@TheRalph1966 It was an amazing show with the vari-lites, but that was Dec. 11, 1981. Genesis never played the Carrier Dome before the Abacab tour since the Dome didn't open until September 20, 1980 - well after Genesis played their final gig in Upstate NY - and the entire 1980 Duke tour - @ SPAC on June 30, 1980.
Agreed takes me back to 5th grade listening to this for the first time at a friends house and then rushing to Sam goody to buy the LP myself wow that was 30 years ago already...seems like yesterday yes at :50 when Banks starts on the keys brings me right back to then....
My former roommate and I spent MANY late nights in Iraq listening to music and trying to figure out what the hell Abacab is. I've heard all the possible origins of the title but it's still a mystery to me.
I was the director for the live screens you see in this show, and my camera ops are doing the core of the show close-ups with supplemental cams for the wide stuff. I am not aware of who directed the laser disc show, but I suspect Jim Yukich, who did a lot of their videos at that time. FULL body chill starting around 4 mins. Amazing. That...is some of the greatest rock and roll...ever. Right up there with Led, Cream, whoever. Phil and the lads can be proud of what they did. One of the tightest acts, ever. Right down to the nanosecond. Thanks Phil. :D
@fluffythecat2 agreed from 4:03 on fking amazing with Phil on the other drumset...Banks going to town on the keys and Mike Rutherford on the six string.
I don't know why but I find myself on a Genesis kick lately...oh yeah tunes like this is why. And people listen to Lady Gaga today? Why or why?
I love songs where both Phil and Chester have a chance to play together. They have excellent chemistry and play off each other so well. Awesome ending. Love the part where they shift into the ending section right around 7:25.
Tony banks! you never really hear anything from Him, WAY TO UNDERRATED ( my opinion) He is a killer keyboardist, I think one of the best! He is always cool & quiet, Every now & then you may see a beer next to his keyboard, A rock n roll bad ass?lol. I don't know, But a BAD ASS ON THE KEY'S for sure !
Interesting that Rutherford is playing a Roland G-202 guitar here, as most of the other live clips I've seen from this era, he's usually playing a Steinberger guitar. I wonder why he used this guitar on this one song on this tour.
ol ... at the ens of this song nobody understtod what happened ... i think only i did here at home ... they are all shocked ..... is incredible what those guys have done playing this song ... more i listen it and more i reamin wo words

Sorry to see Phil steppin' out from behind the kit and steppin' down. Retiring, I hear. Will be missed. But I'm sure we will hear from him in some capacity or other. Production, etcetera...
I was fortunate enough to see Genesis in Denver, Colorado for their Turn It On Again tour and I can tell you that seeing this band perform is one HELL of an experience. As competent as he maybe, he just can't play to that level. At least Darryl can play the old songs. And the Miami Vice wardrobe...
Phil is singing into a Beyerdynamic M88 mic. If I can afford a lot of them, I'd get them for my church's band, since they're good vocalists. Ah, the Emulator II and Prophet 7 synthesizers. Know 'em quite well.
@tuokreahp Don't bother with the M88s. They are not much better than an SM58, really. Now, you can get a SM58 beta or the SM57 beta -- excellent and affordable mics. And if they're available, the Audio Technica Artist Elite series have very good and affordable product.
@bearmare Really? The M88's not that special? Hmmm. Yeah, my band's currently using SM58s on vocals, no 57s yet. I may look into the Beta 58s, though. Not much of a fan for A-Ts; you pay lots of $ for better sound from 'em. I picked the M88 for its better low end and higher SPL. Although, my next step is to replace the mixer. Rule of thumb: don't buy Peavy mixers if you want to sound great. Health & Allen or Mackie is far better, imho.
@tuokreahp I found the M88 sound good, but not for what you're paying for them. The Shure Betas have excellent sound: they can really cut through the mix and they are ruggedly made. I like the Opus line of mics from Beyer, however. I'd take Heath and Allen over Mackie just because they are better made. Awesome! Thanks PhilGenesisDB! The Sound is A1!
When Phil & Chester get on the drums at times it's thunderous!
And Mike Rutherford’s superb guitar work? He switched Darryl onto bass!
Mike: a much admired Genesis member & very underrated, maybe as he mostly plays bass -but then reminds us -like here, how good he can be!
