@droubs42 yeah... well, everybody hates their own voice, and I guess someone as depressed as Thom was during that period would feel rather extreme about it.
"Whats he talking about I love your voice Thom.. Ill trade you." Many competent singers dispise their voice even though they understand they are competent. Thoms voice is other worldly. He is very critical of himself and I think his self loathing attitude is what gives Radiohead their ability to be something special and different than all the other "mopey" bands out there.
He says that the computer is a great cheat tool, and he gets away with it, because if anybody ever saw the video 'Scotch Mist' when they played their new 'In Rainbows' album will see that all of them are sheer gut sloggers (hard workers) to get their music right. Just watching Phil Selway continuously drumming out this incessant rhythm on 'weird fishes' made my eyes water for the man.
@cobainbullet182 I don't think he so much *hates* his own voice, but rather, he hated hearing all the "copycat" artists (not even going there!) who sprung up on the airwaves at the turn of the millenium.

Who might think that after The Bends and Ok Computer they will be able to create such a master piece? Totally different in sound, and the atmospheare that create this record it´s unbelievable. I know that they usually say that they don´t want to repet "the formula" in their nexts albums, but, wow, besides any taste, Kid A, personally, is THE gem in music.
I think Kid A is the point when I noticed that Radiohead is not just great band, it´s incredible amazing, the evolution of this band has no comparision with any other.
Well, It's been a month since my last comment and I can easily say that I now actively listen to Radiohead. But, I can only do so if I listen to the albums all the way through. Specifically Kid A. ^_____^
I recognize the many ways in which Radiohead's latter albums are significant and advanced. But, I still have trouble actively listening to ambient, less 'structured' music. It just hasn't fully appealed to me yet. I have yet to get chills from Kid A like I get when I listen to classical. It's grown tremendously on me over the past month, though. =]
I understand fully what you're saying. Radiohead definitely requires a second listen in most cases. I thought they were trash at first, just another alt rock band with cool sounds. But over time it becomes so personal, as if your emotions and theirs fully intertwine.
@dopejoel I think after repeated listening it sinks deeper and deeper. For me, songs like "Everything in its Right Place," "Kid A," and "National Anthem" were gateway songs that were more immediately accessible. It wasn't until later after continuous listening that the brilliance of songs like "In Limbo" and "How to Disappear Completely" really became manifest to me.

@dopejoel Yeah I understand what you mean it takes me ages to get into ambient electronica stuff or just weird strange music and then sometimes in the end I get so bored of trying to get into it I give up on it and then I come back to it like a few months later and I love it.
@23lFrench Yeah, man. Recently, I've been listening to a lot of Aphex Twin, Steve Reich and Dj Shadow. Minimalism and ambient has really grown on me since I posted that comment. Especially Kid A ^________^ Rock, in most of its current variations, has become so mundane for me to listen to. So, this kind of music because its new to me, is very sobering. It doesn't remind me of anything. I like that.
@dopejoel yeah I like Dj shadow, private press and entroducing are two amazing albums, I also listen to a bit of aphex twin along with some post-rock its all good!
Do you think he wears contacts normally? :O I've only got one picture of him with glasses on, and it looked more like a silly sort of thing, but now that I've seen this video I think he might be vision-impaired. how cute<3
it seems to be a guitar large note, but it's not, and it sounds like a violin too, but it's not. It's in all the song since from thom beggins to sing.(maybe I wrote with a lot of mistakes :S, sorry, my english is bad). And in this song it sounds quite softly, not as in pyramid song
well, they dont use a real ondes martenot live, they use a modular with a controller that imitates the ondes martenot way of playing (Analogue Systems French Connection), so he might use different patches for each song, but i am sure that in how to disappear jonny plays the keynote through out all the song until the end when ed and him start to play simultaneously while thom follows with his voice, ed with an ebow and jonny with the French Connection...
he said in an interview that he hates how pretty his voice sounds...that what he's saying may come off sounding polite when he's singing about something particularly 'acidic'
This guy is so full of himself, he's the Michael Jackson of the "alternative" generation.

i ADORE the 'National Anthem' (probably one of my favourites) yet the first time i heard it, i had to take it off midway, because it scared me so much hahaha
Although not my favourite rh song, the national anthem is probably their best song. Forget what Thom thinks, National Anthem is better than How to disappear.
the thing i just love about this album is that while the music is beautiful and dreamy, a lot of the lyrics and art/poetry associated with the album are haunting. disquieting, you know? things like absolute conformity, insanity, depression. its like a comforting nightmare if that makes any sense. like, listen to How to Disappear completely.
there are only a few albums out there that i can listen my full way through without skipping a song and Kid A was the first i was able to do that with. love to radiohead
He uses a portable radio at the beginning and takes samples. Then he samples Thom's voice while he's singing and puts that onto a Korg Kaoss Pad, he then minipulates that by randomly moving his finger around and changing the settings and filters.
I know her name sounds like it could be Korean, but look up her biography anywhere and it will tell you she's Chinese-Canadian. They may have just spelt Li as Lee. (If you want to go further, "Yin" is a strange way to spell a Korean name as well...)
I was merely correcting something I knew for sure to be false information. I know it's hard to read people over the internet, but I wasn't offended. In any case, I like Dave Chappelle so I'll keep it in mind to check that out.
All you people that are making fun of sook are just jealous cunts.Even thought she was joking she was jamming with thom now how many of us can say that?.
stop hating on the girl, people. she's a bit goofy, but it obviously helped to loosen Thom up, as this is one of the better interviews with him i've seen. compare this to the Reflections on Kid A documentary from the same year, where Thom looks like he's about to cry or throw a fit at any minute.
naahh the best interviewer was the beautiful babe from germany.. it was almost as if they were flirting by the end of it

god she's such a superficial interviewer..she's korean aha neways this cud do much better T.T.........
ljm531 4 years ago
Sook Yin isn't Korean, she's Chinese.
smallambulance 2 years ago
no offence and im not a fan of the interviewer but there's no chinese last name like Lee and def. no first name like sook yin lol c:
ljm531 2 years ago
I know her name sounds like it could be Korean, but look up her biography anywhere and it will tell you she's Chinese-Canadian. They may have just spelt Li as Lee. (If you want to go further, "Yin" is a strange way to spell a Korean name as well...)

I really think you should watch Dave Chappelle in "For What Its Worth". He mentions mistakes like this and the way people get offended by them.
LFCliid 2 years ago
I was merely correcting something I knew for sure to be false information. I know it's hard to read people over the internet, but I wasn't offended. In any case, I like Dave Chappelle so I'll keep it in mind to check that out.

Every time I hear a Radiohead song I get to appreciate the sound or the lyrics on a different level. That is such a masterful gift to humanity.

Sook Yin Lee is great fun and has taste in music, so you people need to pipe down, Kid A is also a classic.

All you people that are making fun of sook are just jealous cunts.Even thought she was joking she was jamming with thom now how many of us can say that?.

oh yeah
'Reflections'.... so very uncomfortable
icantfindanamethis 4 years ago
stop hating on the girl, people. she's a bit goofy, but it obviously helped to loosen Thom up, as this is one of the better interviews with him i've seen. compare this to the Reflections on Kid A documentary from the same year, where Thom looks like he's about to cry or throw a fit at any minute.

happyhysterical 4 years ago
Yeah where is this?
annalina111 4 years ago
i actually think that it's sook-yin's house now. can anyone confirm this? :/
happyhysterical 4 years ago
Yeah, it's her house. She's got photos of it on her myspace and her saying "me in my garden". Also she's filmed in it for MuchMusic pieces before.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
thom was very forgiving of this idiot. she is the worst interviewer i've ever seen.
