. Thanks for commenting. It's really quite simple. There are about one billion Muslims in the world. And like in any group that big, the overwhelming majority are ordinary, decent, peace-loving people. And the more they speak out and we start hearing from those people in the Muslim community, the better.

Yeah, I know. But I always try and judge a believer by how they deal with their religious texts, rather than BY their religious texts. Sufis, for example, manage to be islamic and yet totally pacifistic. It's not up to me to worry about how they manage to do that. I'm just happy they did, and I can only hope that many Muslims will follow their example.

@cr4yv3n My position on that has changed a good deal. Firstly, I realised that muslims DO speak out against extremism. It just doesn't tend to make headline news. But if you go looking for it you can find plenty of examples of muslims speaking out.
That aside, the big difference here is that in my video I am asking people to state their opposition to violence, and I am hoping to get a positive response. d's comment doesn't even allow for that possibility.

First of all I think they are not just "so-called" moderates. They ARE moderate. But there's the rub: being moderate means mostly that you just wish to be able to lead your life in peace as much as you wish others to be able to do the same. The moment you speak out against bigotry, you draw attention to yourself, and mostly NOT the sort of attention you'd want.
That is why it is very important that we show support to any moderate who is courageous enough to speak out.

I will give everybody I meet the benefit of the doubt, even whilst accepting that, and preparing for the possibility that I could be disappointed. For me to disagree with someone, he would first need to have an actual position on an issue. Defamation of a religion hinders positive social changes and is equivalent to a comedian making fun of Judaism during the Nazi era. Just like today with Islamophobia.

And just like any group of human beings that large, the overwhelming majority are decent, ordinary, peace loving people who just want to lead their own lives as they feel is appropriate. I have heard of Sufism, and I like what I hear. Thanks for commenting. It's really quite simple. There are about one billion Muslims in the world. And like in any group that big, the overwhelming majority are ordinary, decent, peace-loving people. Yeah, I know. But I always try and judge a believer by how they deal with their religious texts, rather than BY their religious texts. Sufis, for example, manage to be islamic and yet totally pacifistic. It's not up to me to worry about how they manage to do that.
