Let me just run through the events up until now in Afghanistan.

Firstly Al Quaeda attacked the US, this "activated" the NATO obligation of any member nations to help defend USA. We found that Al Quaeda was based in the mountains on the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan. Afghanistan at this point was completely in the shitter compared to Pakistan. We found out that it was the Taliban government that enabled Al Quaeda to use that area as a base of operations. (cont.)

You are right that those fighters were once Mujahideen rebels. But Osama Bin Laden (you know, the fella who got shot recently) founded the Al Quaeda on the remnants of the Mujahideen.

But wether the fighters were Al-Quaeda, Mujahideen, Taliban, or some local army they are still combatants of war. They are not I repeat NOT innocent farmers and civilians anymore. The second they pick up arms they are combatants (meaning opposing soldiers are allowed to shoot on sight).

The Al Quaeda was based in Afghanistan. And our membership to NATO compels us to help a fellow NATO country to mount a counter-attack on the aggressor. Now the war has ended and we have to stabilize the region which is why we're there. To help rebuild the infrastructure and help Afghanistan back on its feet as a peace-keeping force (which includes helping the Afghan Self Defense Force keep out the Taliban).

I'm not Canadian, but I will say this about their forces. The Canadian GIs are the BEST trained in the world. No general infantry have more training. Our US Navy Seals are sent to train in the same facility the Canadian GIs do. I have nothing but respect for our neighbours to the north. Nice shot.

They are all great and being a enlisted soldier myself I have nothing but respect for anyone who serves in any branch of the military. None of them are easy. In the British S.A.S you have to have I think 6 years of military experience and have extreamly high phsyical test scores, and even then I think they said 1 out of every 3000 make the cut. And nothing but the best try out. Talk about a challenge..
