Well this comment may not get much agreement but as far as genesis were concerned I missed the sound of Steve more than the sound of Peter when they left, superb version of Everyday too !!
hey i live just in 30 km's from Montreux "so gallant" riviera... this precious kind of things are not my kind... but well there's inspired artitsts goin' there every year.... This year is a quite sad turnin' point for the festival...
The man behind the selection of alternative pop/rock music has just left the direction...without substitute... so they Montreux Jazz became a little less rock n roll from this year.... it's over for the Music or the Bees and others of the same kind...
I saw him on this tour, at Park West in Chicago. Still have lots of pictures I took. Excellent one of a kind concert that still stays with me. So much innovation here!
If you look just behind him, you can see his Roland GR-500 guitar synthesizer that he used on one song.
I love this song and as far as I am concerned Spectral Mornings is the best album he ever did. However the subject of this song doesn't match the music. I am guessing he did that on purpose. It sounds like a happy song but is about his ex gf dying from drugs.
I never really cared for the first half of the song. The vocals are lame (like almost all Steve Hackett vocals) and the melody is child-like in it's simplicity.
In contrast, the second half of the song is everything I love about Steve Hackett: melodic, sustaining guitar parts played over an atmospheric keyboard background.
I have the same praise and criticism of the the band Camel. They sound much better when they stop singing and just jam.
I suggest you listen to Andy Latimer of Camel as well - he's another guitarist who, like Hackett, makes the (so called) "best guitarists" seem quite ordinary. Both are true virtuosos.
@tonythekingfisher and in this video steve looks identical to andy latimer to the point that for the first minute i thought "WOW ANDY LATIMER AND STEVE HACKETT ON STAGE TOGETHER"
I am a woman and have loved Steve Hackett's solo work since he left Genesis. He had to leave because he was creating something new and it was glorious. . I love them both but my heart is with Steve. Defector is a truly amazing album.
without a doubt one of the best guitar players the world has ever seen, and i haven't found someone who took out the sound of a custom gold top Gibson in such a good way. definitely Genesis isn't what it used to be, when he was still there. Mike is great and all, and Daryl is just as good but Hackett has them both beated.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
prog rock just fell out of vogue all togeather-- every "progressive rock band" changed at that time or ceased to exist ( as is the case of the greatest prog band of all time Gentle Giant) Genesis and Yes simply morphed into the times. True Progressive rock was DEAD in the 80's. Had nothing to do with Steve Hackett leaving Genesis. I think this song stinks. Crap from people like Steve Hackett and Rick Wakeman is why prog rock died, ego, these guys had no idea why their old bands were great.
i hope ure not basing all of steve hacketts music on this one song have u never heard the album "please don't touch" its full of progressive music so much of his music is
Yeah and u know .. its hard when theres a bunch of guys in a band like Genesis were ..all geniuses .. too many cooks in the kitchen kind of thing-was the syndrome they faced was all..And with Peter too .. I think when theres less guys in the band -trios- in particular theres more room for everyones ideas.. Of course Police were an exception cause Sting was so egotistical!( as talented as he always has been) nevertheless .. Steve Hackett is an unsung hero of guitar :-)
sonicksyn: I don't agree. I think prog rock was killed by a concerted effort by the "music industry." They could see that this music was just too good for your average tone-deaf dickhead on the street and record sales would suffer accordingly. What they wanted was something simple, catchy, beaty, requiring little talent - & they got it - punk, rap & all the rest of the shit that was promoted. Appeals to a wider (dumbed down) audience - MORE MONEY!!
To paraphrase Phil Collins: "The only people that came to Genesis concerts in the 70's were young male students wearing funny hats. We wanted to make our music more accessible and appeal to the girls as well." So it was dumbed down. Q.E.D.
How I agree with the comments below - Steve is the true keeper of the Genesis flame a guitarist's guitarist and a contributor of all that was special about 70's Genesis - his departure was a greater loss to the band than peter.
@golkaynaf I agree completely. If you listen to Genesis before and after Steve Hackett, you can easily tell the difference. The real "Genesis sound" came with and left with Hackett.
Bravo! The true spirit and essence of classic Genesis lived on with Steve Hackett. This is beautiful, pastoral, intelligent, moving and highly melodic. All the elements that made Genesis so good in the seventies. What this doesn't need to rely on is a singer in a flat cap doing his Cor Blimey Guvnor routine and serenading some fucking bird or doing a silly dance with his two excruciatingly embarrased looking bandmates. Thank Christ for Steven Hackett!
Oh,.....It's a real Time Machine.....EVERY DAY I listen to this song it takes me back in time more than any other song ever, in Summer 1980......I close my eyes and I AM THERE!!!!!!
Fantastic, truly fantastic. Don't think there is a day goes by I don't wish that Hackett rejoins Genesis to work his magic and make another great album. After Wind and Wuthering, nothing truly was the same...
Steve was initially a fan of Fripp and Crimson, not to mention Jeff Beck.Add some classical and some jazz inflections in the mix and the rest is all Hackett.A player who has always evoked an otherworldliness and spirituality, still exciting to this day.
A solo of the same caliber as Moonlit Knight, Firth of Fifth, Ripples. He is the greatest guitarist you never heard of and maybe never heard at all because he was tragically buried in the mix while with Genesis or making sounds so strange we thought they must have been a keyboard. One of his best solo songs. And you get a few glimpses of John Shearer's mammoth drum kit. A kit that probably would have made Keith Moon envious.
It's so sad that most people consider Steve Miller a bigger influence in guitar playing than Steve Hackett. You could actually hear a gutiar in Hackett's compositions; Miller was all flashy effects, no real guitar playing.
Who considers Steve Miller a bigger influence than Steve Hackett? I've never heared that in my life. You're mixing in the wrong circles my friend. Either that or you're American, in which case you're mixing in the wrong country.
I am American, but I'm not stupid. I was commenting on readers polls from past years in many music magazines. Also, I'm trying to school my fellow Yanks on the magic and music of Mr. Hackett, so chill, sir. Not all of us Americans are ignorant or narrow-minded.

I read somewhere that Steve had a big case of stagefright (both when in Genesis and in solo-work). I don't know if he still has it but yes, he seems a bit 'desperate' in playing a solo, that really isn't that hard - but still very very beautiful. I'm a big fan of his 5 first albums. Actually 'Voyage Of The Acolyte' was named the best Genesis-record when it came out hehe..
