  • I can vaguely recall this programme, Mrs Mack the gossip, Davie Sneddon and Inverdarroch are the characters I remember the most, was it Isabelle in the corner shop who was dating the Welsh builder? If I remember the show became a bit modernised and lost a lot of its charm, I see STV are uploading episodes now.

  • @Davegy1

Like any countryside based serial, They were forced to get with the times. Plus with a new decade looming, they needed to update the theme song as everyone else was doing. The 1990 theme will always resonate with me as I was a kid and I remember my aunt leaving the show on in the background while she did housework when she babysat me.

Based on all accounts a number of the early characters stuck around for Donkey's years.

  • I so miss Take the High Road (I refuse to call it 'High Road'). I remember my shock as a 10 year-old when this rather sweet gentle music turned all RAWK with guitars and the like. Bring back Mrs Mack!

  • Down south they must have watched this and thought "My God, the Scots are a miserable bunch aren't they?"

  • @Harr123

I lived in the Border ITV region and this was shown at 7.30. However, except for a few grannies, everyone else was watching Eastenders.

Actually, there was a shitstorm when it was given the boot down in a number of southern regions in the mid-90s and there was a big fat fight to keep it on the air even though it was primarily a day time serial (something to watch after H&A but before CITV).

  • lived in balloch about 15 year ago... closest i got to luss hahahaha

  • I used to live in Alexandria and worked in luss for the National Park as a Ranger.

  • God I adored Take the High Road, Davy Sneddon being a special fave. The went on to marry a Scot lol

  • me and my mum were addicted to this and the final year of the show RTE Irl switched around when the episodes were on each week it was hard to find it :( was one of the best soaps ever much better than river city

  • Does anyone have a video of the 1984/85 version of the theme tune? This is one of my favourite pieces of music ever. Also can anyone tell me if it is available on CD, either the 1985 version or this one?

  • The 1984/85 version of the theme tune was used from 1982-86 and this one was used from 1986-90.

  • Did the 1982-86 closing theme start slowly (like the opening edit of this theme) on the cor anglais?

  • So far I have very much enjoyed the very first version and this one. Please tell me how many different types of the tune there were

  • There was 4 versions of the theme tune. The first one was used from 1980-02, the second was 1982-86, this one 1986-90 and the fourth one was used from 1990-2003.

  • Thanks for this info. Will let you know which I prefer when I get the chance to study them.

  • Hi, can't seem to find the second version on utube. Is it there?

  • @Inverdarroch88 A mistake there you meant to say 1980-82.

  • This is the end credits edit of the third theme tune. I've yet to hear the end credits edit of the second theme tune, used from 1982 - 1986.
