  • Hi Scotty, I love your show. How about that. Acura TL 1999. Starts and dies on hot engine, but perfectly starts on cold? Thank you Alex.

  • @Flyahead they often flood out doing that, because of leaking fuel injectors or fuel pressure regulators.

  • It will be pretty bad on my 4runner. The water pump is driven by the timing belt. I dont like to do half ass jobs on my truck, so everything needs to be changed; timing belt, idler pullies, rad hoses, water pump, thermostat, coolant, the lot. In all about 300 dollars and two days to change. Fun. Fun.

  • scotty I have 98 accord V6 210k miles and im gonna do a 2nd timing belt change, should i also do a 2nd water pump change also?? i think i remember hearing people say when you change timing belt also change water pump? thank you for all your help :)

  • @qwer01230 I would to be safe.

  • Also forgot to add, there is no fluid leaking from the water pump, thanks.

  • @tompwh watch my video "how to fix an overheating car" to fix overheating problems.

  • It would be good if you had a video showing how to wedge a screwdriver on the bolts to keep the water pump pulley from spinning on a 95 chevy cavalier. Its not that easy.

  • @Computerstyle34 I have a special tool that fits on the pump, it's easy.

  • I like to thank you Scotty, for your videos and your funny spirit.

Cheers from Brazil. Sory my english..

  • i like the uhh sound effects when tighten and loosening bolts

  • It's not that bad to do a water pump but that depends on the car. On the '01 VW GTI I had with the VR6, you have to jack the engine up about 8 inches to even think about getting enough clearance to remove the water pump.

  • @YouSoundButtHurt of course some are true crappers to work on, Especially poorly designed VWs.

  • @scottykilmer You said it! Thanks for all your great vids Scotty!

  • Hello scotty. i'm refering to ur videos and many other sources to change the water pump, timing belt, and tensioner pulley on my good old 86 BMW e30. Do i always have to put gasket sealer before putting the gasket? I ask because none of the other diy's say anything about this. I'm replacing them because it hasn't been done for more than 6 years i believe, plus it started leaking; sending the coolant like lube to the belts. Thanks in advance, all of your videos have been really helpful. God bless

  • @tususpop i USE sealer when I put em on. and be sure to use quality parts, not cheap chinese knock offs.

  • what was that squeaking...

  • @bobthebuilder6938

Yeah! I was wondering the same thing.

I got a similar squeak in mine.

  • Haha Scotty is like the Mr T of car repair............quit foolin' around with those tools and listen up!

Great videos Scotty.......straight to the point with no messing around with useless trivia.

  • you r awesome:)

  • Scotty I have a 2002 V6 camry that needs the water pump and timing belt replaced. How much do you think it's reasonable for my mechanic to charge me?

    Thanks Scotty love your videos.

  • @MrRSlkr that's an expensive job, as the timing belt has to be removed to chang ehte pump. 450 bucks or so is what I charge. Scotty

  • Aww, maaaan....that was soooo easy! Thanx Scotty! You the man!!

  • Ok Scotty I have a 2001 Chevrolet Malibu, Just yesterday it started leaking coolant at a very quick rate and now my engine overheats. I looked and looked but couldn't see where the leak was coming from. I put more coolant while the engine was sitting and i could hear squirting. I turned the car on and It began pouring out of the engine but I still couldnt see the leak. Could you tell me what it might be

  • @KillerFox47 find where the water is pouring out, have someone pour it in while you jack it up and see the source. Often the water pump leaks, right by the fan belts. Scotty

  • Sorry front well where the belt is?

  • I have a car thats leaking water/coolant but cant see where its leaking from, but it only seems to leak from the front left side, but it only leaks when im driving it i think, what would your diagnosis be?

  • @Rafaelipod that's almost always a leaking water pump , as the pump is right there behind the belts. Scotty

  • all easy until a lousy bolt breaks in the engine block. not fun

  • Yeah, but my 99 Honda Civic's water pump is in the timing belt housing, making it quite a bit more laborious than this video makes it look. In fact, that's the very reason I took it to a shop. Haynes made it look way too difficult to get at the timing belt housing.

  • man u make it look easy

  • Thanks Scotty, it means a lot to mean, more money to save, ha ha thanks again.

  • i love you haha

  • Thats a nice video unfortunately it does no good if your water pump is driven by your cars timing chain.... Stay away from Dodge 2.7L motors if you know what's good for you!

  • Thanks Scotty - that was very helpful!

  • How do you bleed the cooling system?

  • @Jcal022 just running them then refilling them with the heater on full blast after they cool down an hour or so normally works. If not, I use a vacuum bleeding system. Scotty

  • Could a car being flushed (an older car) be the cause of a water pump going? I took my car to the mechanic and they reccomended a flush but now it's leaking antifreeze everywhere and overheating and my friend who used to be a mechanic said it was because it was from the flush.

  • @Mudsie Yes, flushes can cause gasket and seal leaks. Scotty

  • Scotty what's the music that sounds right at the end of the video?

  • @JackMacyntire Just background music from friends. Scotty

  • i see ur a harbor freigth kinda mechanic nice

  • On my GTI with a VR6 I had to loosen the pass side motor mount and jack up the engine at least 6 inches to get to the water pump. Every car is its own challenge. Great vid!

  • lol this is a video from the weakest man in the WORLD!

lol, j/k excellent vid bro, really helpful

97 infiniti convertible- Water Pump= 5 Hours Project at LEAST!

  • @vctrfs2 suk ma cok

  • Scotty i do have a question Are these new Chrysler vehicles are reliable what is your opinion about these cars i want to hear your honest opinion please answer as soon as you can

  • @Turbodieselracer No, they are CRAP, always have been, always will be probably. Even my grandfather, who was a mechanic, hated em way back then. Cheaply designed and cheaply made, they break down all the time. Scotty

  • WELL...that looked easy enough...Im a first time female lol.....here goes. Thanks heaps x

  • question.. i have a 98 vt commodore.. the actual pulley itself wont spin around, i snapped and burnt a fan belt, then tried it again with a bit of wd40, nothing and nearly burnt new fan belt after i put it on... so im guessing its just a bearing? so will buy a water pump and replace it? obviously drain radiator first? wondering how much they cost

  • @maggiez87 Yep, the bearings are burned out . As for price, just call around, prices vary widely, espeically with chinese made replacements being much cheaper.

  • also havent used my car in 6 months, and heaps of stuff has started happening to it that i have to replace ect.. but an add on to what i just wrote, if some how my radiator has a leak and has no coolant/water in it (because im always topping it up), would this cause the pulley to not move? i havent checked though, lol hope there is no such thing as a dumb question.. thanks for taking the time to read what ive written and answering my question in advanced

  • That Mercedes was screeching bad when you started it up : o Tight belts or bad fan clutch?? O.o

  • but dont u need to bleed it out when u finished pouring the antifreeze?

  • @djnoizeboi if you leave the radiator cap off and let it run for a min before you put the radiator cap on all the air bleeds out of the system

  • How can i change the water pump for a honda civic 98???@@@ plzzz hellpp

  • my car's radiator fan kicks on as soon as the temperature reaches normal and doesnt cut off unless i turn the car off also the heat doesnt stay on unless im driving (doesnt stay warm at idle) could you tell me what that could be i have a 95 taurus with 122k

  • @ezkeyboardkid58 Try changing out the thermotime switch for the fans, any auto parts store can sell you one and show you where it is. If that doesn't do it, then either the fan relay is sticking or the engine is wearing out and just running too hot. Scotty

  • please what is a brief breakdown on how to replace a dodge intrepid waterpump? It seems as if everything on these kinds of cars (chryslers, dodge) are exhausting. Is it totally necessary to disassemble the car(if u know what i mean)?

  • @dewan247 Yes, they are crappers, designed by people just wanting to make em cheap and hard to repair. If you have a V6 engine, it's just one cow of a job. Get a cheap 20 buck or less manual that will give you every step and pictures. Scotty

  • Hi , I have a 98 VW Jetta that I am suspecting has a bad water pump it is not leaking but the gage reads a little to the right when I drive a while. Could it be something else or it is definitely the water pump. The car has got 95k miles.

  • @pmpetrov Tons of things can cause such a minor hotter running. I would pressure test the system and see if there are any leaks before doing any work. Scotty

  • WOW, just found your site and your videos, definitly BOOKMARKING!

Anyway, any tips or issues with doing this for a 1999 Jeep Wrangeler/TJ 4 cyl...my GF's Jeep Water pump just went Kaput and we have to do it ourselves, moneys tight and all that.

Also, do we have to go through the timing case on this model?

  • @croaker260 Pretty easy job, all done from the outside of the engine, do em all the time in an hour or so. Scotty

  • can u tell me anything about a 93 camry ths same problem

  • @BigLongJon21 For that car, you need to take the front of the engine apart, and replace the timing belt and water pump, as the pump is driven by the timing belt. Watch my video, How to change a timing belt in your car, that shows how to do the belt, then you would just unbolt the water pump also to replace that. Scotty

  • First time watching your videos and instantly love em! Very informative. As a total car amateur, this tip along with the replacing the radiator could possibly save me $800! I havent put these skill to the test just yet. I need to order the parts first. If you can give me anymore tip for a 97 camry(4 cylinder automatic), I'd greatly appreciate it! Thanks!

  • Hey scotty, im going to change the coolant in my 4.0 Grand Cherokee as its way overdue, and i was going to use some engine flush cleaner. I've seen video's where they say to flush with a cleaner and waterhose and drain it. Fill it with water let it run and drain it one more time.. Then pour a 50/50 mix of antifreeze in the system.. My question tho is how much "Mineral" water from the tap water is left in the system and wouldnt that hurt it ? And also mess up the 50/50 ratio..

  • @1ownjoo2 Yes, it's hard to get a correct 50 50 ratio of coolant to water that way. Most guys use a flush machine, OR blow the block out with compressed air so nothing's left inside. But you have to remove the thermostat to do that, that's why most guys pay a mechanic to do the job with his 1700 dollar machine. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer Well i changed it just now, drained it, pulled the intake hose off the rad and shoved the hose in the fill cover and let it spill out of the radiator intake until it was clear. Then put the hose back on and the plug, and filled the rad with water and ran the engine until it was idle temp. Drained it , took the reserv off and cleaned it. Filled the rad and res with the 50.50 i mixed. Let it run idle, drove it.. Reservoir was empty, so i filled it with a 60/40. Took about 3g

  • @scottykilmer (continued) the whole process of refilling it took around 3 gallons a little less. The capacity of the system is 3 gallons. So thats why I did a 60/40 in the reservoir. So itll mix with the water left over which according to the amounts i filled was about half a gallon. So thats 60/40 in the reservoir should make it all around a 50/50 mix i hope . Am I right ?

Old coolant was brownish too, it looked clear, but once held side by side it looked like apple cider

  • Scotty loyal viewer here, i really enjoy all of your work thank you!! I have 02 explorer 4.6 v8 that the starter has gone bad in... do you have any advice for a diy person like me about installing the new starter? i have a socket set and some extensions will i need anything else....thank you very much! also have you done any of these explorers before? any particular problems or suggestions? Thanks scotty!!

  • @fatbradlehs Pretty simple job, just watch my other video on how to change out a starter. Yours is almost exactly the same as that vehicle. Scotty

  • How do you replace the water pump on a 1996 Kia Sportage.

  • @rbu2m same way u just gotta find the water pump on it

  • Shouldn't you replace the thermostat as well when replacing the water pump?

  • @03SilverMustangGT what hacker the thermostat in the replacement of the water pump !?!! Do you want to lose more money !? :-)

  • hey scotty nice videos :) my dad's a6, 1 year ago or so, during a big trip, on the last 3 hours, the check engine light came on. we were like whats that mean?. we drove the last 3 hours, and on the next day, the light was off, still didnt come on after 1 year, what do you think it could have been and if there is any danger?

  • "Wasn't that bad, was it?"

    I lol'd. Love it!

  • shouldn't you put coolant in the car first before you start it?

  • @superfootdan Doesn't matter, you can pour some in first if you want, or pour it all in while the engine is running. It won't hurt anylthing either way. Scotty Kilmer

  • @scottykilmer Hey thanks for the reply!

  • do i have to open the sml valve by the engine area on some vehicle to get the air out the cooling system

  • @hp11208 You can open the bleeder valves to get air out. but be careful not to break them off. Scotty

  • Very good point to point out to people about cleaning off the old gasket on the engine before putting the new one one. The cleaner the better :- ) Something so simple could cost you in the long run if you don't take the time to do it right the first time. Thanks for the vid Scotty!

  • Do you put gasket paste on both sides of the gasket on the new gasket Thanks Ian

  • @sandydogy Yes, you can put it on both sides, but let it dry on the pump first, then put it on the gasket already dried on the pump and quick put the pump on the engine then. Scotty Kilmer

  • This guy is great ;)

    Thanks for the useful vids!

  • I would just plug that weep hole

  • @sbaker3232 That would be a big No No. The weep hole is there to relieve pressure from a leaking pump seal. You plug it up, the pump will eventually blow the pulley and knock a BIG hole in the radiator. Scotty Kilmer

  • Some vehicles require thread sealant on the water pump bolts, such as small block chevys which tap into water ports. If you don't, you'll be rewarded with leaks past the threads and get to do it again. Cars with blind holes don't need thread sealant. As as precaution though, if you are unsure of what you're working on, use thread sealant anyway.

  • @TranceScene Yes, but the mercedes I was working on is full of blind holes, no through bolts, a better design. If you are worried when working on a car, watch the bolt holes as the bolts come out, and if water starts coming out the hole when you remove the bolt, put sealer on the bolt before installing the new pump. Scotty Kilmer

  • how do u change the water pump when this burried in the back of the engine?

  • @Matthew55904 You just have to take more stuff of to access it. They hide them all over the place in modern cars, some even use electrical pumps. Scotty Kilmer

  • @scottykilmer all i know is my water pump is in the back of the engine and is driven by the timing belt

  • @Matthew55904 Yep, and you have to take the timing belt and all off to change it. Many japanese cars are like that. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer mines korean i need a new timing belt as you know i have 2 questions 1 is it possible to convert it to a timing CHAIN and 2 do i HAVE to replace the tentioners pullys and the water pump when its replace the water pump has no problem so i dont see the need to replace it and do tentioners and pullys ever go bad?

  • @Matthew55904 No , you can't change it out. And you need to check the pump and the tensioner and other pulleys for wear. Replace them if they are worn or if you have very high mileage. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer well at 39867 miles would the water pump need changing?

  • @Matthew55904 It should last a LOT longer than that. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer so until the engine overheats i shouldnt replace it? should i replace the timing pullys and tentioners too or is that also too soon?

  • @Matthew55904 That's too soon. Only replace the pump when it starts either leaking or making noise. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer what kind of noise would it make?

  • @Matthew55904 A rattly metallic sound. Scotty Kilmer

  • @scottykilmer well i have noticed my car makes a hissing like sound (like air is escaping for the tire) when its started up used to only be heard from the back of the car but no u can hear it from all side i dont know if its and exhaust leak or just the fuel pump

  • not so easy on a 4 cyl with a timing belt lol

  • its a lil differnt for a doge ram.. u need a fan wrench lol

  • @kenmanuknow If you look close, you'll see that mercedes has a screw on the end of the pump too, but nothing is connected to it. They used to use mechanical fans, but no longer, they just left the screw on the pump. Scotty Kilmer

  • You're the best!

  • awesome. i just changed the waterpump of my citroen zx last week. it was that easy. the only difference is that it is driven by the timing belt. took me no more than 1 and a half hour to do it.

  • I love your video's! I also have a question been thinking about trying too change the TIMING CHAING ON MY 98 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE LAREDO. How hard is that todo and should i also change the water pump while am at it ?

  • @loco0351 Changing that timing chain is a pretty complex job, but it has nothing to do with the water pump so I wouldn't bother unless the pump is leaking. If you have the tools and don't mind getting dirty, I'd advise getting a book to make sure you do it right and line up the marks correctly., Scotty Kilmer

  • awesome :D!
