  • Cute!

  • I went to New Zealand in 2009 and after i watched TVNZ 6 (which has now been replaced by TVNZ U) and i watched the goodnight kiwi in the dark when it signed off for the night. I was the only one up lol.

  • i left nz in 76 so i missed out on this.now im makin up for lost time.weird tho it feels like ive seen it somewhere before.wonderful more innocent times eh.irie blue.

  • @olive897 - If your father made the cartoon, then I wish to know what happened in the original 1975 version. NOT the 1976 South Pacific version.

  • @strydcanu - No, I wish there was.

  • He was special :-)

  • Is the Goodnight Kiwi related to Piwi The Kiwi? Are they brothers? To find out, watch WORLD WONDER FROM DOWN UNDER – Video

WARNING: Some of the language used is NOT politically correct. May offend Namby Pambies, Hoity Toities and other weak-minded bastards!

  • This is just too ctute.

  • Yip NZ Tv goes 24/7 and has for years now, even tho during the middle of the night and early morning it is full of Stupid American infomercials selling crap, Question is, Is anyone that gullible to buy that crap??

  • chur chur bro azz

  • I recognise the Maori song Hine e Hine. I'm Aussie and have been across the ditch twice. NZ is a lovely country. This add is cute, too. I guess NZ tv runs all night now, like it does here in Oz.

  • I grew up with this. Wish TVNZ would re-screen it. Remember the xmas eve ones, I do....vaguely.

    Thanks for this, it's cool.

  • @eirinn2 TVNZ6 and 7 do at shutdown, as far as I know

  • Oh my gosh that's sooooooo cute :D ^_^

  • daamn, what memories this brings back!!!

  • memories man!!! always got sad when this came on. good to see again thx

  • OMG this brings back memories! I was scared of this when I was little! Not the cartoon...... the music! I ended up taping this clip so I could get used it and not get scared!

  • @happik

Yeah, that is pretty creepy. Creepier now than it was when I was younger!

  • @happik why were you scared of the music? It's a Maori lullaby it's supposed to put you to sleep!

  • @novarone72 it would've been nice if the music was played without that organ. That used to creep me out but not now!

  • @happik yea true it is when the lights go off and all you see are those big eyes lol I liked it but didn't cos it meant I had to go to bed.....aaaah those were the days, things like putting the milk bottle out, great memories.

  • Still used at tvnz6 on freeview

  • WHO MADE THIS COOL CARTOON?

  • This used to scare me as a kid too. I think it's the song. It's actually kind of eerie and somber.

  • You can get a charm bracelet with the kiwi and cat and TV on it. Love the old glass milk bottle with the money stuck in it.

  • It used to scare the crap out of me too.

  • Awesome. We Brits never had anything as cool as that. Just the National Anthem and a boring test-card.

  • i get all teary and fuzzy every time i see this.. I love TVNZ..

  • There was a difference between the versions shown on ONE and TV2.

On ONE the cat stayed awake, while on TV2 the cat went to sleep.

  • Ha ha! This is great! What did WE get in the UK at the end of transmissions? A blank screen accompanied by an irritating whistling noise!!

  • i would love it if they would release these "commercials" on a dvd. :) totally awesome! love the goodnight kiwi... one very fond memory.

  • i soooo remember this man the times i would pretend to be asleep would always wait for kiwi to come on.

  • I remember turning this up at full boar when I was a kid. The whole family came in and listened to it. Then the static came on and the whole neighborhood was up!

    Great memories!!!

  • Sweet sweet nostalgia! <3

  • What's with the braille tat in the end? (?)

  • I remember staying at my grandmothers in the school holidays and being able to stay up until TV finished... good old TV Kiwi. Only other time you saw it was when tv networks were having problems and the Kiwi put a broom through a monitor.

  • tis bed time

  • You may not believe me but my father was the one who invented and drew this. :)

  • For some reason this use to scare the shit out me when I was a kid,Probably because I use to watch Sunday horrors before it..Lol,Does anyone have the Sunday horrors intro..Dat was scary as phukk,Love ta see that again..

  • @SpunkOnYoMom yeah this used to freak me out too and so did 'radio with pictures'

  • Back in the day there were two versions of this - at the end one had the cat sitting up and the other had him curling up and laying down. Bets were made as to which version was being shown - how sad is that?

  • I used to try and turn the TV off or go to sleep b4 the end of this short, co's I was scared of the static noise (humm)and test pattern that played after it. Back when WWF Superstars of Wrestling used to be the last show on TV for the night.

  • This is so cool

  • i know i miss it too!

  • it looks pretty cold, sleeping in that satellite all the way up there... it is pretty much a metal bowl. :(

  • what happens after the short ends

  • @mat2000100 it says "underwater" in braille (on some dude's arm?) very meaningful

  • SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO SAD THEY STOPPED IT! Makes me really angry about people who go to bed to late lol! I love good night kiwi! SO SWEET LOL!

  • The cat goes up in the lift first. If you watch it comes down before Kiwi gets in it :)

  • Cute little sucker

  • does anyone know if the animator of this clip was a guy called sam harvey from new zealand. I would be grateful if anyone could give me some info.

  • How does the cat get in the satalite?

When my mum and dad lived i new zealand they taped this and sent it back to england for the rest of the family, wish it was still on tv now.

  • the cat runs ahead ove him up the stairs, catches the elevator, then sends it down as a good cat does...

  • goodnight kiwi is still on tv on tvnz 6 at midnight in new zealand

only on freeview and sky tv

    It's amazing watching this.

  • I was always sad when this came on because I knew it was time for bed lol.

  • lol so did i

  • Every now and again they would play a special broadcast of this early in the night just so younger kids could see it without having to stay up till midnight.

  • Cheryl: Do you...do you remember Goodnight Kiwi?

    Aurora: Yeah.

Cheryl: Well Van used to think that the kiwi and the cat lived in the TV, he used to leave cat biscuits out for them. And one time we went away and they took them off the telly and Van thought they'd died because he hadn't been around to feed them. He cried for weeks.

  • this music is sad...and scary

  • i love this song

  • I loved to hate this ad LOL when we were kids we knew it was bedtime when we saw this kiwi come on the tele so sometimes we looked forward to seeing it cos it was such a cool ad but then on the other hand we would see it come on and sometimes we didnt want to go to bed so we flicked it off b4 mum and dad saw it cos they knew assoon as it came on theyd send us to bed :(

If you not a Kiwi, you woodn't understand!

  • weneva this used to come on at the end of the night my siblings and i used to race to the tv and turn it off before the ad finished cos it used to give us the creeps for some reason and then it would be dark, quiet and spooky.. and then in the morning wait for the national anthem, gee those were the days aye....
