It's clear that the treaty ended and the Messenger attacked them. If you read all of the verses before 9:5 you'll see that the Muslims entered into a treaty between them and the polytheists, and that when it expires Allah and the Messenger would destroy the Murshrikoon... which is what happened.

All of the Sirah books, the Book of Conquests, Bidayah wal Nihiyah, Sirat ibn Hisham, Tabaqat ibn Saad etc. has no mention of this, they describe the Prophet clearly. The idea that the Quraish physically threatened the Prophet is a Bid'ah. In truth, the Prophet was threatened mentally, psychologically, and so was the community in the same way. It was never physically that the Prophet was attacked.

If that is the case, why have Muslims since then thought it meant prayer. If you are right then there is a big ERROR in the Ummah of Islam that needs to be corrected.
