magic simply magic, she was the best, no arguement, so called artsist win x factor and go to number one, they vanish then never to be seen again,Dusty goes on and on,nobody will ever get tired of hearing her voice. and nobody will ever forget her.
The public fell into a coma and lost the power to demand quality and truth such as this brilliant talent. No tricks, no digital shit to amplify or whatever..... Not one singer from Madonna to Byonce or whoever the latest fad is, could sing live onstage without their gimmicks and fireworks and sound good. There are no more real voices only computer sounds.
i saw Dusty in the early 70's, on a TV show from the UK. The Four Tops were singing My Girl, and spied Dusty in the audience. The got her up on stage to join them in a long version of the song, and the audience went wild.
An astonishing LIVE performance. Dusty, there is no one who will ever surpass your ability to truly and honestly share a song with her audience like you. Even through the veil of time, watching and listening to you on my iPhone, I feel that you are singing directly to me. I love you, Dusty :-)

Why should we question the stars that appear in our eyes? Of this, I'm more than just sure. Your spell will last and endure. Thank you, Mary, for providing the loving soundtrack to our lives.
"...........the night doesn't question the stars that appear in the sky......so why should I question the stars that appear in my eyes...........". Very romantic. passionate line of the song. How I love it!!
Try telephone book also. If she had sung it you would look under 'D' for Dusty because no one else could sing it and she would be the only diva listed
Wow! Another fantastic video. It just brings to life the glamour and excitment of this fabulous time when she was at her youthful best. I just can't describe the shivers it brings to me...
its hardly as if she was unappreciated in the 60's. Saw an interview with Tom Jones who said Dusty was as big as it got in the 60's. she was very popular everywhere
You're correct, in some respects...but Dusty never toured with The Beatles, played Madison Square Garden, Carnegie Hall or the Royal Albert, The Fillmore, Monterey or Woodstock in the 60s Most of her touring was gentlemen's clubs in England and Supper Clubs in New York....I think she was severely limited by her management. I was a teen during her peak years, and yes, she was big, but should have been much, much bigger.
Imagine what Brian Epstein or Peter Grant could have done for her.....
I don't think she'd have gone over well at The Fillmore or the big festivals. To that crowd, someone who sang with an orchestra, did straight versions of showtunes and standards, and appeared on TV wearing evening gowns, especially if she also did soul covers, wouldn't have seemed "authentic."
Don't get me wrong, I think she was a dozen times the singer Janis Joplin was, both in technique and emotional power, but she would have been unfairly dismissed as "not hip" like the Beach Boys were.
She originally rode to the top on the Mod British Invasion wave, so she knew how to be hip....Her material would have had to be adjusted somewhat, but a good manager and producer could have steered her that way. As great as Janis was, it's my opinion Dusty was the finest singer the 60s produced. Dusty's career was managed in a similar way to Elvis', creatively, and it did cost her artistic credibility. I can only imagine where she could have gone...
But Dusty was pretty much in control of her own career. The things that you say cost her artistic credibility are the things she wanted to do. Would her career have been better artistically without "Look of Love" and "You Don't Have to...?" I think she wasnt as interested in psychedelic rock as she was in working with Bacharach and singing those big ballads. Plus, the "in crowd" of the time couldn't accept soul if it sounded too sophisticated, and Dusty was always more Dionne than Aretha.
Those are good points.....I think she needed a Brian Epstein type of manager.
Her manager was a young girl named Vicki Wickham who certainly wasn't prepared to manage a star of the caliber Dusty became, and I think that's a large part of why her career stalled.
The audiences of the 60s appreciated a large variety of music. I believe with the right band she could have played the Fillmore and other venues. She tried to become contemporary in the 70s-80s but had lost her momentum.
glastonbury festival here in the uk always have an old performer on the main stage on the last afternoon of the festival. Recently theres been tom jones, shirley bassey, brian wilson, how awesome what have been if dusty was still around and had performed her 60's classics
I think she'd have gone down a storm. Ian Gillan of Deep Purple should know. He wrote: "Dusty Springfield was probably the greatest rock singer I ever heard. If anyone should raise an eyebrow at that, I'd like to say that I toured with Dusty in '65 and believe me.......she rocked!"
Yes, but IMO she should have been right up there with Elvis and The Beatles. She was certainly a better singer and could sing any style of music imaginable.
I really do beleive that last 8 second note is the greatest single note ever sung by a female pop/soul singer - how she hold the note so steady until ending with the tightest glass shattering vibrato - the hairs on my neck just start dancing around.
"It was 1965 and I heard a mesmerizing voice pouring out of my car radio...The singer was Dusty Springfield, whose voice - tender and pristine - conveyed a vulnerability both sexual and soulful. Her intonation was incredibly accurate, hitting every note on the nose, sustaining her tones to perfection, with a minimal vibrato that never wavered or quavered." Jerry Wexler, legendary producer of Dusty in Memphis at Atlantic Records
I agree - incredible performance, though it's hard to pick one favourite among so many gems. 'I don't want to go on without you' from the same show is mesmerising too.
Classic Dusty Springfield...pure emotion and perfection. This performance will stand up for 100 years or more. Her talent has withstood the test of time and will continue to astound listeners for generations I hope.
I've often wondered what kind of appropriate memorial could be built to honor Dusty, but I think that she actually built it herself years ago...and here it is. I'm just going to listen to it again.
Thanks for posting this and all of the wonderful Dusty clips.
The front part of her hair is hers the back is a hair peice. I remember I had the same hair do back then everyone did. Dusty influence us and we loved her for it. RIP Dusty..
The liner notes of Dusty Springfield Live At The BBC note that all the shows were wiped in the 1970s, and once they realized they lost a goldmine they began searching the world over for licensed footage and recovered the second series plus the first three episodes of the first series. Better than nothing I s'pose but yes, it would be a gift to find the rest of them!
The decision would have been made by penny-pinching managers. There were loads of good stuff wiped - including most of the earlier b&w episodes of 'Till Death Us Do Part''. However, with a little bit of intelligence, the 'wiper' could have put them aside. I'd have stored them at home. I would have wiped Terry & June though.
