Okay. Someone recommended that I listen to this. I said I wanted calm acoustic music with deep lyrics. What the hell is this. I hate this. Sorry. My opinion.
Im in the UK and the album edition of this song has a different opening. The story he tells is about two people telling a young child that she's going to a birthday party. It seems to make more sense in the version i have.
It's funny because when i first heard this song when it came out i didn't really like it as much. But now i love this song! I guess i didn't give it enough of a chance. As i did their other songs. I don't know what i was thinking.
I am rather disappointed-- more than I would have expected-- that find out that Conor Oberst doesn't seem to understand some basic physics. I am sad to learn that he really doesn't seem to understand how the world works as much I had thought.
I had an op a few years ago, that I had a possibility of not surviving and I thought: "Well, if I'm goin' I'm goin' down laughing." Anyway, to cut a long story....I nearly got thrown outta my own operation as myself and the theatre team were in stitches (pun not intended). Heck! I'm with this guy, if you gotta go, go out with a bang and a smile on your face!
i have honestly never cried because of a song like this. im am so glad i found this song because for the last 30 minutes ive been sitting here listening to it and cyring. its beautiful
@ercchrstpher, that's an interesting take - repentance...my friend and I were just discussing the meaning before I read your comment, we posited that it's about defying construct and rules. "we must memorize nine numbers/and deny we have a soul," I've always felt strongly that it speaks to going along with what we're supposed to do; the death celebration -- rather than panic or fear -- defies how we're "supposed to" react to our inevitable deaths. this song is important.
Mfw kids today don't know that Lost was originally an early 90's show directed by Sid and Marty Krofft (like how they didn't know that 90's Nickelodeon Land of the Lost was likewise a remake). I like the new version okay, but I can't get over them changing the Smoke Monster from white to black, I mean it just strikes me as racist.
This song is very beautiful; in fact, it gives me a lot of hope. I like to think of the airplane as a metaphor for life - we never know when we're going to crash, tomorrow isn't guaranteed. Hence, it's ideal to make the best out of the present.
I just saw this for the first time 30 minutes ago and since then have watched this 5 times in a row and I can't stop crying. For a long time a while ago I became very fearful of death, and now after seeing this it made me feel foolish. I love 1:16 - 1:30 because the old man is comforting her and maybe when they die a party is awaiting all of them, and they are going to be reborn and start with a clean slate. I'd like to believe that that is what death is all about.
This song makes me think, sure things are bad, death might be bad, but you should laugh at all those things and be glad in spite of them. Just ignore the end, and live only in now, because that's the only place we can live, right?
It's been a while since I first heard this... but this is the first Bright Eyes song I ever heard! Made me smile so big, and it's hard for music to impress me significantly. Since then they've become my favorite band. Let's see... 10 albums, 7 EPs, totaling to 159 songs.
I'm so grateful for the friend who suggested this song.
@iantbailey Really? It was one of my first songs I ever heard by them too! My dad was really into their music and so I always remembered the intro^^ Now I'm like obsessed and have (almost) every album haha.
@iPayton785 Oh my gosh I love that you said this, It COMPLETELY changed my thoughts on dying the first time I heard it, and it really just eased my mind.
holy shit speechless I remember listening to this for the first time when i was 13 (big fan of bright eyes back then) and not getting the point or meaning of this song, but damn. Im so glad I listened again
This song says to me.."make it what u will, make it what u can..either way, enjoy!!! its fast, its unpredictable...its so fast!!! and then its done...."
I think this song is about how death is really a new beginning. I think that it's saying the only way for us to live is to die. Suicide is the most natural thing we can do. If we do it selfishly we kill ourselves. If we do it unselfishly, we give our lives to God.
i sing this to myself....even repeating the story at the beginning. because the song doesn't sound right without the story....like you need the hand for a glove.
Can anyway say amazing? I can. Good god this is freaking mind blowing. When I listen to this song I feel like jumping up and down and yelling, "I'm in LOVE!" This song makes my heart skip a beat :) :)
I love this song. Even though it's actually an incredibly morbid song about a plane crash, it's so hopeful. Everyone's celebrating their lives and just being together, before they die. = ]
I had heard this song before but never listened to the beginning at all. It's 2 am, I'm finishing my math homework and i just got chills and started tearing up and smiling. I don't even know how to describe this moment.
