I agree with other posts about the music. A steam locomotive makes it own music. Don't add any. That said, still fun to watch. I am always amazed that a steam locomotive doesn't tear itself apart given the mechanical forces that are in play.

#844 and #3985 are the last of a dieing breed I am glad Steam Shop takes care of these iron horses we don't see steam on the class ones anymore and UP is the only one to have them.

Nebraska and Wyoming are the best places to see UP's Steam. Every year at least once 844 rolls through along with 3985 pulling the circus train. Its one hell of a sight. When 844 rolls through it runs a good 80+ MPH. I tried to chase her to get good footage but couldnt catch up to her short of loosing my licence!
@Takutokira445 Well you've got it right that UP is maintaining the 3985 (challenger)...but NO Big Boys....they Do
maintain & run an FE -3 (the 844 which is a 4-8-4) which is also the Only Steam locomotive in the US that has Never been retired from the Active list of operational locomotives since it was new. There are NO big Boys in
operational condition..Anywhere (unfortunately)...and there Never will be, ever again.
@Takutokira445 Hi, thanks for your reply. Yes, I agree..as millions of others from around the world would also...however to restore, maintain and run a 4-8-8-4 (like a Big Boy) would be totally out of the question in this day & age unfortunately for Numerous reasons, ie: there isn't heavy enough rail on UP's system (or Anywhere else) to handle the weight of a Big Boy..also, there is no place to turn one, except 1 wye @ Green River, operating & support costs are too prohibitive, etc, etc.
Who'd figure that 3985 would be powerful enough to tow, along with a monster unit train, one of the UP's General Motors BB45's while the latter's crew fixed the down Detroit 24V93! Fab show. BTW, is the UP still maintaining any of these last steamers in running condition? Steam helped build the UP, after all.
@UnionPacific4012 What do you mean you don't think they are maintaining any steamers? what are the 844 and 3985 then? lol unless I'm miss-understanding what your talking about?
@UnionPacific4012 They are still maintaining the 844 and the 3985. They run both locomotives on several excursions through the summer especially. They are maintained and headquartered in Cheyenne, WY.
@UnionPacific4012 Union Pacific maintains both UP 844 and UP 3985. In fact 844 is the only steam locomotive in the United States to have never been retired . It stilled resides on the active roster list and could be called to freight service if ever needed.
@UnionPacific4012 Up maintains a 4-84 f-E-f #844 and 4-6-6-4 #3985 at their Cheyenne WY shops in the same facility used to maintain the 4000's. Currently #3985 is down for class 5 repairs.
@bcschmerker The UP does officially maintain both 844 and 3985. They actually own 4 steamers. only 2 are in operation. The steam locomotive made the UP through most of its existance (1860's-1950's). The UP Steam program is a division of the UP corp. Its common knowledge in the UPs home state.
@skybluedragonator UP FEF 838 is a parts locomotive for 844 and TTT63 #5511 a 2-10-2. They are stored in the Cheyenne Roundhouse with 3985 and 844. #5511 was the locomotive on Last of the Giants next to Big Boy considered the largest non articulated locomotive produced and many think it was saved by the torch because it was in that movie
@skybluedragonator it wouldnt be practical because the 2-10-2s were built with small drivewheels. They can run only about 45 mph but they will haul a train as long as challanger. They were built as drag locomotives (assist locos). They also have 3 cylinders unlike most rigid frame locos usualy have 2. Also the drive rods were cut on the move to the roundhouse. Some think it happened on the way to the scrap yard but she was saved thank God. Last remaining loco of her kind!
@bcschmerker Yes UP has their own steam department, the UP Steam Team is what maintains the steam locomotives still running in the United States and there are excursions at least once a year.
UP 844 runs a train from Denver to Cheyenne and return every year for the rodeo, UP 3985 is on the rail as much as it can be, and one of the 4000's is still in operation I think but none are run in normal service, only passenger excursion trains.
@Amtrak1194 NO..there are NO UP 4000's (Big Boys) in service ANYWHERE, and there never will be, again...sadly. Both, the 3985 and the 844 run pretty well all over, as needed...and the 3985 is even (occasionally) used in revenue freight service between Cheyenne & Omaha, and Cheyenne & Green River. As long as the UP Steam Dept can stay profitable (or, at least break even) Steve says UP will keep it going.
@TurbinePower69 Correction: DD40's---memory failed me concerning mention of the 40/45-series in a book that I once had. :-S Until the 1990's, Electro-Motive used huge two-stroke Detroits across the locomotive production line; I got an earlier message about 191CID-per-cylinder engines for railroad use, incl. the 12V191-T, 16V191-T and 24V191-T. Not even the 191's were immune to failure, though.
@bcschmerker Good to hear from you,Thanks. Unfortunately though, someone who really has not a clue...is feeding you some very bad "intel" on prime movers. 1) Detroit Diesel was a wholly separate corp. and NEVER had anything to do with EMD Whatsoever. 2) Although DD & EMD both "series'd" their engine families by the CID per cyl. preceeded by the no. of cyl's...design wise, they were & are, NOTHING alike, aside from being of 2 cycle design. 3) There is & never was a 191series DD. Will contin
@bcschmerker Page 2 from below reply. 3) No..there is & never was any such engine from DD with 191ci per cyl. DD's series in chronological order of development, are: 71, 51, 110, 53, 149 & 92. The 8v53, 8v71 & 8v92 are the only 2 cycle DD's still in production, but ONLY on special order for the military. DD's Biggest being the 149 series, was No Where near big enough for mainline Locomotive power. 4) EMD's were / are: 567, 645 & 710 CID per. cyl. A LOT of Torque is what counts, Not JUST HP.
@TurbinePower69 I'll have to take your word on the 149CID-per-cylinder models; another YouTuber must've mentioned a larger size bracket in error. I figure both 110's and 149's to be correct for different EMD series due to known power and torque requirements for railroad locomotives such as the SW, GP, and SD models; 53's, 71's and 92's were once common in heavy trucks.
@bcschmerker Hmmm..I think you forgot to read "page2" of my last reply, my friend..well again, firstly as I said in the begining..DD NEVER has had, not will Ever have..Anything to do with EMD (now owned by Progessive Rail Division of Caterpillar). In "page 2" at the bottom I said that DD's largest series..the 149's..are NO WHERE NEAR BIG ENOUGH for mainline Locomotive Power. EMD has their OWN PRIME MOVERS..and I listed them for you in order of development...567, 645 & the current 710.
@TurbinePower69 Obviously not the 8V92-T used in Class 8 trucks; the 16V149-T could generate 3000hp@1500RPM, so would be the right scale for specific locomotives. The 567, 645 and 710 must have come along after General Motors sold Electro-Motive to Caterpillar.
@bcschmerker the 567 engine of EMC came out in 1938! EMD dates from 1941 (I think) and the 645 engine from 1966; 710 from1984. GM sold EMD to Bekshire Partners et al in 2005; they are now owned by the people who own Caterpillar. As for putting a 16v149 in a locomotive, well maybe an amusement park train!!
The Challengers and Big Boys. 2 of the best models of art to ever come out of the US. Something about them, How they smell, Sound, Feel. The smoke coming out of the stack running in the high 40 mph range. If anything was truly magical it was/still is the Giant steams of the past. Im a truck driver and every once in a while I still see one in WY, ND, SD. Saw one in Chicago at the rail head once. Just idling in the yard getting ready to head West. It is sad that most of them are rusting.
@UnionPacific4012 Just so your aware of it, The Challengers were Not the " pre-production " of Anything...the 3000 class were, just what they were..4-6-6-4's. The " Big-Boy's" were not even a thought on the UP mechanical departments drawing board nor on any the UP management's mind at the time the Challengers were designed and built.

@musico81986 The 4-8-8-4 "Big Boy" was designed to pull heavy freight up the steep grades of many of the mountain ranges found in the western United States. After reaching level ground, the freight trains were handed over to the Big Boy's little brother, the 4-6-6-4 Challengers, which took the freight trains the rest of the way. Visit the UP's webpage, for a little history both the locomotives.
@HaloCE14 yup people don't even care that those great old engines helped build this mighty nation we call home and they are treating them like shit! i would give anything to see one thunder down the tracks with a load of freight again.
What many don't realize is that the time of giants might be upon us again. If they would be made to run on "junk" or byproduct/ waste elements of modern refining, they could use a fuel that is otherwise unuseable and seen as a liability.
@UnionPacific4012 - She's been repainted - and looks great! Scheduled to undergo asbestos removal in the near future - required (dumb) because she's not going anywhere! (federal program)

EMD has their OWN PRIME MOVERS..and I listed them for you in order of development...567, 645 & the current 710.
TurbinePower69 8 months ago
@TurbinePower69 Obviously not the 8V92-T used in Class 8 trucks; the 16V149-T could generate 3000hp@1500RPM, so would be the right scale for specific locomotives. The 567, 645 and 710 must have come along after General Motors sold Electro-Motive to Caterpillar.
bcschmerker 8 months ago

@worlock1422 BigBoys were capable of 80mph but were instead used to drag freight over steep grades at low speeds.

@worlock1422 You saw Steam in ND ?!!? When and WERE ?....

Is that the baby-Big Boy, the 3985?
musico81986 1 year ago
@musico81986 Yes! It was the pre-production of Big Boy. Its name was "Challanger".
UnionPacific4012 1 year ago

LOVE IT! I'm british, and even i will admit the sheer scale of american steam locos gives them a special something.

844 coming out of that tunnel with her steam puffing looks just gorgeous.

@HaloCE14 yup people don't even care that those great old engines helped build this mighty nation we call home and they are treating them like shit! i would give anything to see one thunder down the tracks with a load of freight again.

Nix the stupid music.
Trying to be "artsey"?
Would rather hear the real sounds when available.
robertgift 2 years ago
Ok thank you...I won`t forget that for the nest Video...
UnionPacific4012 2 years ago
@robertgift I agree there should have been sound of the locos but the song was brilliant for this.

That's the King of the giant locomotives..
DrWeed1975 2 years ago
What many don't realize is that the time of giants might be upon us again. If they would be made to run on "junk" or byproduct/ waste elements of modern refining, they could use a fuel that is otherwise unuseable and seen as a liability.
gattosub 2 years ago
Awesome, a pity we have to let them go.
bekkinkannu 2 years ago
DUDE, you forgot 4449, 3751, 2472, 1225 and all the others.
844 & 3985 aren't the only last giants out there.

this is so sad. I don't want to see all the big steam locos to go. WE NEED YOU STEAM LOCOS
