A very good samurai film. If you're not into samurais, the sword play is magnificent! Definitely a good one to watch.
As far as story goes, I couldn't rate it that high, but it is one of those type of action movies, that you'll just be astonished by. Very worth watching.
To truly appreciate this movie you have to love the original Zatoichi *and* also know what Kitano is all about. It's incredible how many people spend their whole lives being kids living up to their idols
Don't worry kids nobody is going to hurt Daddy Katsu's image, ever, he will always shine on his own.
I like this one better then KILL BILL. Sorry Quentin but leave the sword play to the pros. I still like tarantino but Kitano knows how to do a samurai film!!
@Yojimbo, I don't care how many people thumb you or me down, I agree with you. Zatoichi in this movie was one-dimensional, not to mention the Ronin in the movie. In the origianl series, Hirate did not have to see Zatoichi's blade to figure out he was a swordsman, instead drawing his conclusion from his shoulder muscles. He and Zatoichi became friends, and Zatoichi wept when he was forced to kill Hirate, not to mention begging with him not to fight.
@Briselance Hirate was actually a character in the original Zatoichi series, a samurai hired by a rival gang. He and Zatoichi become friends, and although Ichi tries to convince HIrate he is only a masseur, Hirate isn't fooled. Hirate however is dying of tuberculosis, and as he would retain his honor by being killed by another samurai instead of thugs, challenges Zatoichi to a duel. Zatoichi breaks down and weeps after the duel.
This movie has not aged well, even though it's only a few years old. I never thought a film featuring such an interesting character could be so dull and shallow.
if you like this film, i recommend to watch the very original film from 1960s to 1980s there r 26 series and also TV drama series. older ones r black and white. Shintaro Katsu was the original Ichi and he's cooler than Kitano! you wouldn't regret watching them...i think this actor's son accidentaly killed someone with Katana in studio or something thought the Katana was fake! new Zatoichi film called Ichi is created by someone this year with Ichi as a woman, but its a disaster.
if i can send you japanese sources to you, it would be far easier...! do you have japanese language in your PC? chinese character for Ichi isn't the one for number one, its for market or city. the pronounciation is same. another mistranslation, i'm afraid.
You can call me a freak! But I don't mind! This is certainly one of the best movies and one of my fav's! I have this movie in my collection and believe it or not I watch this at least once every week and never got bored. Every time I watch it I find some new dimension of the film. just an epic in every sense. May be 10-15 years later it rate close to those of Kurosawa's classics. Three Cheers for Kitano.
i just checked wiki, zatoichi-zato is a rank amongst 4 the government issued for blind ppl in old time japan. many of those worked as biwa-houshi(travelling singer/story teller with instrument called biwa) were blind men, and also massager, some entertainers in a play group, and there are assigned ranks for how achieved they were. ichi is a name, so zatoichi means, blind man called ichi with a rank zato.
if u watch one of the orignal films they have the subtitles of translation but they also have a sort of mini glossary so that ppl hu dont know much bout japanese culture can understand better
i further checked the source and here there are...or i should be going to grab my lunch!
Zatou originally came from the organization formed by a blind prince who were the great player of Biwa guitar in japan to help blind ppl in 9th century and it was called Todoza. Biwa player/story teller were ranked by 4, also 73ranks in total. one of the 4was Zatou. then its generalized to call blind people.
Nope. Zato in the kanji used for his name means masseur. There are a few words for masseur in japanese, though, and you'll hear him called masseur with other words.
What's so funny about this movie is that there are NO sword fights whatsoever. Zatoichi kills everyone almost instantly. I think only two swords every connect in the entire movie.
That's how a normal swordfight would look like in those days anyways... A katana is not really made for blocking an attack in the same way as most european swords for example. (It's possible with great effect though with the proper technique:)
The sword fights in this are very realistic and they show that it only takes one hit to kill an enemy, he waits until the precise moment and then strikes.
An attempt is always good. Give them a break, at least they didn't have any cheap Matrix tricks (I don't mean that Matrix is cheap, but chinese use it too much)

Shintaro Katsu is the only "real" Zatoichi
The only thing good about this film was the dance scene. No one will ever be Ichi ,but Katsu. He also was a great singer and sang the theme song on his Zatoichi TV series.
I would figure it is just a good thing to keep you holding on to the end. When it was all over and he tripped on the stone, Saying humbly. "I'm a fuckup and sometimes I miss something because I am only human" It is only down grading his enemies to a lower point.
Great movie to watch for any Zatoichi fan. The only part I hated was the end where they're doing that modernized Riverdance-like bit. Totally ruined the ending to a awesome movie.
Well,i guess you dont really understand the humor of this movie or may i say humor of beat takeshi. The guy is a genius. The dance was a message from mr. takeshi if you can understand.
I was (and still am) a big fan of Katsu's role in the Zatoichi saga. But it's been 18yrs since his last film, it was time for a new production. Takeshi did a fairly good job paying homage to him by recreating his character as accurately as possible. If you know Takeshi, you know he's not trying to steal anyone's thunder.
The thing is that Katsu really put some emphasis in portraying Ichi's handicap realistically. For example, he would often bat his eyes as opposed to keeping them shut like Takeshi did. When eating, Ichi would often stuff his face and pour drinks in an odd manner. Finally, in Katsu's portrayal of sword fights, he would often wave his sword around as if he was fighting his handicap rather than the men directly (emphasizing the fact that because he was blind, he MUST go for the kill)
Katsu quite often taunted gangsters before engaging them. Of course, duplicating Katsu's performance is next to impossible, and I am fine with a 'cooler' Zatoichi. Takeshi, I feel, didn't pay too much attention to detail while pursuing his vision. First, the blood-draws in the movie were a little too over-the-top. If you were a swordmaster who can dispatch your enemies at such high speeds, blood shouldn't gush right when you swing.
Takeshi paid homage to Katsu's character by over-emphasising key points. (Just as Tarantino did to asian cinema in Kill Bill with the excessive blood, for example) I feel he would never do justice to the original, by just replicating him perfectly.
Takeshi knew he couldn't duplicate the amazing character portrayed by Katsu, so he made a slightly different character. It's not a "cooler" Zatoichi, just portrayed in a different light. And the over-the-top blood is sort of an artsy thing, meant to be unrealistic.
A very good samurai film. If you're not into samurais, the sword play is magnificent! Definitely a good one to watch.
