Your very brave about this. I had a hoarding Mom too? I promised myself I would never turn out like her.(My Mom) I hope your Mom gets better. May be she can collect for goodwill or a thrift store in her area. Or even a church. For the needy. Good luck ok.
you are a good son to help your mom -- hopefully she will recognize her problem. I help people who hoard. they need to recognize their hoarding comes from some unresolved painful past (as in your mom's it's a connection with her dad, who did collecting) she didn't get it that everything has it's place. you can't just set it down and leave it there.
If a thing is bought (like mom got the table with the missing leg) she can either sell it today or give it away. Glad she's working on it:)
This happend in my family. My mother who lived 200 miles away from us. I quit my job to help her organize her affairs. (alzheimers) She had 35 yrs. of Hoard! It took 8 mos. to sort, dispose, clean and paint and 3 yrd. sales with NO help from family the other 4 siblings except on MOVING DAY! They divided what was left and hauled ass out of there! I have NO relationship with them at all. It's true, "No good deed goes unpunished". It was like opening a can of maggots!!! I would NOT do it again.
you act like an obnoxious judgmental brat, and all throughout his vid all you do is piss on your own foot
you have your own attachments to your own things and you are able to USE THINGS which your mother trash pics, (calling yourself and "enabler") but its "other peoples trash" bla bla bla
heres the thing she goes overboard but saves things for a few purposes:
recycling, helping others (incl. her own family)
& plain & simple economics
sheesh, why not have a garage sale & let her make$
Thanks Eddie for posting your videos on this subject. I understand your point of view entirely...Is good for a celebrity to promote this subject...and is also therapeutic for oneself also to talk so openly about this subject. It is usually rather taboo and shameful to discuss it ...or certainly that is how i have felt for some time...particularly with certain relatives etc. But others are ok to share this with. Fellow people who live with hoarders totally understand where you are coming from.
Hoarding IS a mental disorder. My mum is one. And i have reacted as this son has done...for a very long time. I understand completely his point of view and the frustration and anger for those who live with hoarders or are related to hoarders. But i have started to try and understand more about this subject.....but it is seriously difficult for non-hoarders like ourselves to truly understand it. It is a seriously SAD condition and causes huge loss of love in families.
I think Scott's Mother's sense of identity is tied up in what she does. It makes her 'useful' - the re-distributing. And she said her father had a resale store and she used to go and get stuff for him. She probably received praise for her ability to find great things.
Maybe a better approach would to be praise her for her abilities (impressive) rather than to diss her and then help her see to keep it in balance. Set some limits on a room or two she can have for her redistributing purposes
@laudiumWP Hey there. Yeah, more than anything else (even sex and money) human beings want praise and validation and will keep returning to the moment that they got it, even if it's now inappropriate. Control is the biggest addiction of all and at the root of all addictions. So in some ways, she is attempting to exercise control, but like all addictions what worked once gets out of control and becomes destructive.
This is a mental disorder and there is a scale which establishes the degree a person hoards. It is called the NSGCD Clutter Hoarding Scale. It is the Official Organizational Assessment Tool. You can internet search this and also find it in pdf format.
The body language here is incredible - he's extremely uncomfortable confronting this and is still trying to enable by saying "she's made some progress", etc. He admits at one time there home growing up was "immaculate" because his dad was "the house guy". But as soon as you let these people take over and are afraid to confront them, it takes over, they bully, and get their way.
How would your life be if you donated ALL of your t-shirts and hats? Just free yourself and see how it feels.......it could be a fun experiment! Sell and donate it all and see what happens! now checkout Rade Zone on youtube!
I love you man, God bless you, best of luck
