  • To all my brothers and sisters of another color, here is the best example of a music genre that might be called Smooth Jazz but if you have any history knowledge this song is part GOSPEL TOO! • Her vocals gives me chills. Very original and pure.

  • I feel like Lalah is really speaking to my 2011 through this song…

  • One of the greatest songs every written and sung.

  • Words can't adequately express what happens when Lalah and the music come together...it's more than magical. She sings so soulful and effortless. Truly awesome.

  • This is ecstasy set to music...

  • Is there anything better than this? i mean, really....Imagine sitting in the night air, sipping a nice red wine,,you will fall in love with whoever you are sitting next to!

  • @iralevifan Damn that sounds good, but I like vodka lol. I no some babies were made that night!!! Im not even a romance kinda dude but she makes me feel all kissy huggy come here babe. You feel me?

  • WOW!, The apple sure didn't fall from that tree. What a talent. Just like her dad. Who will always live in our hearts.

  • Donny's legend lives on! I hear his tone in hers...

  • I can listen to this all day!!

  • the five Justin Bieber's fans in the world did their job, so let's play music now and listen.... Love it !

  • What a lesson of class and taste

  • this is my new favorite song.... i mean just amazing.... i know some u bass players thought u could play.. take some of them strings off go back to 4! lol

  • she's no joke live! amazing voice and spirit. can't wait to see her live again.

    love u L!

  • This so cool! Don't know what planet home girl with the bad mouth is from, you don't $***! The Bass player is famous, played with the best of the best! look it up! And get some spelling lessons while you're at it!

  • THE 5 PEOPLE WHO CLICKED DISLIKE, CAN GO KICK ROCKS W/FLIP FLOPS! THIS IS REAL MUSIC. THE MUSICIANS R BADD AS EVER & THE INCOMPARABLE MS. LALAH HATHAWAY IS AWESOME! THE LYRICS R AS REAL AS EVER. I CAN DEFINITELY RELATE 2 THIS SONG. I CAN SAY I LOVED HIM & WAS THE BEST FRIEND I COULD POSSIBLY B TO HIM. I EVEN MADE SOME SACRIFICES, BUT HE USED MY KINDNESS JUST 2 GET WHAT HE WANTED OUT OF ME. HE USED ME. I CAN'T EVEN DESCRIBE THE PAIN.

  • The real blessing is that these musicians took great time and expense to develop their gifts and talents alike, and then they shared them with us, oh my that's what life's about!

  • An amazing song, great live performance with the incomparable Mr. Marcus Miller. Clearly the person making the negative comments about the musicians probably didn't get music appreciation in school. The beauty of music is that is fluid and transcends the boundaries of race and class. IHMO.

  • Lalah is amazing with whom ever she sings with. If you don't appreciate the art. That is the music. Keep your negative comments to yourself.

  • I wish she wouldn't waste time with crappy musician. She deserves to sing with Joe Sample and George Benson.

  • I cant stand fucking bass solo guitar it's crap sound makes me want to vomit.

Get rid of that white dude and that crappy bass guitarist.

  • @GigglingGirI Don't know what you're about, but the guy playing bass is the divine Marcus Miller. You might want to google his name and learn a bit more about music and musicians. Since you're from the States - how should you know?

  • I cant stand fucking base solo it's crap sound makes me want to vomit

  • omfg get red of that white fucking dude he has no soul and his guitar playing is so whiteishhhhhit ....

  • Jasmine dose have a earthy voice similar to laylahs BUT laylah is muchhhhhh more seasoned with out a doubt : O ) ... shes been singing since Layla was in pampers so she should be .

  • I rarely get into a conversation on who's better than who because its all subjective and everybody has an opinion ....as for this particual case I must say that my opinion is that Ms Hathaway is in a much higher league in comparison to mz jazimine sullivan...ms sullivan's lyrics are pretty much garbage ...no substance and to be frank I think Adina Howard brings more substance vocally and lyrically than jasmine sullivan

  • @slimbrotherluv I agree with you. Lalah & Adina have full bodied earthy voices that have an almost inexplicable quality when coupled with meaningful lyrics. Jazmine also has a similar voice and she has the potential to get to their level if she utilized better lyrical content.

  • Simly Beautiful

  • JAZMINE SULLIVAN WHO???? I LOVE YOU LALAH HOPE 2 WORK WIT U 1DAY

  • @SEXYQUPID WOW Jazmine Sullivan is diffrent age and genre..why hate..give them Both their props, J.S probably looks up to her too..lol

  • i am loving this .....

  • man her voice is amazing and it so great to hear it on any giving day!

  • Gorgeous song by Lalah, had to get the CD when I first heard it back in the day. Great bass solo by the one and only Mr. Marcus Miller.

  • awesome song...could have done without the bass solo, buy hey ego's are rampid in this industry

  • I can truely relate myself to this melody! It's sad by yet very true! I wanna dedicate this to my ex boyfriend aka my first love aka the cruelest man in the world. My message to him is definately this song.

  • My God, this young lady has certainly done her father proud! Genetics are amazing, aren't they? I close my eyes, and very easily recognize the husky smoothness and vocal clarity of Donny Hathaway, one of the most talented vocalists, male or female, of any generation! Lalah is truly an excellent extension of her fathers' talent, and it's great that she's sharing her gift with the world just as her father did.

  • aliquippawill,

I agree with you 100%. I saw her not to long ago where she sang the music of Shirley Horn and Sarah Vaughn. It was sectacular, hearing hear sing jazz standards. Hearing Donny come out of heer gave me chills. I told her that at times she sounds exactly like her father and said she probably hears that a lot. She said actually no. And she wishes she could live up to that. I told her she definitely is.! Peace.

  • This one of the most beautiful song that I have heard in a while. Very true to heart. It makes me reflect on times gone by and friends that once were closer. Luv It

  • dis is real music at it best..

  • nice ride!

  • Simply R&B/Jazz fusion at its meloncholy, melaodic, soulful best. Becuae this song reminds me of when I was a down n out junkie trying to hang onto my dreams and my music and the beautiful woman who stood by me even today when Im back on top. I'm thankful for REAL music.

  • LDiablo1 , Go 'head and testify !!

  • It is what it is. Even now 10 years removed from my madness, I can barely listen to this song w/o a reflective and grateful tear.

  • YES BEAUTIFUL

  • Wonderful song.....Wow

  • Your most true friends will be there even when you have nothing. They don't ride the highs with you and become a ghost when the lows roll in. Pay attention and don't overlook them.

  • this is such a good song! i first heard it in my dad's car in 7th grade. im a sophmore in college now and still think its a great song. her voice is so soothing and the lyrics tell a valuable life lesson. never forget where you came from...

  • she does sound like her father. this sista has the smoothes vocal around. great song too!! i have her with joe sample on a cd.

  • You are the ones who are underrating her by making those statements.

  • love this song...love lalah...she is so underrated and it's a shame...

  • lovely tune!!!

  • I feel you, Miss Lalah. And I love your sound...your style....your voice. Blessings to you for remaining true to music...REAL music. It's a shame you and others like you don't get fair air time. The hip hopsters could use a good dose of what music sounds like...feels like....sounds like...and IS. Keep doing ya thang thang, Miss Lalah. I feeeel ya, ma. And I like how u do what'cha do.

  • I second that, lol

  • I third it! :-S

    If thats possible...

  • I think she is a gift to us from her dad to continue his legacy. Sometimes she sounds so similar to him. She's so underrated, I wish ppl took more notice of her.

  • same here

  • i love her so much

  • SANG LALAH!!!!!

  • SANG GIRL SANG!

  • don't u just love her?

  • Lalah is so serious!!! she exemplifies what it truly means to use a voice as an instrument.

  • Always remember my friend/

    the world will change again/

and you may have to come back/

    from everywhere you've been . . . .

    Great song by great artists . . . .

  • I feel badly for the current generation - they are consumed with talentless pop "singers", never knowing what real talent sounds like.

  • I agree!!!!

  • What I love about Lalah is seh recognizes that she has a gift from God and she treasures it and shares it from her heart. The lyrics to the majority of her songs have universal meaning; nothing trite, demeaning or unbecoming of her vocal instrument. Thanks for sharing the Gifts God gave ya Lalah!

  • Absolutely Wonderful!!

  • What a wonderful voice...she reminds me of her Dad, Donnie.

    Surely God gets the Glory!

And Marcus, as always, performs so excellently...son skillfully.

    Blessings like Rivers,

    Jonathan

  • I love the deep, rich tetxture of her voice.

  • Can someone please put up "what goes around comes back around."My good friend just introduced me to her music, amazing I'm sad I didnt know anything sooner.I guess nothing before it's time. But PLEASE.what goes around.THANK YOU SO MUCH.

  • MY GOD!!! I love this song. I did a video to the original studio/cd version. Check out my page. :-D

  • I've always loved lalah. real music, wonderful voice. just as mentioned earlier, very under rated. she is one of my favorites.

  • Lalah is sooo underated! Jill Scott who?

  • i agree she is underated...but they are both excellent artists in their own unique way...its fine to have a personal opinion but no comparison necessary

  • I think Jill Scott is great too but I think Lalah is far better.

  • Lalah is TIGHT but Jill is no cupcake both are PHENOMENAL!!!! No comparison lets celebrate them both!!!

  • Just luv the texture and tone of her voice and Marcus is no joke either.

    Great Performance...

  • Oh my. 6:12 If I was blessed with that talent... Wow. Shes so pure.

  • you know you are bad when you make marcus miller shake his head acknowledging your talent. check me at 6:25 in the video. she's butta baby.

  • cbrooks005 yes that's a brilliant moment alright. Marcus Miller seems like such a humble artist. As for Lalah, when they coined the phrase the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, I'm sure they were talking about her and her dad.

  • This has always been one of my favorite songs too. My dad got me hooked on many of her songs. He would always sing this song, all the time. She can sang just like her dad, the Late Great Donnie Hathaway.

  • This has always been one of my favorites. Awesome song!!! She does a beautiful job.

  • if your father was living he would be proud. rip donnie hathaway

  • holla at yo koala

type 666 if you hate church Xr

  • i love dis song. 2day is this first tyme i heard it n a long tyme

  • I heard this son on Pandora Radio and it hit me like a ton of brick. She sounds wonderful and the song is deep. Beautiful.

  • This song is absolutely beautiful. Lalah sounds AMAZING! I can't figure out why she is no underrated!

  • Pure talent!! Wish she got the recognition that she deserves.

  • Will Jennings is incredible what a ear for melody. Who is the sax it looks Allbright Gerald.

  • I love Randy Crawford but I have to disagree with you Dooogie...Lalah shines on the record and anytime she performs this live. Its sheer genius.

  • Not bad.......but Randy Crawford's version on her Now We May Begin album is one zillion % better - nobody can sing with the emotion like Randy can.

  • That was an awesome tune too. This one has a certain richness though...Lalah's voice is beautiful.

  • Are you sure Bette Midler wrote the words and music. I can't find it on her discography or her wikepedia information.

  • Yah, lirycs are not form Bette Midler...

it's from Joe Sample & Will Jennings.

Joe Sample & Lalah version is one of my favorite songs.

  • yea!! i luv the song lives on!!!!!!!!!

    great CD

  • Trés trés Belle voix!

  • beautiful!!!!

  • love the lyrics to this song. very pretty song heard it on joe samples album
