  • Fantastic!

  • i'm playing trombone studies by alessi, dodson and vernon... and now i just found that video! great... ;D

  • I love the chord at 4:14. Anybody know what it is?

  • well, it's essentially an Eb7, but I'm trying to get the progression smoothed out in my own mind.

I'm working my sleepy brain to figger it out, Jubba, but you do some theory homework too, OK? Does the phrase "augmented VI chord" sound familiar?

  • @JubbaDaTrombone It seems to be a Db7, and the coda is in F. The progression sounds like Bb, Bbm, F, Db7. At least it works when I play those chords along with them!

  • Amazing. Amazing. Absolutely incredible. Such great players. And great singers! :-)

  • Lol, I couldn't figure out which one was Alessi until they started playing because of the beard.

  • Sure looks a lot different now. Now he has just about no hair. I've never seen him with a beard, more or less with a full head of hair. As for the ensemble this is quite the all star lineup!

  • Vernon isn't exactly excelling in the hair category either, lol.

  • you know when your a good musician when you can sing just as well as you can play!!!

  • Fantastic

  • the singing + playing are really good. personally, i prefer when they play...

  • briliant

  • this is amazing, are they actually singing? im so glad i clicked on his video! :)

  • Mr. Blackburn, this is wonderful! I've listened to a few of the recordings Joe Alessi has on his website. It goes to show you how important sight singing is! Now I'm dying to know, who sings what part? I think that Charlie Vernon is ironically, the high tenor. Am I right?

  • No way. That's definitely him on bass trombone.

  • Whoops, you meant vocally.... Then yes.

  • Dodson's Bolero (in a performance I saw back in 1993, I think) was an inspiration. Was this the trombone section that played on the mid-eighties Muti recording of Pini di Roma? You guys seriously rock!

  • wow..........

  • oh, thank you... he has chanched very much until yet !!! but he plays like a god ! :-)

  • who is alessi ?

    where does he stand ??

  • Joseph Alessi (currently principal trombone of the NY Phil.)is 2nd from the left end

  • oh, thank you... he has chanched very much until yet !!! but he plays like a god ! :-)

  • 5erdom Alessi in a trombone player with the NY Philharmonic. He is also a total virtuoso on trombone. He is the dude with the beard next to the trumpet player. I love his sound. Check him out playing the excerpt from Bolero it's on You Tube some place.

  • WONDERFUL!!!!

there're no other words to explain!!!

    I love it!!!

    Giulio

  • Grizzly Alessi, I love it

  • Mr. Blackburn, thank you for the excellent video post! I had listen to the audio and I am very excited to see a video! Truly amazing!!

    Take care,

    Alex Nisbet

  • That was great. You need another trumpet though. (Me.)

    Zak

  • mr blackburn, this is AMAZING!!!!

  • This is good! Puts me in mind of a Fourth of July parade!!! Thanks for posting this!

    They're wonderful!!

  • I well know from personal experience that singing and playing a musical instrument often takes a different kind of breath support...to do both well is amazing! Thanks for the double musical treat!

  • Ah yes, 1984;I remember it well: The year of hair and harmony.

  • Ater 34 years in the Philadelphia Orchestra (2008), the years I performed with this quartet were my favorite. We were true ambassadors for the orchestra as we performed voluntarily for fund raising projects such as the Radiothons and various orchestra-related banquets. My biggest regret is that we never had a reunion. Now it is too late as we lost Glenn Dodson Easter weekend of 2007. I hope to post more clips like this very soon!

  • Oh my god! joseph alessi singing and with a BEARD! NICE! haha he's a legend! not to forget charles vernon!

  • Oh my god! joseph alessi singing and with a Hair on his head!!!!1
