Ha it's interesting to see. Some things are the same and some things are so different. The Butcher Blue Boats are there working the harbour. No Gunwharf, no Spinnaker Tower but HMS Vernon instead. I just about remember this from when I was about 6 years old. No HMS Warrior and instead of Type 45 and 42's and Type 23's there are older Naval Ships. Great Stuff!!!
Always enjoy seeing views of Portsmouth (served on HMS Blake helicopter cruiser 1976 only 17 then) and still would like to move back there.Think Portsmouths improvements (still room for improvement) good to see
I was at HMS Vernon in 1970 and again in 1972. I returned to Portsmouth in 2004 for a visit and no more Vernon except for the main gate was sorta gobsmacked thinking of the times I had walked throught the main gate showing my ID card to the watchkeeper peering out of the hatch in the gatehouse, and on a Friday afternoon tearing out the gate to get the train to Waterloo on weekend leave.
Thank you for that fantastic video. I live by the harbour and just can't remember HMS Vernon. The site is now Gunwharf Quay shopping and leisure complex and the only thing remaining of Vernon is the Customs House building which has been turned into a bar. Lovely nostalgia though!
Another building remaining from HMS Vernon is No 21 Building (Vulvan I think) I started my career in art in that building Nov 5th 1956 working as a technical illustrator. Many happy memories! Anyone else remember those times in that building?
I was based at HMS Vernon while you were filming this in 83. We used to refer to the tiurist boats that went past as fanny boats. A whole lifetime away, now live in Australia.
Oh yeah, sorry your right!! Woops, i should have known better really, you can tell by the fact that they look totally different!!! I'd best order a copy of janes fighting ships i think??!!
The AKE 965 radar was live on HMS Antrim since those 'ticks' you can hear towards the end of the video shows that all were being irradiated.

Great video, strange seeing Pompey without landmarks like the Spinnaker tower and HMS Warrior which came to Portsmouth in the 1987.

where`s the warrior?
symes1878 4 years ago
Given this is 1983, the Warrior is still in Hartlepool (the town that restored her).
