As Glenn Gould said, piano really is the best instrument to play Bach. I play guitar mainly, but I still think you can't get the same levels of sophistication with counterpoint as you can with the piano. And that's why Bach didn't write the Goldberg Variations for the lute.
this guy is very humble and i liked that. ''i don't pretend to know what 's really going on''. he doesn't understand the complexity of the works he's playing (takes years of studying to comprehend Bach), but he likes it and that's more than enough for him. Exxellent i shall say :-)
Bach wasn't God....but he gave God the credit. One of his most famous lines is, "The aim and final end of all music should be none other than the glory of God and the refreshment of the soul."
There is a lot of truth in this video. Any improvising musician who decides to get their hands dirty and go through the arduous task of learning Bach compositions is doing themselves a huge artistic favor. I only thought I was a good improviser until I played Bach. I then realized that this man was a level beyond anyone dead or alive.
"I am like a folk musician who got a bit out of control".... now that is humbling from someone who must be one of the most gifted musicians on the planet.
Yeah, not kiddin', huh? Fleck mind numbingly talented...though it's a funny line, "folk musician who got a bit out of control." Like saying Einstein was just an uppity patent clerk!
For those studying a music degree and watching this. it makes all the sense in the world. When you dissect Bach, you only find perfection to its highest degree!
Nice footage of Bela's great technique BUT...if one is to go to all the trouble of making a film like this; the footage of people playing could and SHOULD be the same. i.e. not playing music and audio together of different sections as they do.
Bach and Bela pay great attention to detail and so should the filmmaker/editor.

@CaramelMarshmallow He didn't write the Goldberg Variations for the piano either.
Changles 4 months ago
@Changles He wrote it for an instrument with a keyboard. Pianos have keyboards.
CaramelMarshmallow 4 months ago
@CaramelMarshmallow You are wrong. Pianos DO NOT have keyboards.
Changles 4 months ago
@Changles You have a messed piano then.
CaramelMarshmallow 4 months ago
@CaramelMarshmallow The correct term is pia-pia-piano.

he's right..playing bach is a bit like playing bebop jazz...bach would have been an awsome improviser of jazz if he was around in the 1940's

It is humbling to see someone I respect so much showing such awe. Certainly makes we want to go play some more Bach!

This comment has received too many negative votes show
It's like school children who have no interest in classical music until they hear it in a movie soundtrack. Then they've just got to have it.

Holy shit. Save it. Why all the hate to the brilliant musicians who have nothing to say but the best about Bach? There's nothing wrong here.
