Vhuskey - Believe me. I've been paying enough attention to them to form my opinion about them.

When you compare their earlier works (1984-1991) to their more recent material (1993-present), the former era is far better than the latter.

Their more recent work is bland, IMHO. Point in case -- "Beautiful Day" off their 2000 release. I think it's one of the most monotonous tracks ever written.

Did it get noticed because it was a good song, or merely because the marketing machine pushed it?

actually, many people like the song for the lyrics, not just the way Bono sings it. I'd prefer it without the falsettos that make my ears bleed, but i listen for the lyrics. Lyrics are the things that make a song great.
