I'd fault the management at GM for overpaying themselves while failing miserably at the thing they were supposed to be GOOD at-- dealing with the UAW.

The more benefits and the higher salaries the UAW got in each contract, the more the management should have been penalized for not doing its job of controlling costs. By now, the CEO would be PAYING GM to work there.

There is NO line job in a car factory worth $150k. PERIOD. Some doctors don't even make that.

I have no paper docs or links for that number, but I've heard it many times, especially when I lived in cleveland and interacted with many line guys in the Ohio and Toronto factories. And that was a long time ago.  If our US car companies AVERAGE labor cost is $75 per hour, there are certainly ppl making over $100k tightening bolts. It's seniority and union rules. $80 per hr is easily $150k.. and the other companies avg per hr was just over $40. UAW owns all blame.

I think the market should set their salaries.  Companies make offer, people either take the jobs or don't, and it adjusts itself. Instead, the UAW negotiates and threatens strikes if the company doesn't kowtow.. and the rest is history.

foreign companies in AMERICAN factories using AMERICAN workers, avg labr per hr $40+.

I worked this out for my teenage niece once, when she wanted a new car. Until your repair bills go higher than about $4k per year, you're saving money driving the old car. And if you average the bills per year, they almost NEVER average anywhere near that high.

With this economy, and especially since the president is working so hard to limit our choices on behalf of the labor unions, I'm going to keep the car I have until it belches it's final cloud of smoke. :-)

it takes ten years or so, and many millions of dollars, just to bring a new drug to market. Government is the bottleneck.. as it should be, perhaps, because it is responsible for 'the general welfare', but the result is that only GIANT companies can AFFORD to create new drugs.  Smaller guys with great ideas simply can't afford the process of bringing them to market. less regulation = more life-saving drugs in this case, probably a few more bad ones too.. a trade off.
