Just come across the above clip, thank you aptsarchive for reuniting me with my father. The cameraman is Frank Hudson in his early years with the BBC's Outside Broadcast Unit. He went on to be one of the top Senior OB Cameramen with LO21 and passed away 10 years ago, to see this clip was wonderful as, attempts to get a copy from the Beeb failed and now I believe they have sold the Outside Broadcast to SIS Live. Dad is turning in his grave!! Is there a way to obtain a copy?
@MarkHud1963 ... man, the dweebs at the beeb are criminal! They could do some amazing things with their archives. We've paid more than enough into it anyway. Could easily be the best telly service in the world. Bunch o tw@s
Does anyone remember the tune for the opening 11 am BBC TV from Alexandra Palace in 1952? It showed the television tower with radio signals swirling round the tower. I can remember the tune distinctly but wondered if anyone knew the name of it or has a recording they could, perhaps, upload.
fair brought a tear to my eye, the music was more than just grandstand it was saturday afternoons :) , and heralded my fathers return from his weeks work .
I can confirm that the date is correct - I've just frozen another version of this at the Third Division fixture list, and it fits exactly with that listed in The Times for 4th May 1963.
That day's Grandstand featured American boxing coverage (always billed in RT, daringly, as "a recording of the Gillette 'Fight of the Week'"), show jumping from Newark, swimming from Walsall and racing from Ascot - the first ever spring meeting at that course, moved from Hurst Park which had closed in 1962.
I have seen a clearer version of this, and slowed it down and frozen it,and then looked it up in my book, and found that Aston Villa were playing Nottingham Forest on that day-but the Villa lost 2-0!
Oh,and that day was due to have been FA Cup Final Day,but due to that freezing long winter,Man Utd met Leicester three weeks later,so this show was on during an extended League season.
@aptsarchive There is . . . you can just make out the football fixtures as the camera pans the studio . . . Leyton Orient were in League Division One for their one and only season in 1962-63, and Spurs were at home to Sheffield United . . . which definitely makes it May 4th 1963 as "scorpio" said above. Also bear in mind that the Football League fixtures were at least three weeks behind schedule from the big freeze, as the FA Cup Final was originally due to be held on this date.
proper music lets get back to that

The original 'Grandstand' was absolutely classic. None of the high tech of today, the programme was totally engaging.

The other giveaway is the Scottish FA Cup Final shown on the fixtures: Celtic v Rangers.

Many thanks for your comment. But how can you be so precise. There is nothing in the clip to be able to date is so specifically - or is there?
