Not a bad bit of work for 1964! For all of those who doubt we made it to the moon, the SR-71 could almost make it into low earth orbit by this time. We had the technology by '69,scary,yes, but we did it. Luckily the XB-70 had a reasonably long life in collecting high speed aircraft data and ended up being a valuable tool before it was retired, it still is a magnificent machine.
I'm still awed by these airplanes. And I got to see a lot of first-flight footage before anybody else! My neighbor was a filmmaker who contracted w/ the Flight Test Center at Edwards AFB to film documentary footage, including some of what's in this video. Heady stuff for a fourteen-year-old airplane junkie!
@jrcadet4 Yes, i am too. Planes like this really died young so many young people today don't really care about these types of planes. I think This Plane is not only elegant by the way it looks, but it is elegant by the way it gets to mach 3. It makes the boeing 747 look like a big fat pig
It looks like the tu144 in a way..do you suppose we copied it? not beyond possibilities. Douglas I am told copied the Caravelle which was the first rear engined twin engine jet transport. :)
no, the xb-70 was an entirely new project, the soviets feared it so much that the tried to invent their own which is not su-100 sotka it achieved mach 1.4 and had problems with flutter so the soviets canceled it before a modification could be made
quite the aircraft! I think it was at Dayton or maybe at the air museum near Dulles...if at Dulles, I may have taken a foto of it for a soon to be done video.
It looks imposing from any angle. Ahead of its time really.

The problem with the Valkyrie was that they spent so much time trying to get it to go Mach 3, they forgot it had to carry bombs.

@FSXairpilot In all fairness you really can't compare the Valkyrie to a 747. They both serve different purposes.

i always thought that the su-4 sotka was copied from tu-144 only with a round nose and the engines closer
FSXairpilot 2 years ago
I suppose you could 'google' for some info on that

sorry the "not" before is "is" a typo so the xb-70 did achieve mach 3
FSXairpilot 3 years ago
hehe, I did not catch the typo but we all do that so nothing big. I hope I have a pic of it in the air museum near Dulles!
