  • Gerontic, is to be of or pertaining to old age (senile). Gerontion is the greek word for old man

  • Tom, Another great reading. It is true that Eliot was focused on old age. When he was only 23, he wrote Prufrock: "I am old".

  • "on" is a present participle form of "estin" -- to be, but also a common nominative ending for neuter nouns (for example, to dendron - tree). the word for elder is the substantive "gerontos", so gerontion might translate (awkwardly) to "being old"
