i got 2 question's why do they have 2 units on a 3 car train?..are these cars heavyer then the bombadier ones?...nice shot of the f59ph's...i like those units...cool vid!!
The cab car looks somewhat similar to a P42 in design, but the P40/P42s are generally very attractive... these cars look like crap Euro railcars aka ugly! To this day, my favorite bilevel commuter rail cars are the Kawasaki cars that MARC uses.
Well a problem with cars like that is that it limits operation, I know DB uses cab cars like that in Germany too. Though they have an interesting gallery car look to them.
According to Hyundai Rotem web site, Hyundai will be building total of 137 cars for LA, 24 for Florida, 120 for Pensilvania, 75 for Boston, and 50 for Denver.
most of which will be built at the Philadelphia factory.
Hyundai Rotem is also bidding for High Speed Rail contracts in USA.
@simhopp Great for American industry (though profiting an international corporation)...I just wish their aesthetics were more sleek like Alstom, Bombardier, and Kawasaki and less cheap-car-from-Korea...
@simhopp Indeed, rollingstock manufacturers often built-to-suit, but they do often bring along their own design aesthetics. I also don't know of many orders where a specific design from the customer is requested outside of re-orders, like what the MBTA is currently requesting of Hyundai-Rotem for the new bilevels that will be identical to current stock.
Did Tri-Rail make the order with Metrolink or something? Their new cab car looks identical.
@Roboboy How is a foreign made rail car operating in America "Great for American industry"? You got me on that one. I don't see anything great about it.
@JetMechMA sorry, I was working on the assumption that the majority of the construction would be stateside, per Buy America regs in US Code 49 § 5323, but apparently only final assembly will be happening stateside. Apparently the order got less than $100m from the feds, so USC49 §5323 does not apply. I'm from the East Coast where transit orders are usually considerably larger and are usually governed by that provision.
@simhopp We may as well give America away to foreign interests. I assume that the Hyundai factory in PA is anti-union. ....which means low wages. Low wages can't sustain the US economy. The cuirrent republican economic depression proves that. They were successful in busting the unions. There are hardly any unionized workers any more.....and consequently the economy collapsed. That's republicanism.....anti-American. Yeah, lets jump up and down and cheer the foreign rail cars.
The Philadelphia Hyundai-Rotem plant is union now; workers are represented by the Transport Workers Union. But it took a court fight (which Rotem lost) to get them firmly in. Negotiations for the first contract are ongoing.
You're welcome. I hope the Silverliner V cars currently under construction and delivery for SEPTA can overcome their teething pains. I wonder how well the Metrolink cars have been performing so far....
The coaches look pretty nice, but that rat with wings (seagull) looks so much better than the cab car lol! Anyway, nice video! I really liked the station action!
Not the prettiest things in the world, but hopefully the safest things as well. But why does the last car look like a p42, that's what I wanna know lol.
They look like DMUs!

Toronto GO Trains are 10 or 12 cars long.

@Roboboy
well, you can't blame Hyundai for the exterior design.
It's not like Metrolink purchased stock Hyundai design, as they did with the previous
Canadian built metrolink cars.
If you look at all the Hyundai trains that were ever built, none of them looks anything
even close to these metrolink cars.
Hyundai probably built these cars according to Metrolink's design.
Hyundai can make any shape that the buyer demands, slick and lots
of curves if the buyer wants that.
