  • lovely video! really enjoyed watching it, perfect squash! i am going to grow them this year, hopefully i will be as successful as you! :)

  • @PlantingMemories Had to buy some zucchini at the store today; I miss that veggie during the winter. Still eating our spaghetti and butternut squash tho. Have a few left, but our stash won’t last until new ones are ready. Nothing like fresh! Lynn

  • Hi Housebanks22, I plant marigolds everywhere just because I like them so much. Their purpose in the garden is to attract beneficial insects like bees to pollinate the veggies, and they discourage damaging insects and some animals. Because they are so fragrant when any part of them is touched, it acts as a shield to protect the squash and other veggies. I have learned that it is good to rototill them right into the soil in the fall for added protection. Hope this is helpful. Lynn

  • what do the marigolds do?

  • Thanks. No I don’t use pesticides on food plants. I plant lots of marigolds around them, pick off the old flowers and throw them right onto the squash plants. Trim leaves to let the air circulate. If I see bugs on them, I spray them with a mixture of 1 t. dish soap (not antibacterial kind, just cheap liquid dish soap), 1 clove of garlic, mashed and strained (so it won’t clog the sprayer), and one quart of water.

Put in spray bottle, soak as much of plant as possible. Repeat if necessary.

  • VERY healthy squash. I filmed a squash borer moth on Friday in my WI garden. They killed my IL garden squash. Did you use a pesticide?
