gneisenau and scharnhorst were normal battleships armed with relatively small guns.
the admiral graf spee was a heavy cruiser of the "deutschland-class". the deutschland class were heavily armed and thats why they gave them the nickname "pocket battleship"
Great documentary, with one exception. They made a lot of the diplomacy and false intel that played a part in the Langsdorff's hesitation in getting underway earlier. Even though we know that the desalination unit was destroyed, which was essential for providing fresh water for the diesels, they make no mention of it. Without it the ship could only make way for a few hours. Lang'sdorff had little choice but to scuttle. Perhaps this information came to light shortly after this documentary.
After the war HMNZS Achilles was sold to the Indian navy where in the late 1950's she was involved in a collishion with another ship. My father who was serving with the NZ navy at the time was on attachment to the Indian navy was there at the time and saw it all happen he took a nice set of photos of the damaged Achilles which I now have.
@alpha18412 yes, much like the USS Constitution.....54 gun frigate, 3000 tons, cross braced...
less guns than liners but still big guns, HMS Victory was 3100 tons so more than equal frame, Cross braced kept her from bending in the middle, her hogging was never more than 4 inches... Generally Royal Navy ships hogged 3 to 4 ft....this made the Constitution as manuverable and faster than any but the lightest Frigates... but I think She could hammer larger Razee Liners (70+ guns)..
Timewatch is the daddy of documentaries. BBC is now a misandrist and Islam-boosting propaganda organ - but the Natural History Unit and other documentary folk are exemplary. Thanks for the post.
I thought the only pocket battleships were scharnhorst and gnaesegnau of something I don't know how to spell it

@anzacproud One of her turrets and gun director is now preserved in the original colour scheme and mounted at the entrance of HMNZS Philomel.

Can anybody tell me something about that music in the background? It is as much thrillful as the dokumentary itself.

Sir Harold Alexander, Robert E. Lee and Capt. Hans Langsdorff are all regarded by myself as the most honorable men I've read about.
