Dropped on to this after listening to neil Young. Never been a big country fan so have not heard of this singer before today I am sorry to say...Great track well sang...This guy is deserving of more recognition in my book
when I was about 13 I listened to his records on the radio and after 53 years I still know almost every word of the lyrics of his songs, Bobby remains one of my great favs. and to many other real music lovers. thanks everybody for posting them!
thanks to You Tube too !!! in the midnight hours when I listen to Bobby on You Tube I feel 13 again!

This song was written by the great Canadian songwriter, Ian Tyson. Ian also wrote, "Someday Soon", of which the most popular recording was recorded by Judy Collins. But as gifted as Ian was (and is), other people always seem to do better with his songs than he does.
I'm 19, and the first time I heard this song was when my mom & I were listening to her collection of classic country CDs. When we went on a road trip to see my grandmother, we decided to listen to the CDs in the car. When I heard this song, I had to keep replaying it, because it was so catchy. During the trip, we listened to this song several times. This is a great version.
Each of us have a song or two that we sing to ourselves, that we don't share with anyone else. This is one of the ones that my heart sings when I'm alone.
A stone classic! Legend has it that when Neil Young first herd this on a jukebox, way back in the day, it made him shudder and it sent a chill up his spine, and he just knew that he would have to cover this song. The words and the music just "spoke" to him and you can just hear the strong influence of this song on his own country ballad style, when he's not rock and rollin'. Listen to Neils version and you will hear what I mean.
@RossM3838 ian tysons brother was in our security squadron in Vietnam in 1966... sure would like to contact him. Never understood why a Canadian was with us. but you gott love him for what he did!!
I love this song they dont record songs like this anymore.
Also I know this a very long shot but maybe one of you guys can help with a song that I hear back in the 80's it says something like "someone is crying and we all know why" I don't remember the rest i know is country. If die before I hear that song I probably will come back to search for it. Help please!
Heard this song for the first time while living in Columbus, Georgia in the fall of 1964. Nearby Ft. Benning was bursting with troops preparing for war in Vietnam and this song was a lonesome tune for GI's away from home for the first time. Made an impression on me---a 19 year facing the world.
I was so in love with a girl but i really got one!! I made a choice and it was very difficult!! Well...four strong winds keep me back, but they loose!!
Maybe a silly question, but was this record produced by Chet Atkins? And, is that The Anita Kerr Singers backing Bobby up on that record? Sounds fantastic.
For the last 40 years I've only been familiar with the Ian and Sylvia version of this song (although I have heard Neil Young do it, too) This is a nice version.
i was 20 yrs young when this song began air play. also was big on all the local juke boxes. made me think a lot about moving on. guess what, i am still here. 44 years later. if you have it on mind about leaving and are still young. do it soon, or you never will.
Post a note linking the song to a seller of the album and you'll have better luck... make it an ad... that's what i do and i've had success that way...
@szerszamos Hi, thanks for that. Yes I'm very impressed with Neil Young's version, to the point of making it a favourite. Ian Tyson the guy who wrote it. It was first recorded by the brothers four, and then by Ian Tyson and later by lots. Bobby Bare's is my favourite, though Neil Young's 1978 version is a very close second.
I got hooked on Bobby Bare after hearing "Four Strong Winds" and have been a fan ever since. He is a "library" of great songs and a style uniquely his. Thanks so much for sharing this song.
Anyway! A beautful song that I've allways loved since I were young;o) Bobby is great and I have been so lucky to observe him live in consert in Norway 3 times!!:-)
Real country music here. Now, there's maybe 1% of so called country music that is actually country. 99% is Country Lite. Even those so called country stars think they are actually singing country music . We all know who they are.
Actually a Folk song written by Ian & Sylvia Tyson in the 60s recorded by the Brothers Four in 1963, by Bobby in 1964, by Neil Young in 1978, but also by John Denver, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, Joan Baez and many others. I am a fan of Bobby, a fellow hillbilly, picked for years with his kin, but some of the others versions are also great.
SO!! WilburScott says, ".......one hell of a song". Nobody could put it any better. It IS one hell of a song. Thanks for a great post and maybe it'll stay up a while.
Whenever I hear this wonderful song, it takes me back to nights around the cottage camp-fire - a guitar, a little harp, soft voices, and reflection.....
This is a great version...However, it was posted by a couple others in the past, and was removed by Youtube because of copyrights.. ...I hope you have better luck..Until then...I and others will enjoy it...Thanks...
