Great Alex Garland book, Awesome movie. Pseudomax states it's about marijuana which touches on the vibe I got out of it. It is a loss of innocense. A stepping into a new paradigm. I experienced the movie on a psychotropic drug induced trip. It felt as though it mirrored my life at the time and almost as if I was experiencing the action right there with the characters. Like I was 'inside' the movie. I had a real life Francoise and Etienne watching with me. Very special unique time.

wow that was amazing, i just got back from thailand, were i was reading the book "the beach" in Koh tao, from were you can see this group of islands were the story is (but it is filmed on a diferent island called "phi phi lee" and you can easely get there by longboat if you are on koh phiphi) But the bay you see in the film is not closed in real life but is an open bay.)
p.s most of the island is restored after the tsunamie but its verry touristy!
Roeter.... Koh Tao is in The Gulf of Thailand east side of Thai.... Koh Phi Phi is in the Andaman west side of Thai two different oceans with the mainland seperating them,you cant see Phi Phi from Koh Tao maybe from Phan nang after a full moon party hahahaha
no i know, as i was saying i just got back from thailand. but the guy that wrote the book was talking about a group of islands near koh tao (if your standing on the south side of thailand and you have good weather, you can see them.) but the film is not shot at this location (dont ask me why) but look it up at the internet and find out, and if you really know the film you would know they go for rice run to phangan, and you cant see that from phi phi.(or maybe after a full moon party)

There actually is a group of Westerners living like this on an island close to where this was filmed. I stayed with them for over four months leaving in late August 07' as I had to have my appendix removed. They grow their own vegetables, fish and are self sufficent. The living quaters and surrounding nature are very accurate in this movie to the actual real place. I plan to go back there in June of next year. It's not a well known place as they really are quite secretive about it's location.

Phi Phi Don (The island right next to the island in this movie) was originally like that. About 15 years ago there was nothing on Phi Phi Don but a few huts, a few natives, and a few tourists, completely self sufficient. It wasnt a secret, but very few people went there compared to now and Im sure the other side of the island was even more empty and similar to "The Beach" since its still kind of empty now.
There were still a lot of tourist,but since the "Beach" everyone and his dog has flocked to Phi Phi Islands.But it still hasn't quiet got over the devestation of Tsunami unlike Phuket : (
You should see It. I will buy the DVD becuse even the menu is beautiful. In the meantime I RECOMMEND that you get the Soundtrack firtst. I have not known yet a person tha doesn't love it. Trust me.
I kind of liked the supply scene, where everyone goes up to Richard and asks him for stuff. It's ironic that they consider themselves self-sufficient, but then they have to go back to civilization for all these things. How are they any different from the other tourists who travel all the way to Thailand and end up in a theater watching "Apocalypse Now" in one of the earlier scenes?
Well, the community on the island looks nicer compared to the drunken tourists we see on the mainland, but didn't Richard make this whole big speech at the beginning of how typical it is to want to travel to an exotic place, that yet has all the comforts of home? If it had been necessities, I could have understood, but one girl was asking for makeup remover and some guy wanted a newspaper...they could have stayed on the mainland and had that 24/7.
I think if they asked for electricity and a TV and a laptop and a microwave/stove/dishwasher/refrigerator/air conditioner... you'd have a point. They are still living completely different lives than the tourists watching apocalypse now or you or I. Makeup remover and newspaper and tampons are not all that separate the two...

leonardo dicaprio is truly an amazing actor, just because people were getting tired of titanic they all hated him in this but, if we hadn't know who he was we would have loved it
danny boyle (the director) shouldnt have sold out and got di caprio (a big star) as the lead role, he should have used a unknown actor, kept it low budget. but that the irony, if it was low budget and he didnt use a big star to pull in the crowds woldnt have had the chance to film it in the location i guess.
the film was good but had two funemental flaws.
The lead role should have been english not american and he shouldnt have 'gone all the way' with the girl ;)
I think it's a great movie, but the original book of Alex Garland is so extremely much better . Someone may say it's a "must-see movie" I think the book is so much better that it is a "must-read book".

Well said cuttea1. No offence lukkreung, but you, me old wave slapper, are the very ilk that we try to disuade from coming to the island. Why? Well it's because you are sure to spill the beans of the location to your diving dude buddies and soon you or some of the folk that got to know of the location from a source originating from you would want to open a dive store, then a bar, then a restaurant etc. I'm not being smart, it's the truth, come on, you know it. hotjam, lukkreung asked me "pray tell me the location" thus prompting me to reply in the manner in which I did. I also explained as to why I could not divulge the location to him. His comments show that he was taunting me to prove him wrong and so reveal the location. I strongly suspect that this is your motive as well. I'm afraid to inform you that I shall take the whereabouts of this particular beauty to my grave which will be in the waters surrounding the secret island.

There is real places like that. Theres over 300 islands in Thailand. Ive been to that island and its packed with people, but Ive found many places like that. As far as weed, there is no worries in Thailand unless you are like a trafficker. Ive walked along the beach smoking many times. Nobody cares

I don't think I ever said they couldn't have the luxuries. I just said they weren't nearly as different from the other tourists as they convinced themselves. And I think in a subtle way, the director was trying to make that point.
For the record, yes, I went to college. No I didn't start out looking for a debate, just wanted to see if anyone interpreted the scene the same way. So far the answer's no. Here's an idea for you: chill. Take a deep breath. You'll feel much better.

There actually is a group of Westerners living like this on an island close to where this was filmed. I stayed with them for over four months leaving in late August 07' as I had to have my appendix removed. They grow their own vegetables, fish and are self sufficent. The living quaters and surrounding nature are very accurate in this movie to the actual real place. I plan to go back there in June of next year. It's not a well known place as they really are quite secretive about it's location.

Phi Phi Don (The island right next to the island in this movie) was originally like that. About 15 years ago there was nothing on Phi Phi Don but a few huts, a few natives, and a few tourists, completely self sufficient. It wasnt a secret, but very few people went there compared to now and Im sure the other side of the island was even more empty and similar to "The Beach" since its still kind of empty now.

You should see It. I will buy the DVD becuse even the menu is beautiful. In the meantime I RECOMMEND that you get the Soundtrack firtst. I have not known yet a person tha doesn't love it. Trust me.

I kind of liked the supply scene, where everyone goes up to Richard and asks him for stuff. It's ironic that they consider themselves self-sufficient, but then they have to go back to civilization for all these things. How are they any different from the other tourists who travel all the way to Thailand and end up in a theater watching "Apocalypse Now" in one of the earlier scenes?

Well, the community on the island looks nicer compared to the drunken tourists we see on the mainland, but didn't Richard make this whole big speech at the beginning of how typical it is to want to travel to an exotic place, that yet has all the comforts of home? If it had been necessities, I could have understood, but one girl was asking for makeup remover and some guy wanted a newspaper...they could have stayed on the mainland and had that 24/7.

I think if they asked for electricity and a TV and a laptop and a microwave/stove/dishwasher/refrigerator/air conditioner... you'd have a point. They are still living completely different lives than the tourists watching apocalypse now or you or I. Makeup remover and newspaper and tampons are not all that separate the two...

danny boyle (the director) shouldnt have sold out and got di caprio (a big star) as the lead role, he should have used a unknown actor, kept it low budget. but that the irony, if it was low budget and he didnt use a big star to pull in the crowds woldnt have had the chance to film it in the location i guess.
the film was good but had two funemental flaws.
The lead role should have been english not american and he shouldnt have 'gone all the way' with the girl ;)
the soundtrack is great!

I think it's a great movie, but the original book of Alex Garland is so extremely much better . Someone may say it's a "must-see movie" I think the book is so much better that it is a "must-read book".
