My parents had a friend of a friend (who they believe "does great work") install a roof about 8 years ago. Roughly 30% of it blew off a couple of days ago in a wind storm. I had a professional roofing company come out to look at the damage and they showed me the exact same problem as depicted in your video.
Hopefully, your video will help to clarify to my parents that the roofing company is not trying to rip me off and that their friend is an idiot.
Every day I see workmanship issues that I just can't believe. That's why I do the before-during-after pictures and post them on my website. It's a true "trust builder".
Good to go for years...lol..Good to go for years of you nickle & dimeing him for a $300-$500 patch every spring or fall or both...Tell the truth he's screwed Bill & you know it...help him go after the builder...wheres your balls Bill. Tell him to tell his neighbors to have you check thier roofs for the same crap & empower all of them to file a class action on the builder for implied warrenty with the understanding they have you do the work for your help, price them low for volume no one argues.
Got to tell you, Arran, when I do my $247 dollar repair -- they ARE good to go for years -- unless the roof is just toast!
Here's the problem with class action lawsuits: my customers have leaks now! And have you ever noticed what someone gets from a class action lawsuit when they win? The lawyers get all of the money. Empower them? Right.
My $247 roof repair special does all the things you're talking about -- without hiring an attorney. Every body's happy.
@MdRoofingServices the only problem with your service you offer is covering up the workmanship of the lousy company that did the job in the first place. Lawsuits don't pay just lawyers in most cases they pay lawyers aswell as maybe getting another roof installed with you doing the work properly. Unless you are lifting every tab on the roof up and regluein them down how do you know for sure the entire issue is fixed.
$40 is all it costs me to have 5 shingles replaced
@DaShadowInc Problem? We are fixing the workmanship issues and exposing the lousy roof work with a video. Where's the problem with that? Now the customer is truly informed.
Number one, he needs the leak fixed right away. If he wants to persue the builder with a lawsuit, now he has some ammo. Good luck with that, though.
Part of our service is to stick down the loose tabs with Geocel. It's up to the customer to decide where to go from there now that they're informed.
actually phuckintubers he is absolutely right about what's going on with this roof. those are blow throughs (poor QC) it is nailed high and but what he failed to state ( but I'm sure he knows) when you nail the shingle properly you actually catch the top of the shingle below which further helps reduce blow offs. O and certain-teed architectural shingles are probably the best on the market
@coldsud17 : the real problem is asphalt shingles are cheap shit. people always seem to want a roof in the summer time, when its hot as hell, the guys don't give a damn about any quality, and the home owners attitude is, just get it done and get out of here. OSB decking is crap, don't hold nails, and a nail gun only blows holes into it. staples work better. the heat from the nail kills the area around the shingle, for nails that did hold, I worked as a roofer for a few years in so.cal, it sucked.
@coldsud17 : when they were around ELK made the, well, if you call it that, the best asphalt shingle. I installed every brand that was available in this area. but ELK was bought out, by a shingle manufacture who's product I will not install.
@coldsud17 hahahahaha certainteed the best??#@!% lmmfao, u might as well be using tamko....i'm an elk fan, but since they arent around i'm a timberline shinglin fool....
@phuckintubers Yes,the shingles were probably very hot, but the nails are NOT close enough and don't penetrate the shingle directly below it.
Typical speed nailing from a builder's subcontractor.
That Horizon Shingle has been discontinued too ... way to go Certainteed ... leaving millions of customers out there with no replacements available ... for a shingle known for it's "blow offs" and cracking. Screwed again by the manufacturers. Nice!
this looks almost exactly like my roof in california. wind tore off a few shingles and all the nails are all over the place. so many builders that dont pay enough attention to these details.
I'm redoing a roof (manufactured home) that the factory used staples - way too many, way too deep. Vinyl vents failed too, and not a sheathing clip to be found so the edges between rafters are roller coastering. Just finished stripping and replacement of 20 sheets along with ripping out 6 truss tops and replacing them with dimensional lumber. ALL hand nailed despite the 105 F heat index - just takes me longer to get finished so the tarps are my roofing for a few more days.
The GAF material spec book does not list a certain PSI. This is due to different shingle sizes and different decks. You just have to remember to adjust the gun to drive the nail through the deck (blow through the deck), and have the nail flush with the shingle. Remember to level the gun to the deck and not angle straight up and down as you will have angled nails in the shingles. ALWAYS hit the lay/nail line on the 2 piece laminated shingle.
thanks man im just learning still, shingling isnt a easy thing to just go out and do, i can tell it is just by if i were to do a roof bymslf i'd fuk up big time.
You do not want to high nail as you will only hit one part of the shingle on laminates. Remember to level the gun to the deck and not angle straight up and down as you will have angled nails in the shingles. ALWAYS hit the lay/nail line on the 2 piece laminated shingle. good luck
That's all really good advice, Rsprings. Good advice on hitting the nail line too, especially on the GAFs (Timberline).
Our pressures run between 65 and 85 PSI depending on temperature, shingle thickness, age and condition of the roofing gun, etc. It's not uncommon to have to change the settings during the day as the shingles warm up.
NOBODY in our business pays attention to pressure settings - they just nail as fast as they can and we come back a few years later and fix them.
Thanks, John. Yep, that guy was just flying -- and at least half of the nails were "blown through" the shingles.
At least with Certainteed's "sealing strip" the shingles will resist the wind for a while, until the strip dries out and loses its effectiveness. Then the shingles start blowing off.
