RIP Grete..You were truly inspirational and I channel you when I run races. You broke through and you will be missed! I loved meeting you when I had no idea who you were in Boston at an expo and my husband who was an avid marathoner had to fill me in and you were so gracious and kind and took a picture with me. You were so humble it was amazing! I will never forget it!
To people living outside her native Norway I can assure that her death hasn't been taken lightly here in Norway either. She is considered the greatest female athlete in our country's history, and her massive work for charity has been well noted. Just today the Prime Minister of Norway announced Waitz would receive a State Funeral, the 6th woman to ever get this honor.
Ahhh, she was always my favorite runner, I used to make a banner with her name on it and hold it up in that section of Queens they would run through. And my friends and I would scream her name as she passed by...!
