hi im patrick an IRISHman , nice tribute mate nice story shows how life is so short so tragic, reminds me of my cousins and uncle who fought in both great wars in the English and American Army god rest them and to 1 who died in ww1 a day b4 his 21st birthday god bless you all .
War. Contracted wastage of human life; all for the temporary satisfaction of gaining a piece of land, someone else's wealth or a feeling of superiority. All of which at the end of the day don't even matter.
think about it. if this was a soldier in Afghanistan shaking the hands of an insurgent, people would be calling him unpatriotic and a traitor on the cable news networks.
@TheTruthHurts129 Regardless of what the idiotic cable news networks would say (they should all just be ignored anyway), you wouldn't be traitorous or unpatriotic. The big difference between the enemy now and the enemy then is the German people (not leadership) were and are civilized with cultural similarities to the Allies.... terrorists are wackos that don't give a shit about anyone or anything other than their god. A terrorist wouldn't dare shake hands with an infidel anyway.
Like many have said, I fear for the day when this greatest generation is gone, taking with them their wisdom and hard-won knowledge of what war and suffering is really like.
Look closely and you'll see that his highest decorations is the Silver Star, which is a very high award, and had to be for something more than the story he tells here.
The song he played is "Lili Marleen", a beautiful song, and as meaningful to Germans as "Waltzing Matilda" is to Australians and "Maria Elena" is to Latin America.
Did anyone notice how clear his eyes are? To be honest I wouldn't give him 90 years, he looks a lot younger. This is really touching video, truly emotional.
Probably taken from a history piece done by KUED, Channel 7 in Salt Lake City. This is Col. Jack Tueller (ret.). Great story about Tueller in the Deseret News.
KUED will rebroadcast this segment of their World War II history on November 30, 2010.
@PyreFleur He was a lone sniper in a battle that was already lost. His duty was to do what he felt best at that time and obviously he didn't want to die for an already lost cause. Besides all that, what about the Bataan death march? Quite a few Americans soldiers waved the white flag and were treated like insects by the Japanese.
@Master7770 This was right after D-Day. The war was not yet a lost cause for Germany. The honorable thing to do would have been to continue fighting and take out as many enemy soldiers as possible with his sniper rifle. Every enemy soldier that he didn't kill was a threat to his countrymen behind him.
Of course, I'm an American, so I'm glad he was a coward. I wish all German soldiers were so cowardly during WWII. Would have made things a lot easier.
@PyreFleur Have you been to war, Pyre? You wouldn't understand a thing about what those men were thinking or feeling, but it's easy for you to rattle your saber from behind a computer screen, isn't it? Maybe when you gain a few more years in life you'll actually understand. As it stands, you're still too immature to grasp the meaning of a video like this.
I love this movie! Made me cry... such a touching story.

What song was it that he played? I got shivers, and I cried at the same time.
Grannyslittlegirl 8 months ago 2
@Grannyslittlegirl
The song he was playing is called Lili Marleen (1939 version),a favourite of all combatants in the ETO.
U can see how this song would evoke memories of home.
Hell I'd surrender if i had been that sniper.

They went with songs to the battle, they were young.
Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.
Ode of Remembrance.
