I'm 19, and the first time I heard this song was when my mom & I were listening to her collection of classic country CDs. When we went on a road trip to see my grandmother, we decided to listen to the CDs in the car. When I heard this song, I had to keep replaying it, because it was so catchy. During the trip, we listened to this song several times. This is a great version.

A stone classic! Legend has it that when Neil Young first herd this on a jukebox, way back in the day, it made him shudder and it sent a chill up his spine, and he just knew that he would have to cover this song. The words and the music just "spoke" to him and you can just hear the strong influence of this song on his own country ballad style, when he's not rock and rollin'. Listen to Neils version and you will hear what I mean.

Heard this song for the first time while living in Columbus, Georgia in the fall of 1964. Nearby Ft. Benning was bursting with troops preparing for war in Vietnam and this song was a lonesome tune for GI's away from home for the first time. Made an impression on me---a 19 year facing the world.

It was first recorded by the brothers four, and then by Ian Tyson and later by lots. Bobby Bare's is my favourite, though Neil Young's 1978 version is a very close second.

Actually a Folk song written by Ian & Sylvia Tyson in the 60s recorded by the Brothers Four in 1963, by Bobby in 1964, by Neil Young in 1978, but also by John Denver, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, Joan Baez and many others. I am a fan of Bobby, a fellow hillbilly, picked for years with his kin, but some of the others versions are also great.
