It is a great skill to write confessionally as it were, and not sound mawkish; Hank Williams was an early example – possibly the earliest – of someone who could write in the first person and just move you. Dylan’s ‘Simple twist of fate’ is a masterful example....but Loudon is brilliant.
@peskirabbit: "Act of courage".....best description of Loudon I've ever heard. Fearless and naked. Amazing artist to let us share his life so completely. Special privilege. If only all of us could work out our demons in our own songs.....
The first time I heard this song was a show of his outside of philly... about a year after the passing of my mother... it emotionally floored me... and I am not afraid to say so...
I'm proud to say the first live concert I ever saw (1978) was Loudon Wainwright III. I like his songs just as much now as I did 30 years ago. Nobody writes songs like he does. Funny, poignant, topical, insightful, heartbreakingly honest...
Yes there is an honesty that can feel quite embarrassing at times, like someone being naked. It is one of his strengths that he can make that work.I admire people who can bring their private stuff out like this, its an act of courage.
Why would you say hes better than Rufus? There both great! Theres no need to say ones better than the other...Just love the music and be happy weve got them both! peace!
I think he/she can say Loudon is 'better', subjective as it is.
You state"Just love the music and be happy."
I watched Rufus in concert with Kate & Anna, and during his session I was decidedly unhappy, and happy when Kate & Anna sang. So isnt it down to how you feel?
he's the poet of everday life ..

The performance was taped for 'Austin City Limits' on
July 29th, 1998, and first aired in April of 1999.
The song appeared on Wainwright's 2001 album, 'Last Man on Earth'.

I like his voice more and more each time i hear it - there's some sort of honesty in it that I just can't quite figure out.
Also - i find him to be one of the most tastefull guitar players of his kind.
