Hey brother I went ahead and bought the 16.4.2 but my only question is are you routing the main mix back into a stereo pair to record the reverb and delays? I like the effects on this mixer but all I'm recording in my DAW is the EQ, compression, and gate. No reverb or delay. I just got it so I haven't really got to check out all the routing capabilities. Anyway if you have any suggestions give me a holler. Jam on buddy.
@jokemane Works great with Ableton LIVE. You will most likely use channels 17&18 for your main outs on the Studio Live. Create a default template that has 17&18 as your master and monitor out and yer gold!
Nice vid. how do you like the presonus now that youve had it a while?I almost bought one the other day but i wanted to check it out a little more.also that beat is tight.
Hey i had the same thing when i switched interfaces - have you done that recently?
If so you may have an i/o conflict
You can get tripped up when trying to run previous sessions that were made using a previous i/o mapped setup - if you go to your i/o setup, have a look & UNCHECK "use setting from last session" - and then load the default i/o and PT will see and make the correct i/o setup map to match the Firestudio
If this isn't the problem or solution then i'm stumped......
I have A 8-hr course on Pro Tools, I can teach you how to use every feature in Pro Tools down to the minute detail. Very comprehensive videos teach you at your own pace to run Pro Tools 9(any version) like any Professional Music Engineer. Prices are very low, reply to comment for info.
Cool video! I just ordered the StudioLive to use for live sound. I never thought about using it in the studio until watching your video. Has me re-thinking some things now. Thanks!
How do you get the DAW PLAYBACK into the AUX MIXES? If you use FIREWIRE channel 17/18 to send DAW audio then you can send DAW Playback to mains, headphones and moniters ONLY but NOT to ANY of the 6 AUX Sends correct?
This is a real weakness. They should have page in the menu to send the DAW to the AUX send like you can with efffects. As far as I understand it you can't really have separate monitor mixes in the studio because they can't hear the DAW playback.
Hey great video. I have the same setup you do, presonus studiolive and pro tools 9. I wanted to see if you could tell me how you set up the i/o in pro tools that your using in this video. How did you get the output to be S/PDIF on all of the channels? I really need to have my i/o setup the same way you do but i cant figure it out for the life of me. Thanks for your help, and thanks again for the awesome video.
HOLA MI CONNECT TO PRO TOOLS MIXER 9 AND WHEN I GIVE HIGH OR LOW IN THE TRACK OF THE MIXER WHEN YOU LISTEN TO THE PRO TOOLS RECORDING IS NOT RIGHT RECORDS DO YOU NEED ME
HOLA CONECTE MI MIXER AL PRO TOOLS 9 Y CUANDO LE DOY HIGH O LOW EN EL TRACK DE LA MIXER CUANDO LO ESCUCHO EN EL PRO TOOLS NO LO GRABA SE GRABA DERECHO QUE ME FALTA HACER
It looks like you're returning the signal from Pro Tools via the individual FW returns so that they come up on the faders and thusly you can give people custom headphone mixes, as opposed to the default stereo return (17&18). My question is: does the amount of latency bother vocalists? You can set the buffer as small as 64, but that still results in some latency... not enough to mess up with the timing, but enough to perhaps bother a vocalist hearing themselves through bone conduction.
@WilfredFumbly I've never heard any latency with this board. Or at least, I should say that I've never heard a complaint from any of the singer's I've recorded. The best part about it is that the reverb on the board sounds pretty damn good.
@mikessax the amount of latency, I believe, depends on how you're using the board. In the Sound on Sound review, they mention figures of between 3 and 24 ms. That's not enough to cause any timing issues. But it is long enough that a *singer* would hear themselves through bone conduction and then a tiny fraction of a second later hear themselves through the headphones. It would sound vaguely "phasey", which might bother some singers who are used to zero or very low latency.
@Kawiracer300 I didn't have any problems. Just make sure that your computer is either a Mac or a PC with an approved TI chipset. Protools sees all of the inputs and outputs of the board.
Also, I only had problems when I took out the Delta 1010 card. I finally got protools to launch a few times and see the delta 1010 as the default interface and under i/0 settings i could change it to the studiolive. id like to just use the studio live and retire the 1010. Could it be the firewire card in my computer? Its built into the mother board. Maybe I should pick up a firewire card. any help?
* Im using a custom pc, win 7/64bit pro, with 12 gig ram. 10,000 rpm hdrives.
@Downstreamfans It's probably the firewire card. My buddy has a pc and had to get one that had a TI chipset in it. You might want to check with the Presonus techsupport to find out which one they recommend.
@mikessax, hey thanks. I have one laying over here that is TI Chipset. Im currenty using the Firewire card thats built into my Asus Motherboard. I'll try that Firewire card later tonight. Thanks dude.
I was using protools 7.4, 8-9 With my Delta 1010 and it worked wonderful.
Then I picked up the Studio Live 16.4.2 to use with Protools 9. Im having problems with Protools 9 launching and seeing the studio Live. Any Help. I have the latest Drivers for Protools 9.1 & the latest vsl and drivers for the studio live. Id rather not use studio one or capture which I haven t loaded anyways. When it does work its wonderful.
Can you record all 32 channels into PT9? I thought you could only dp 16 at the time. Not that I have a 32 input session happening all the time, but sometimes I do need more than 16 inputs at the time
@compirri147 You can do it either way: you can send stems from ProTools back to the StudioLive and have them come up on faders. Then you can use the StudioLive's eqs, compression and effects and then mix back to inputs 17/18 in PT. OR you can mix in ProTools and just use the mixer to monitor with. I've done it both ways and it's really just a matter of preference. The cool thing about mixing on the board is that it doesn't take up any of your computer's horsepower.
Why on earth would you compress and eq before recording, that limits you so much when it comes to mixing. Otherwise great video man, I think I will be picking one up for my rig, except maybe the 24 channel one
Not if you know what you are doing. If fact, recording with EQ and compression can be a huge benefit if it's done properly. However, I wouldn't be recording with the EQ and compression from the board as I have found that it sounds awful if you push it too hard. You'd be better off using some nicer plugins like Waves or Oxford.
Only thing missing on this board: MIDI! you can record and playback but without any DAW control or MIDI in and outputs; compare with the Yamaha 01V96; they have the same features. But including MIDI and DAW control. Costs practicly the same amount of money: I am a Presonus fan, but Presonus has to add these features to keep up with the competition
@grutskband yup i hear yah. I was worked up about it when it first came out. im also a presonus fan, have the studio channel, adl600, and HP4 pre. I use the Alesis Master Control W/ProTools9 now my 003rack is collecting Dust
Ive been wanting to use the SL, but I was under the impression you couldn't use it as a front end of a studio. Can u adjust the sample rate in ecapture sftwr, or are u going straight into PT9. Are you sending to a AD/DA converter and/or a clock, before it gets to PT?? Thx, kglas4bass
@kglas4bass Yes you can change the sample rate on the board. The converters in the board sound really freaking good. I a/b'd against and apogee rosetta 800 and couldn't hear the difference.

It's possible to integrate StudioLive in DAW as surface controller ?
