  • Yeah bro, those cars are heavily loaded. Those flanges are grinding the hell out the rail head.

  • doesnt that mean the engineer is applying the air brakes on the cars???

  • @CSX2665

not really, the sound is caused by the flanges on the wheels binding on the rail as they go around on the sharp turn.

  • @bubba2781 but if a train is going in a straight line and u hear squealing from the cars,r those the air brakes being applied???

  • @CSX2665

Could be, but I have heard trains in full emergency and not make that much noise.

  • @CSX2665 When you hear the squealing on straight track the trucks are doing whats known in the railroading community as fishing. You can't tell visually that the trucks are moving from side to side in motion but he can definitely hear it when the wheel flange hits and grinds against the rail head. Brakes being applied makes a totally different sound.

  • old trains

  • The sound is hypnotizing. That is awesome.

  • @ad627 #LOL HAHAHAHA

  • brakes must be bad on the hoppers

  • It's not the brakes. Its the wheels binding going around this sharp curve.

  • ok now I understand

  • @bubba2781 nahhhh its the age of em

  • Hell, I love that sound. It reminds me of my trip to Horseshoe Curve last year. Ahh, memories. Great catch; thanks for posting it.

  • The retarders in a hump yard are far noisier.

  • Man love the sound. Sounds like screeching metal.
