it's still the 3rd or 4th biggest MMO out there - retaining over 500,000 individual subscribers with over 2 million characters even after 8 years.
they've made it a lot easier for early levels - worth playing still for sure. a mind-blowingly expansive MMO, 20 jobs on a single character, and an actual storyline complete with cut scenes and memorable characters.
yeah people still play it, but sometimes its kinda hard to start out cause everyone i already high lvl, but you can still pull it off, its a very good game in my opinion, you'll become addicted :P
I've been playing FFXI for years. The game is becoming boring for most of my friends. We all plan to jump on board FFXIV at launch. I don't think FFXI will be able to handle losing people to FFXIV. Too much of the game requires tons of people to do anything especially the tougher mobs.
I've been hearing that an estimated 5% of the population of FFXI will leave for FF14. This is mostly due to the fact that many of these players have characters that have been around for 4+ years. That's a lot of investment to just throw away because a new version comes out.
This is what happened to EverQuest 2. The playerbase was split in half because EQ Veterans didn't want to lose their characters and ended up sticking with the original instead.
2011 might be the end of ffxi just cuz if the profits breaks even or gos under there gonna kill the servers. knowing SE ffxiv will be the same shit with different ways to them.
It's not worse than WoW but it is a different experience than World of Warcraft. With WoW you have a fast paced MMO that is basically a hack and slash in terms of combat. It's fast paced and it gets you into the action faster.
With a game like FFXI it's much slower and it takes time to travel and the combat isn't as fast. It's technically a turn based combat system but with the perk of being able to move around freely in fights. It's more or less a copy of EverQuest with Final Fantasy lore.
There are still around 1 Million active subscribers to FFXI. If you hear otherwise then just ignore ignorant WoW fanboys that think that World of Warcraft is the only MMO in existence. You should definitely check this game out. If you don't like it then all you have to do is cancel before your 30 day trial runs out.

It's quite odd, but the game was released in 2002 and it was first shown in 2000; But in the two years the images shown show a complete restructuring of the game and it's look .
I played the original NA release and a bit of the expansions. This is a pretty accurate depiction of what can be seen in the game. The dragon appears to be the World Boss Nidhogg. The only thing I saw in this trailer that isn't in the game is monster interaction (the giant purple Goobbue eats a small Mandragora).

unless your Ps2 has an HDD you can't save ffxi to your ps2 since it's too big. When FFXI first came out for the ps2 it came with the HDD, and you'd need to use the old ps2, the really big ones that first came out, you put the HDD inside from the back, and use a Network adapter to connect the HDD to the Ps2.

The 2 million is on the website and there was an interview last year that said actually 60% was gold sellers. I'm sure they have taking action and gotten rid of a lot of them. Also developer don't play the game other than in test servers and they don't count themselves. They may have 11 million players but only half of them are actually active...
FFXI is no WoW killer, it's just the game people play that don't like WoW or WoW style games(i.e. Warhammer Online).
I never said WoW was a bad game. I mean it wouldn't have 6 million active players if it was but I just didn't enjoy it. The player base isn't very mature. I seriously played the game on 7 different characters and wasn't usually playing with anyone older than12. The first person I played with was 7 her mom actually got on and told me that lol. I'm sure if FFXI had player cards like WoW did it would boost it's player base up by a lot but they don't which is nice so I don't have to play with kids.

I played the original NA release and a bit of the expansions. This is a pretty accurate depiction of what can be seen in the game. The dragon appears to be the World Boss Nidhogg. The only thing I saw in this trailer that isn't in the game is monster interaction (the giant purple Goobbue eats a small Mandragora).

Thanks for the insight! To be honest, i've always been interested in MMO's; but honestly i've found them all to be the same (point and click games, with a lot of strategy)...I'm holding off until a proper action MMORPG is released. But it looks like a good game.

it gets pretty fun, I tried rappelz, shaiya, 2moons, fiesta, and like a million other games but FFXI seems to be more organized. compared to all the other mmorpg games i've ever played, ffxi takes the cake imo.

I agree. People say the price is ridiculous. But I have also tried a lot of other MMORPG's. I still think FF is the best. But people have different tastes, so one thing you think is good somebody else may think is rubbish!

I have been playing that for nearly over a year and already I am DRG75 (top level in-game) and yeah from what I have seen of the trailer compared to the game all those creatures are in it at some point, it's an awsome game

unless your Ps2 has an HDD you can't save ffxi to your ps2 since it's too big. When FFXI first came out for the ps2 it came with the HDD, and you'd need to use the old ps2, the really big ones that first came out, you put the HDD inside from the back, and use a Network adapter to connect the HDD to the Ps2.

If I remember correctly, it's the 7th most populated MMO at the moment. Everquest 1 AND 2 COMBINED don't even make up this total and that game has a cult following.

The 2 million is on the website and there was an interview last year that said actually 60% was gold sellers. I'm sure they have taking action and gotten rid of a lot of them. Also developer don't play the game other than in test servers and they don't count themselves. They may have 11 million players but only half of them are actually active...
FFXI is no WoW killer, it's just the game people play that don't like WoW or WoW style games(i.e. Warhammer Online).

I never said WoW was a bad game. I mean it wouldn't have 6 million active players if it was but I just didn't enjoy it. The player base isn't very mature. I seriously played the game on 7 different characters and wasn't usually playing with anyone older than12. The first person I played with was 7 her mom actually got on and told me that lol. I'm sure if FFXI had player cards like WoW did it would boost it's player base up by a lot but they don't which is nice so I don't have to play with kids.

-.- Don't be a Youtard. It is true WoW does have over 11 million players. But honestly it depends on what you are into. "crappy pve game" for you. Great PvE game for a PvE player. I used to play WoW, but I got bored with it. Doing the same stuff, it started to become repetitive for me. So now I have decided to try other games like Final Fantasy XI Online.

I been looking all over for a different and maybe older FFXI commercial.
It goes like this :
There is a Japanese guy eating a hamburger or a sandwich in front of his PC while a girl was out for shopping or something. When she gets home she finds out she got a message from the guy and logs into FFXI. Then they show the game and those 2 persons playing togheter.
