  • Cool video. Could you tell me the name of the song please?

  • @vinemachine it's by the Chameleons entitled "Thursday's Child" from their first CD / LP "Script Of The Bridge"

  • the s117 route , i am friggin old, staten island got ruined long ago, I was 10 at the time of this video seems like ancient history

  • @gerard321111 - Thanks! Ive been trying to remember that name for years. As for Mt Loretto - every summer, the church I went to used to have them as guests for a Sunday. I went to New Dorp Baptist Church n Rose Avenue and 10th Street, obviously in New Dorp.

  • i wish somone had a video of eltingville in the 80s, with the scrap yard i remember as one of my earliest life memories

  • Incredible video. My dad told me stories about when Staten Island was like this. Now as a 23 year old I get a much different Island

  • Fun fact, the church, Mt. Loretto was featured in the film "The Godfather". It was the church where Micheal becomes godfather to his nephew. If you look closely u might recognize it.

  • Funny thing, the first few seconds of this video, which is hylan between bay terrace and kegans lane if I'm not mistaken, looks exactly the same. Other than the old cars of course lol.

  • @marknarra that's the orphanage. I'm not sure what the condition was at this point in time, but when I was a child (early 90s) it was completely gutted. No back wall, no insides at all. Just a shell. It was demolished somewhere around 2000.

  • Cool video, thank you for sharing it.

  • Ahh there's the Staten Island I grew up in... Its a zoo now... The building of the Verrazano destroyed that Island. Its a mini Brooklyn now..

  • Whoa...didn't expect to hear a Chameleons song here....one of my favorite bands ever.

  • Anybody remember the terrible smell from the dump across from the mall? Especially during the summer. And what was the name of that ice cream restaurant right inside the front entrance of the mall during the 80s?

  • @stephenmattice1 It was named Farrell's!

  • @stephenmattice1 It was named Farrells!

  • I lived in Staten Island during the 70s and 80s. Moved away in 1990. Wow. What an excellent video. I lived in the Sleepy Hollow area of New Springville, then Annadale, and spent a short time in St. George. Please post more of these.

  • @revup67 nice!

  • @revup67 very nice! Do you still have it?

  • @Monteguy88 - nope long gone..67 GTO ragtop now

  • @revup67 it is completely built up and there are about 16 traffic lights between sharrots and the conference house. Btw, I couldn't help but notice the car you're driving. Seems to be a 70-72 GM A body convertible. Is it a Chevelle or a Cutlass or something?

  • @Monteguy88 - you are right 1971 chevelle convertible

  • Great video. Other than the orphanage being gone and the CYO center being built, mt. Loretto looks pretty much the same. I live in tottenville I wish your video would show my neck of the woods. Bet there weren't any houses by conference house park in '83

  • @Monteguy88 actually to the best of my recollection you are correct - no houses near the Conference House. I could only imagine what it is like now

  • @Monteguy88 is that what that big red building is around the 2:20 mark? anyone know the name of it?

  • wow, i wish staten island looked like this still. wish i could have lived to experience how it used to be, instead i'm 18 and living in the pot hole infested shit hole it is today. i take hylan almost everyday and the comparison is just astonishing

  • @gisenberg - I moved there in 1966 you should ave seen it then - if you think my 1983 video looks good, the place was paradise back in the 60's Richmond Parkway was one lane in each direction. There's was no SI Mall - hard too imagine. Thanks for the comment

  • I wish i grew up in this staten island. Instead im forced to grow up in this shit hole

  • @mrpayperview318 - I know I was there a few years ago - pathetic. I moved to SI in 1966 and it was paradise I slowly wtach it become the shit hole you talk of. As my unbcle said: "Last Man Out Take The Flag"

  • My mother used to threaten to drop me off at Mt Loretto when she wanted to shut me up. The good old days!

  • whoah

  • oh wow i went to school at the ps1 annex on mt lorreto the year it burnt down and used see that building everyday, its a shame, its too bad the shouth shore had to get so overdeveloped and shitty =/

  • whoa, chameleons. wasn't expecting that. =D

  • @MaxExactly - yeah I know - I was heavily into that band from 82or3 to 88 - got to see them at the Ritz in NY - I think it was the same night their manager got killed - they disbanded shortly thereafter

  • it was a place for kids who had no homes it was two schools and then they where burned down my old college professor used to teach there

  • what was that massive building across from mt loretta

    i never seen that b4

  • that was the church were they shoot the film the godfather..?

  • Thanks so much for posting that. Brings back memories at grandma place on the south shore, Lorretto Street and Hylan Blvd. Wonderful memories of actual woods and the beach. Thanks!

  • Hi there. Thank you so much for putting this up here. I used to spend summers at my grandma's place on Lorretto Street off Hylan Blvd in Tottenville. This struck a real cord. Is that Mt St Lorretto ? I rememer the pool off Juline Ave. You really brought back some touching memories for me of the South Shore before its massive development. Thank you so much for the trip!

  • The camera stops right before they get to the Peghi House @ 3747 Hylan Blvd at 0:32.

  • i think its better now

  • man i just showed my dad that i was very young

  • does know what happened to annadale in 1983 or on street called eagan ave

  • what happend there?

  • That was really cool. It's also a little sad. That is a Staten Island that no longer exists. Please keep posting your videos.

  • dude this is some cool footage, its great to see stuff like this. i just showed my mom she remembers the mount lorreto building.

  • thanks for the comments - I recall that day so well - can't believe it was almost 26 years ago - I've posted more on Staten Island from that time frame on this site with more to come.

  • every day i drive to school now, i look and i cant picture the building there its crazy.

  • if you want to heighten the effects in your mind even further you shoud play this song in your car on the way to school..that would be incredible

if you email me here at itunes I can get you the track for your Ipod/ Itunes

  • no thanks i dont even have itubes anymore i had all my music on my old laptop that broke and im to lazy to update this computer. thanks anyways tho. I seen your other videos of arthur kill road i believe that that school is still there ps4, and also it pt2 you show those old tanks and all that land is all cleared out, now its all overgrown. its kinda cool to go back there but i have yet to climb the tanks.
