Dowsing does actually "work". My grandfather used to dig wells. If a client wanted to he would dowse for water. He wound up digging where he wanted to dig anyway and it worked as well as not dowsing. A lot of traditional magic works like that. The problems with it only become apparent when people have a scientific world view and a valid testing procedure.
