hey dankone2008 - this song was written well after some his first solo music. RP is not concerned with such petty BS, as getting away from Zep. Paige has remained his friend throughout their separation, and still does. Those guys spent a good portion of their formative years together and made tons of $. Those memories never fade. RP does not dismiss former mates in such a fashion.
LOVE ROBERT PLANT!! When he made this...I immediately went out and bought it... and fell in love... I know alot of people really didnt care for his solo career... open ur minds folks.... there was music after Zeppelin... dont get me wrong LOVED Zeppelin.. but im not limited only to them when it comes to Plant.
I always thought it was about the long grief he suffered after the death of his little boy. I once remember him being questioned about this in an interview (many years afterwards) and had he come to terms with the lose.
He answered that he could never come to terms with it but little by little he could move on...kinda stuck with me until I heard the song.
This is not Phil Collins on drums. It's still Ritchie Hayward kicking ass on one of the coolest rock drum tracks ever. They've just turned the snare and hi-hat up in the mix, toms and cymbals down, and added some reverb. The "extra" notes were either mixed in later, or mixed out for the standard version. Listen to the hi-hat and splash flourishes, the very slight increase in tempo in the intro, and the signature fills at 2:40 and 3:50. Phil Collins is a good drummer, but this isn't his style.
I love this song this and big log and his best ever, brings back good times of living in Rapid City South Dakota, hearing his songs on Q92.3FM while driving down I-90!
i thought this song was also about losing bonham with the lyrics litte by little the air clears the day passes by and he chants in a mentally disarrayed hurting way " i can breath again na"i can breath again NA
i've been into plant since i was around six, because i grew up with his music-my dad was a huge fan and i'm just grateful that i'm still a fan because plant is an amazing solo artist
You've done a nice job of editing the video, but I'm having difficulty warming up to the remix of the song.
It seems as if everything that made the original version so memorable (to me at least): the succinct drumming, the tight rhythmic structure of the keyboards, the natural dynamics of Plants singing, etc is either lost or confused on this.
Thanks for posting the long version of this. Surprisingly, XM/Sirius is playing Big Log relatively often on the Led Zep station - but I don't hear this. This song converted me to major Robert Plant fandom. Beautiful. Haunting. Thank you for putting it up.
I have a different take than most on this song. This has universal meaning, but I personally think he is speaking of starting a new life and career and moving away from his former life with Led Zeppelin and the loss of his dear friend John Bonham. I think he is expressing that he felt boxed in with Led Zeppelin and forced to be a person that he no longer was suffocating from the demands of fans and the band. He moved on far enough at this point to start making music and writing again.
this song may be based on the loss of a relationship but the imagery with the greys/blues, the cemetery, even the song's emotions make it universal. it's a wonderful song for someone coming out of grief of any kind. no coincidence that i woke up with this in mind after seeing his concert b/c i'm just getting back to feeling like myself after losing 4 loved ones in 1 1/2 years. to people who say music in the 80s was thoughtful, ditto. glad i was around for it and can refer back as i get older...
wondering DaveRFuller if you can post the original video too. i like what you've done and at the same time want to see it. i just saw him in concert and though he's moved on, it just takes me back to the last time i saw him in 88. he's so wonderful!
Man.......music and videos used to not only be SOOOO much better than they are now, but they actually put some effort, artistry, and meaning in the videos. Thanks for sharing this.
Back when videos were cool and had something to do with the song; many different levels - you could find the meaning, or, just take in the a/v for entertainment's sake. Good stuff!
He and Alison Krauss are going to be touring all around the US and Europe promoting their album, Raising Sand. Their first gig, I think, is in New Orleans at the New Orleans Heritage and Jazz Festival really soon. There are several videos on youtube of the songs on that album.
Thanks for posting that interesting video. Visually gorgeous. Blurring of the gender roles. Marriage. Someone passing through the marriage party. I wonder what it all means?
The song, I believe, is written about an unusually difficult break up.. "Little by little..I can breathe again" Someone passing through the wedding party could be a referance to an interferance in the marriage...the bride being white, blending into the background, means she is no longer there...blurred gender roles, is related to the fact that it could happen to anyone
Wow! That was a great analysis. I love to talk about songs and their meanings. If you have time or an interest, check out my channel, maybe we can talk more. Have a great day!
thank you..I also like to talk about music and try to figure out why sondg were sung...Robert Plant is famous for putting double meaning into all of his music...See Big Log..post a comment and let me know what you think..your channel??..I am afraid that I am a little ignorant when it comes to You Tube but we can chat about Music anytime!

Why is this so much better than the whining emotional dreck on today's charts?
chickensandwich77 3 years ago 10
It made the rock charts as number one in 1985 for two weeks.
Now you got some good songs on there, and then some very horrible screamo-metal music, which isn't music
towcar68 3 years ago
@chickensandwich77 Robert Plant is why the music industry has suffered for quite awhile if you ask me . Great comment BTW

@chickensandwich77 Robert Plant is a REAL musician and real musicians want to play with him. Todays music with few exceptions sucks.
